ome September, as thefirst touches of greenstart to drain from the leaves aroundLake Winnipesaukee,the water smoothesout like freshly ironedsheets and the purr of classic wooden

boats replaces the muscled ski boats of sum-

mer. After two months filled with family and

friends, fundraisers and entertaining, Mike and

Irene Appe look from their stone patio across

the water to Gunstock Mountain and Mount

Major and take a little time for themselves.

All summer Mike has been mowing the

lawn and maintaining the boats and jet ski,

and Irene can’t tell you how many times she’s

stripped beds or scrambled eggs. But if they

hadn’t wanted to be a destination for their

loved ones, the Appes wouldn’t have built a

23,500-square-foot, lodge-like abode. With

eleven bathrooms and seven bedrooms, includ-

ing a third-floor bunkroom that sleeps ten, it’s

a house that was built with parents, siblings

and children in mind. “We wanted to build a

house where family could get together and not

stay in hotels,” says Mike.“We built this house for our love of family

and friends and our love of a good time,” adds

Irene. “We celebrate the Fourth of July, every

holiday, anything we can do to get people to-

gether. This is what it’s all about.”In 2001 Mike and Irene started thinking

about building. They had moved to New

Hampshire from Massachusetts a few years

earlier, when Mike retired from his position as

vice president of U.S. sales for Microsoft, and

Irene left her job as an office manager. They

knew local builder Jonathan Lovering through

friends and approached him about building a

house for them on a sixty-two-acre property

that Mike had spent three and a half years as-

sembling from eight different owners. Lovering

suggested Bill Soupcoff of TMS Architects in

Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Lovering and

Soupcoff, both swamped by the building boom,

told the Appes it would be a couple of years

before they could get to a project with them.

In no rush, Mike and Irene used the time to

hone their ideas of what would be their dream

The Building of a Dream

To build a house of this magnitude requires a blend of

substantial commercial construction yet it needs to meet

the demands of residential design and expectations. With

37 rooms and over 17,000 square feet, it was an engineering

feat. Oversized architectural details were incorporated to

bring the huge rooms to a human scale. For instance, the

30-foot stone fireplace, oversized crown moldings and

lighting, curved walls and counters, walls of windows,

an eyebrow window and large custom hanging lights

help to make the Great Room into a space ideal for formal

entertaining or intimate gatherings. Long hallways have a

continual flow of architectural elements, curves and angles

to lead the eye comfortably down to a seamless end.

The upper portion of the tower was built off site and

assembled complete with windows, curved moldings and

curved walls in place. It was an engineering challenge to

lift the tower to a base with curved staircase incorporated

and a zero tolerance for error.

The grand vestibule and curved stairway towering four

floors was another engineering marvel with portions built

on site and off site--having to be seamlessly attached.

The curved railings and moldings are seamless with each

piece of wood hand-chiseled to match the angle of the

curved walls and railings.

The commercial-grade kitchen meets the residential

expectations by installing ventilation in such a way that

you can’t hear the normally noisy commercial fans.

Windows had built-in valances to hide electronically

controlled shades and electronics.

The 15-seat theatre was acoustically enhanced with

surround sound, yet be sound proof from the Great Room

below. A hidden light-blocking shade is designed to cover

a large round window to provide the total theatre experi-

ence on a 10 foot screen from your soft leather seats. The

theater seats were lifted to the upper floor utilizing the top

of the main elevator.

A wood lift is designed into the Great Room fireplace

to transport wood from the lower level.

Stone masons were on site for 2.5 years. Each rock

handled 5 or 6 times before placed in its final place on the

foundation, fireplaces or stone walls. The curved stone

walls add structural integrity and organic appeal.

One electrician did all of the wiring with over 30,000

feet of 12/2 wiring, and miles and miles of total wiring.

Much planning went into the whole house integrated

central full house security, cameras, computer server,

video and audio systems. Every room has touch control

pads for every light. There is even a button that shuts off

every single light in the house as the writer of this article

found out while photographing the property.

This is a show house built by a family of dedicated crew

of the best in their trade with a commitment to design and

build the vision of a very particular family. Thus, creating

a place like no place anywhere.

Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in New Hampshire atover 44,000 acres and 200 feet deep surrounded by mountain vis-tas and the best that Mother Nature can provide. It encompassesthe towns of Alton, Gilford, Laconia, Meredith, Center Harbor,

Moultonborough, Tuftonboro andWolfeboro. Each town has itsown amenities and personality,all connected by the naturalsplendor of “The Big Lake”.

You will find some of the most valuable waterfronthomes in the State on the 180 miles of shoreline, thoughby comparison to properties in surrounding states, the value is clear. The lake is a boating, fishing, scubadiving and water enthusiasts paradise. From late Mayto October, the MS Mount Washington, dating back to 1872 andtoday carries over 60,000 passengers a season with dailyexcursions and dinner cruises.

In the winter you will find some of the most unique “BobHouses” dotting the icescape. Snowmobile trails criss cross thelake all the way to the Canadian border. You are in the heart ofthe best skiing in all of New England. Alton Bay has the the coun-try's only FAA designated iceport on the frozen ice on Alton Bay.

Winnipesaukee and the surrounding lakes make up what isknown as the Lakes Region. The area was the inspiration and

backdrop for the movie “On Golden Pond” screenplay written byNew Hampshire native Ernest Thompson staring Henry and JaneFonda and Katharine Hepburn. Other movies included “Whatabout Bob”with Bill Murray, ’Click” with Adam Sandler and ref-erenced to it in Three Stooges 1940 short "No Census, No Feeling", Lake Winnipesaukee History.It is an unusual glacial Lake that reversed flow from going towardthe ocean to the direction of the Merrimack River. Early explorerscame to Laconia in the 1600’shoping the rivers would lead toLake Champlain and the GreatLakes. Native Americans nameWinnipesaukee means either

"Smile of the Great Spirit" or "Beautiful Water in a HighPlace." At the outlet of the Winnipesaukee River, the Win-nipesaukee Indians, a subtribe of the Pennacook, livedand fished at a village called Acquadocton. Today, thesite is called The Weirs,Lake Winnipesaukee Firsts.

Wolfeboro History

Wolfeboro, settled in1768, was granted by

Governor John Wentworth andnamed for General Wolfe, a hero ofthe Battle of Quebec. Colonial Gov-ernor John Wentworth, his nephew,established Kingswood, an estate onLake Wentworth, making it the “Old-est Summer Resort in America”. Withthe end of the Civil War and thebuilding of the Wolfeboro Railroad in1872, tourism began to come to thischarming town. The historic Depotbuilding still remains. The track nowserves as an 11 mile walking and

bike path past Crescent Lakeand Lake Wentworth, endingin the town of Wakefield.
