Our first two attempts to have our PTA’s Move-A-Thon have been thwarted by rain. That has not dampened the spirits of our wonderful Move-A-Thon chair people, Keely Gregorio and Tammy Millington. Multipurpose Room

Watch for details in an upcoming Friday Folder!

Once again Foothill School, El Camino School, and Isla Vista Schools will be hosting Safety Town this summer! Soroptimist International of Santa Barbara is celebrating its 43rd year of sponsoring this signature project within the Santa Barbara area. All aspects of safety are taught to the children who will be entering kindergarten or first grade in August.

Sessions begin the week of June 12th and end the week of July 24th. Registration is available online for the Foothill School site at www.sbsafetytown.org. Hard copy applications are available in the school office or can be downloaded from the website.

If you should have a teen currently in Jr. High or High School who is interested in community service, they can apply to be a Counselor in Training (CIT) volunteer. This application may also be downloaded at sbsafetytown.org.

We hope that your child and/or teen can participate in this outstanding program.

Geography Bee

On January 24, the students in Grades 4-6 gathered in the Multipurpose Room to cheer on their classmates in the Mountain View Geography Bee hosted by Mr. Hugh Ranson and Mrs. Holly Bosse. Twelve finalists, two from each classroom, had earned their place in the Geography Bee by winning their individual classroom geography contests.

The finalists selected for this year’s Geography Bee were:

■ 4th Grade: Aleena Padilla, Madison Weber, Nathan Hadsall, and Scott Nightingale

■ 5th Grade: Katelyn Lisi, Georgia Wilson, Ana Dowbusz, and Tarek Elkurjie

■ 6th Grade: Kyle Spink, Isabelle Kim-Sherman, Nathan LaBau and Alexi Stapf

The students were asked questions that tested their knowledge on a wide variety of geography topics. After six rounds of questions, Isabelle Kim-Sherman was named the winner. Isabelle will now take a test to see if she will advance onto the California State Geography Bee.

Congratulations to Isabelle and to all of the finalists!

The MVSF launched its new Facebook page just in time to join in collaborating with the PTA on the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the school on April 22nd. You may visit the Foundation Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/MtViewSchoolFoundationSB.

Now we need your help reaching out to find Facebook friends with alumni, community members, former parents and teachers, neighbors and others who support and value Mountain View School. All are welcome and encouraged to attend the event. In addition to enjoying a delicious pancake breakfast, watching students ride hovercrafts they built and touring the STEM Lab (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), attendees will be able to see the contents of the old and new time capsules prepared by Mountain View students and view a memory board of classes and students dating back to 1966.

If you have photos or memorabilia from decades past, we would love to add them to the memory board. You may email photos to [email protected] or send them to Dale McCaskey at 5587 Camino Cerralvo, Santa Barbara, CA, 93111. (Please put your name and address on each item so we can return them to you after the event.)

For 50 years, Mountain View School has been the heart and soul of our community, upholding the highest standards of excellence in education while at the same time maintaining the integrity and desirability of living in our school district.

The Mountain View School Foundation is proud to be part of supporting the school to help sustain its tradition of excellence. We are very close to reaching our goal of raising $100,000 in just three years to provide grants to help create and equip the STEM lab.

In addition, the Foundation granted $25,000 for improvements to the Multipurpose Room, which included updating the stage lighting and the sound equipment.

LOOKING FOR FRIENDS

We would like to thank our new and continuing donors who support our mission and make these grants possible. Please view our website for our list of donors. (http://mvsfoundation.org/) If you happen to know any of them, please let them know you appreciate their continued support of Mountain View School. They are neighbors, friends, former students and their families, businesses and other grantors, who are committed to excellence in education and who recognize that an investment in our neighborhood school is an investment in the future of our children and our community. Please contact us if you have any suggestions of donors or grantors who would support the Foundation’s work.

The Foundation’s current board members are: Laura Ciontea, Judy Jennings, Kristen Kovacs, Dale McCaskey, Fritz Pinney, Sharon Rossol, Mike Schley, Ned Schoenwetter, Angel Sugleris and Bob Wood. The MVSF was founded in 2013 by Ned Schoenwetter and Nancy and Mike Schley. Eden Jasiorkowski serves as PTA liaison to the board.

years

Conjunctivitis You or your child/family member awakens in the morning with painful, swollen eyes and drainage that is crusted on the eyelashes or your eyes are red,

watery and itchy. You or your child/family member, are probably suffering from conjunctivitis or “pink eye” caused by a virus, bacteria, allergen (pet dander, pollen, dust mites) or irritant (smog, contact lenses, swimming pool chlorine).

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, a thin clear layer of tissue that covers the white area (sclera) of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid. There are many tiny blood vessels in the conjunctiva and when it becomes inflamed, these blood vessels increase in size causing the redness or “pinkeye” associated with conjunctivitis.

The symptoms of conjunctivitis are largely self-limiting and often clear up without any treatment. Certain types of conjunctivitis may require antibiotic or anti-allergy medication to resolve the inflammation and uncomfortable symptoms.

See a medical professional if you experience:

■ Moderate to severe pain in your eye(s).

■ Blurred vision or light sensitivity.

■ Very intense redness or extreme swelling of the area around the eye.

Conjunctivitis caused by allergens or irritants are not contagious and cannot be spread from one person to another. Bacterial and viral infections of the eye are contagious and may be spread from person to person by sharing washcloths, towels, bed linen, makeup products, tools or brushes.

Who was Johnny Appleseed?

One of Ohio's most colorful legends is that of Johnny Appleseed, the kind and eccentric farmer who started the apple industry in Indiana, Northern Ohio, and Western Pennsylvania, Johnny Appleseed was actually a

real man named John Chapman, who was born in 1774 in Leominster, Massachusetts. John was the son of Nathaniel Chapman, a farmer and Revolutionary soldier; his mother died during the war of tuberculosis. When he was a young man, John's father apprenticed him to a local orchard, where he learned all about apples. At the age of 18, John Chapman left Massachusetts for Western Pennsylvania.

Although the popular legend has Johnny Appleseed spreading apple seeds throughout the Ohio Valley as a random act of generosity, the truth is that John Chapman grew his apple trees for profit. In anticipation of the arrival of large communities of settlers to the western frontier, he would establish a stand of young apple trees and then sell these trees to settlers for six cents a tree. John would travel back and forth across the Ohio Valley, planting trees and tending to his orchards.

John Chapman is said to have dressed in clothes made of sacks and used a cooking pot as a hat, living off the land as he traveled. He was also one of the country's earliest vegetarians. He died suddenly of pneumonia on March 18, 1845, at the home of a friend. He is buried just outside of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The life and work of John Chapman are still celebrated throughout the Midwest with several cities hosting Johnny Appleseed festivals each fall.

Easy Apple Dessert

Pizza

Ingredients

1 premade thin pizza crust*

1 can apple pie filling

4 tablespoons butter,

softened to room

temperature

2/3 cup brown sugar

1/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/3 cup old-fashioned oats

1/2 tablespoon cinnamon

1 cup powdered sugar

1 to 2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350F degrees.

2. Take crust out of package and place on round baking sheet.

3. Open your can of pie filling. With a sharp knife, cut the apples by pulling the knife back and forth across the apples. This will chop them up and give you more apple filling across your whole pizza.

4. Spread the apple pie filling evenly on the pizza crust.

5. In a bowl, combine softened butter, brown sugar, flour, oats and cinnamon until crumbly. You can use a fork, a pastry cutter or your hands to do this.

6. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apple filling.

7. Bake for about 25-30 minutes, until heated through and crumb topping is slightly browned.

8. While the pizza is cooling, make the icing. Whisk together powdered sugar and milk. Add milk slowly until you get the consistency you like. Drizzle icing all across pizza.

9. Using a sharp pizza cutter, slice up your pizza and serve.

* NOTE: You can substitute refrigerated pizza dough for the crust. Unroll the pizza dough and press it into the round baking sheet. Bake it in a 350 degree oven for about 15 minutes, or until it’s a little bit golden. Continue with Step 3.
