EDITOR’SLETTER
‘Building cultural events in Toronto.’ This is the motto that graces the cover of this year’s program schedule. It is also the focus of the video that introduces L’Altra Italia’s 2012-2013 season: it pres-ents the rotating ‘bricks’ showing evocative stills from upcom-ing films. L’Altra Italia is a wellspring of projects and ideas. Our growth, measured in terms of membership, events, importance and resonance for our activities, has undoubtedly changed the shape and substance of the cultural association founded in 2002.The basic purpose of our group, which is to create a meeting place, a sort of ‘island’ of Italian culture for our members, will further expand into Toronto’s mainstream. The main objective is to create cultural, artistic and entertainment events tied to the Italian culture that will have a seismic impact in our ‘megacity.’ The promotion of cinema through the Italian Con-temporary Film Festival will continue to play a central role. We will, however, also aim at promoting other initiatives with more fervid dedication: music, poetry, theatre, graphics and visual arts, expositions, as well as welcoming world-renowned figures in the Italian cultural landscape in order to provide an eclectic and multi-faceted journey.Additionally, L’Altra Italia is widening its range of action: starting this year, the monthly film revue will be expanded to include screenings at Vaughan’s prestigious Colossus Theatre. In other words, our mission is becoming more ambitious and the courage needed to bring it to fruition is assured by the great enthusiasm we feel emanating from you, our partners and sponsors. Thank you!
Costruire eventi culturali a Toronto. Grazie!

Dear Members of L’Altra Italia,Once again it is my pleasure, on behalf of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura of Toronto, to thank you, the organizers and sponsors, for all the incredible initiatives that you promote with great enthusiasm and vitality.Eleven years of the best of Italian cinema, and this year an additional impressive milestone, the first edition of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival, the only festival of its kind in Canada. From June 26 to July 1 we were treated to an eclectic array of films that took us on a virtual journey of Italy, from past to present, with laughter or intense emo-tions, films that showed us life, Italian culture, delighting Italian-Canadians and Italian cinema lovers alike. Innovative films, talented casts, captivating scripts, brilliant directors, a potpourri that makes Italian cinema one of a kind. Thanks to L’Altra Italia we are lucky to take it all in on the big screen.A well-tested, solid experience that is ready to go that extra step, continuing its journey towards other Canadian realities. The Istituto Italiano di Cultura of Toronto will continue to assist you in this challenge. And with this auspice, I wish L’Altra Italia a new season full of successes.

Toronto, October 17, 2012
Dear Friends,It is with the greatest pleasure that I send my warmest regards to our friends of L’Altra Italia and to the many members participating in the rich cultural events included in this program.
I’m extremely satisfied by the high level of quality with which each objective was carried out and as well the great interest it raised amongst the Canadian audience.
The collaboration between the Italian Trade Commission and L’Altra Italia wants to promote the “Made in Italy”, and particu-larly our food and wines. Overall, the work was centered on strengthening relation-ships of knowledge among the Italian producer and the Canadian consumer. Particularly effective was the idea of embarking on a journey to discover Italian regional cuisine and the link between our wines and the regions they come from.
In this spirit of friendship I wish continued success upon all the activities of L’Altra Italia in the 2012-2013 season.

Following his eye-opening experience in the south, Alberto (Claudio Bisio) returns home to the north with the promotion to Milan he had always dreamed of. Meanwhile, his old friend Mattia (Alessandro Siani), from the laidback post office in Campania, is trying to prove to his wife (Valentina Lodovini) that he is taking work seriously and is committed to working harder to fulfil her dream of moving out of her mother-in-law’s home and into their own love-nest. But when his work colleagues misunderstand and submit his transfer request, he finds himself unexpectedly moving to Milan...

Having finally passed their high school exam (which they had to re-take twenty years late), seven former classmates organize a well deserved trip to the Greek island of Paros that they were unable to take in their teens. They are all facing personal issues: Giorgio and Lorenzo have to contend with their girlfriends’ infidelities; Francesca feels lonely and shows herself to be a kleptomaniac; Piero is married with a son, but is also tempted by another woman; Virgilio ends up falling in love with a woman he has never met.

MAGNIFICA PRESENZA
Twenty-eight-year old Pietro, a lonely soul who works night shifts in a bakery, has just moved to Rome into an inexpen-sive but beautiful apartment badly in need of repair. He soon starts noticing that objects have been moved and there are strange noises coming from empty rooms. It becomes clear that he is not living alone. His initial reaction is to ignore the seven and a half annoying ghostly residents, then tries everything he can to get rid of them.

Alessandro Gassman is Claudio, a cynical businessman and womaniser, Enrico Brignano is Danilo, a clumsy employee with a big heart. Two people like chalk and chesse, with the only desire to go back home (in the north) to spend Christmas with their respective families. After a series of coincidences the two find themselves sharing the same car and so their trip begins from Catania (Sicily) to Turin (Piedmont) and it will definitively be “A Christmas For Two”. For the first time together Gassman and Brignano give a performace of a lifetime and a brilliant comedy to not miss out on!

A surgeon, Mario, who has attained fame, wealth and success, suddenly decides to leave for Africa to assist his life-long friend Luca, bringing along his wife, Ginevra. Luca came to Africa years ago to set up a hospital, leaving behind everything. Three friends, three opposing visions of the world, three lives that have become terribly complicated. Love is not what it seems. What will happen when they all meet again? Who will have the courage to come out with the truth? “The perfect life” is the account of a friendship, two love stories, and at least four betrayals.

Rosetta is a lively, charming and confident 42 year old south-ern flower of the Thyrrenian coast. She’s happily living with her husband Edmondo, the best tailor in all of Calabria. They’re both proud of their atelier and of their beautiful daughter Sofia. With the sudden death of Edmondo, at the apex of artistic and economic success, Sofia and Rosetta are left alone by all their relatives and supposed friends; so they throw themselves in the only resource that life has left them: to keep the tailor shop working.

ROMANZO DIUNA STRAGE
Milan, December 12, 1969. A devastating bomb explodes at piazza Fontana at the Banca Nazionale dell’Agricoltura branch causing 17 deaths and 88 wounded. Police Commissioner Luigi Calabresi believes that the anarchists were behind this massacre as well as many other similar attacks. The investiga-tion leads to several suspects and arrests. One night a suspect commits suicide and the Commissioner is believed to be re-sponsible for the tragic incident. The case unfolds in several Italian cities and uncovers a universe of young neo-Nazi orga-nizations ready to carry out crazy plans involving international weapons trafficking.
Milano, 12 Dicembre 1969. Muoiono diciassette persone e altre ottantotto rimangono gravemente ferite.

L’INTERVALLONaples: A girl and a boy trapped in a huge abandoned building. Veronica has snubbed the Camorra boss in her neighbour-hood. Salvatore, has nothing to do with the Camorra, but they have forced him to play the guard. As the hours go by, Veronica gradually leaves her initial hostility towards Salvatore behind. The relationship between the two changes but are choked by fear as Veronica’s punishment could arrive at any minute and it’s sure to be terrible. At the end of the day, the camorristi who turn up are different from the ones they expected—they’re even more violent and ruthless.

PRESENTED BY
L’Altra Italia Culinary EventsThroughout the 2012-2013 season we will embark again on the discovery of Italian regional cultures through food and wine.
L’Altra Italia will host regular culinary events of specific regions where food and wine specialties will be introduced in conjunction with poetry, music, history and folklore.
We all know and praise “Italian Cuisine” which is though an abstract concept as “Mediterranean Cuisine” is. In fact, in Italy there are several regional culi-nary traditions that are influenced by a particular history, culture or environment and that differ from each other because of the many different ingredients and methods of cooking.
For this reason we decided to begin our journey to discover Italian regional cuisine. We will enjoy authentic regional dishes and come to understand and better appreciate the local areas where these great traditions originated.
We express particular gratitude to the Italian Trade Commission of Toronto, directed by Mr. Ascal Bova, We thank him for continuously supporting us and guiding us throughout this project.
The I.C.E. representative will be joined, from time to time, by various experts who will guide us through the culinary traditions of specific regions, helping us better recognize and value their secrets and particularities.

L’Altra Italia was founded in 2002 in Toronto.
It is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to highlighting the Italian arts and culture and establishing a two-way cultural interaction between Canada and Italy. Growing from the success of its cinema screenings, the asso-ciation is now an organization that presents year-round programs. Our initiatives have drawn an outpouring of support from the community, from the Italian institution-al organizations and local sponsors. Each year we have grown as a cultural entity and we have initiated more ambitious programs and events.
We want to emphasize that L’Altra Italia, although pre-dominantly made up of newly emigrated Italians, is open to all those that have an affinity with Italy and its culture.
While enjoying the Canadian lifestyle, our goal is to have the opportunity to find an Italian cultural retreat.
The association’s projects, like any other not-for-profit organization, are carried out thanks to the support of its members who have committed their time to volunteer. The Association sees its members as partners who seek new projects, resources and contacts as well as promot-ers of all its initiatives. In a multicultural and hospitable country such as Canada, where many diverse events oc-cur, L’Altra Italia intends to be a promoter, a catalyst and an amplifier of several events in different sectors: exhi-bitions, conferences, conventions, seminars, all related to cultural and artistic themes. L’Altra Italia is committed to supporting initiatives such as theatre shows, movie viewings, concerts and any other events or activities that might generate socializing.
We want to thank you for the support and enthusiasm that you will bring to this venture. A warm welcome to you all!

Being a member gives you the chance to attend all the cultural, culinary and social events including free admission at cocktail parties and screening of a season of Italian movies series.
The membership fee is $150.00 and it is valid for 12 months from the date of issue. Each membership includes 2 guest passes for L’Altra Italia events and entrance is free of charges for children under 18. The two guest passes CANNOT be used by a person that already attended one of our events in the past. The objective of the guest passes is to promote our associa-tion to people that do not know about us.
For the season 2012/2013 all members must choose only ONE location where they will attend screenings and receptions, either in Toronto or in Vaughan. This does not apply to all the other events organized by L’Altra Italia including “Cinema under the stars”.
At L’Altra Italia, we strongly believe that the language of cinema can provide the Italian loving community with an important key in understanding our contemporary society.Hence, we have worked together with institutions and language schools in order to come up with agreements that help facilitate the understanding of the Italian cul-ture.
Thanks to these agreements, students of Italian Cultural Institute will have free access to the movie screenings. In addition, students from Tutorino, York University and University of Toronto will be able to purchase a student membership card for only $ 35.00.
