Fall is here! We are busy learning about our 5 senses. We are using our science tools to explore apples and pumpkins. In Reading we are learning about main idea and details, character and setting. Please read with your child daily and have your child practice telling you the characters and setting and retell the story. In Math we are learning about comparing numbers. We are also practicing counting to 25. Our storybook parade is October 31! Please remember to choose a character, create a costume, and bring in the book. Be creative!
Happy Fall!
First Graders are working on “Re-telling” stories in order. This is an easy one to practice at home. Just have your child re-tell any story you read to them. Be sure to have them use the words first, next, then, last. We use these words when we are writing narratives as well.
In math, we are learning different strategies to solve addition problems. It is time to really practice those math fact. Students should be solving addition and subtraction problems to 10 in just a few seconds. Practice, practice, practice.
In Science, we will be describing and sorting objects by their properties. This can be loads of fun. Sink/float, heavy/light, hot/cold, etc.…
Do not forget that we will be having our “Storybook Parade”. Choose a book and character to dress up as. More information will come home soon.
Thank you for all your support.
Whooo is that learning all about their letters and letter sounds? Why it is preschool of course! We have been having a howling good time here in preschool learning all about our five senses and now we will be flying into some batty new knowledge and sticking a web of new facts in our brains. We are anxiously awaiting our upcoming Story Book Parade on the 31st and can't wait to see all the amazing costumes.

It is nice to see all the students back, safe and ready to learn, after the storm! We are starting to work on multiplication in math, so please have your students practice their multiplication facts. Also, each student should be working on their vocabulary "costume" for the parade at the end of the month. And of course, READ...READ.....READ!
This month second graders had the opportunity to present their Hispanic Cereal Box Projects. These amazing projects will be displayed near our front office so we welcome you to stop by and take a look at them. We were very proud of our students for their presentations. This month in Language Arts/Social Studies, second graders have discussed and learned about what it takes to be a responsible citizen as well as how one becomes a naturalized citizen. We have started Chapter 2 in Mathematics and continue to work in small groups for more individualized attention. A special thank you goes out to Ms. Nannet who presented on the needs and purpose of service dogs. Students really enjoyed watching the tricks performed by Sandy and learned a lot about different kinds of dogs. In Science, second graders will be working on a science experiment that involves using potatoes. Students will be observing, predicting, investigating, measuring, and inferring based on this experiment. Parents please continue to use I-‐Ready at home as this is a very useful method to learn reading and math skills while having fun. Students are still taking their diagnostic tests in reading. Our second graders continue to learn Chess in our classroom and are taking great notes so they are ready to challenge one another soon. Parents please remember that our Vocabulary parade will take place on Monday, October 31st and we would like all students to participate as this activity involves using vocabulary words to demonstrate school spirit. We are all looking forward to this event and encourage you to be as creative as possible. We would like to thank the parents that continue to volunteer their time to help us in the classroom and encourage more parents to participate.

October is here and our 4th graders are busy, busy, busy. In math, we’ve been working on solidifying our multiplication skills and solving multi-step math problems. We’ve also been busy working on our laptops using programs such as i-Ready for Math as well as Reading. Our students really love them and are using them very responsibly. The fourth grade teachers are using the laptops as part of their center activities during our ELA reading block as well. The students are using their laptops to do research in order to create posters and pamphlets that correlate to the subject areas we’re learning about such as New York and Ecology.
In reading, we’ve been working on main idea and details, as well as understanding characters in plays, prose, and folktales. Their i-Ready reading lessons help reinforce these skills as well.
We’d like to thank our families for keeping up with signing your child’s agenda daily. It helps keep them accountable for completing their homework on a regular basis and it serves as our main form of school/home communication.
Please keep those Harvest Drive donations coming in. We want to be able to help many families in need this holiday season.
Biztown is coming!!
5th Grade students and parents: Mark your calendars! On Thursday, December 1st, 2016, Lakeside Elementary’s 5th graders will be going on a free field trip to J. A. Biztown in Coconut Creek, FL. This on-site visit is one of the concluding activities to the J. A. curriculum taught by the 5th grade teachers. PARENT CHAPERONE/VOLUNTEERS are needed! Please sign and return the volunteer paperwork sent home with your child. Only approved volunteers may attend. We look forward to participating in this exciting educational opportunity with you. OCTOBER’S KID OF CHARACTER TRAIT -‐ RESPONSIBILITY Responsibility is the character trait or the month of October. This newsletter offers you activities and ideas, which will assist you with helping your child to understand the importance of responsibility.
Responsibility is essential for becoming a healthy, happy, and productive person, and it is the basis for a free and civil society where each person does what he or she is expected to do. This belongs at home where children learn to take care of their belongings, clean up after themselves, do chores with a good
attitude, finish their homework and resolve conflicts peacefully. Encourage your children to take responsibility in “little things”
so they are ready for greater opportunities in the future! Ideas to Do as a Family
• Have your child share with you about times they are responsible. Emphasize that being responsible requires knowing what is expected and not making excuses.
• Share with your child about something you did that required responsibility. Explain how you are responsible. • Schedule daily household chores that your child will be responsible for.
• “Catch” your child being responsible and offer your encouragement by verbally showing your appreciation.
• Watch a movie or TV program together and discuss how the characters are being responsible. • Volunteer as a family to do a community service project together.
• Remember that the best teaching tool is to always model the behavior you want your child to learn. Congratulations to all of our October Kids of Character for Responsibility. A SPECIAL congratulations to Tyrrell Morris from Mrs. Lopez’s 5th grade class for
being selected as our school-‐wide Kid of Character for Responsibility. He will be honored this month at the Pembroke Pines Police Department.
