Save the dateand take time to make invitations the start to a great weddingeddings have evolved so much in the past 20 years,

and there are literally endless options with whichtodays brides are faced. Invitations are no exception there are formal, casual, letterpress, engraved, eco-

friendly, the list goes on and on. From save-the-dates toinvitations to programs and thank-you notes, a reputable

stationer can guide you through an often overwhelming process. From her stationery design studio, graphic designer Tara Felder has

been assisting area brides for more than four years to develop creativestationery suites. Here are a few quick tips from Felder to get youstarted.

    1. Think about your wedding: Decide on what tone you want toset with your event. As a general rule, you want the pieces you mailto your guests let them know what to expect, i.e. black engraving onecru paper usually indicates a formal affair while a colorful at-printed

invitation might allude to an intimate beach-side event. But thatdoesnt mean that a white invitation with letterpressed gray or navyink is any less formal.

    2. Have a budget in mind: While its totally normal to not have anidea of how much invitations will cost until you start looking, youknow your overall budget and how you want to allot your resources.

    3. Educate yourself: Blogs and magazines are a wealth of informationand ideas to get you started, but a little goes a long way. Too muchresearching and looking at other peoples wedding blogs will drive youcrazy. Nothing beats sitting down and meeting with a knowledgeablestationer who can help you weigh your choices and will be able to helpguide you to the best options for your wedding.

    4. Dont sweat the etiquette: I approach etiquette rules as a set ofimportant guidelines set forth many years ago. But rules are oftenmade to be broken and reinterpreted. You have to do what makessense and works for you and your budget whether youre weighingusing double-envelopes or how to word your invite.

    5. Enjoy the journey: Dont forget this part. It should be

fun. I know it can be stressful, but it should be more funthan anything. Just remember that with any luck, it wont bethe best day youll ever have but just the rst of many bestdays for you and your spouse.

    ACHES AND PAINSMassage cupping

Through suction and negative pressure, massagecupping releases rigid soft tissue, drains excessuids and toxins, loosens adhesions and lifts connectivetissue and brings blood ow to stagnant skin andmuscles. At Bella Rileys in the Lexington Mill complex, owner Rachel Romanelli says that she and othermassage therapists at her salon and spa were trained andcertied in the technique two years ago.

Cupping lifts the muscles instead of pushing onthem, which gives blood a chance to ow underneath,

she says. This massage technique is being used effectivelyfor people with specic issues, such as sciatica andpiriformis syndrome (pain associated with the muscledeep in the buttocks thats responsible for hip rotation),as well as diabetes, migraines, sustained illnesses, andpre- and post-operative procedures plus a host ofother conditions.

Cupping can be performed on targeted spots, depending on what a client needs. Cupping is also usedall over to stimulate the skin, which increases circulationand reduces cellulite.

Bella Rileys offers 60- or 90-minute cupping sessions,as well as a specic face and neck lift.

    The Power Is InThe Partnership!

Stimulating.Rachel Romanelli of Bella Riley Salon and Spa inLexington offers a cupping massage for her customers. Cupping can beused all over the body to stimulate the skin, which increases circulationand reduces cellulite.

    Spa stats

Americans may have more reason to seek spa treatments thanever before. That is what the International Spa Association (ISPA)is counting on. Despite a struggling economy, the spa industry hassteadily climbed since 2007. From 2007 to 2008, revenues increasedby $2 billion, spa visits by 22 million, and locations by 3,400. In thepast few years, it has struggled only slightly. The emergence of couponprograms has helped bring awareness to consumers, who might nothave typically sought out spa treatments. ISPA has found that someconsumers are asking for shorter treatments and are often usingcoupons or seeking discounted packages or specials. Some spas, such as Bella Rileys in Lexington, will even take gift certicates fromspas that have gone out of business, at 50 percent of their value.

    FACEPumpkin enzyme mask

Especially popular during the cooler months is thepumpkin enzyme mask at M.D. Skin, based in WestColumbia and owned by Marci Delaney, a licensedaesthetician and former beauty pageant winner. Anytime

you can use plant enzymes on your skin, youre a stepahead, explains Delaney. Theyre easy to work with, and gracious and giving to the skin.

Also popular is the sugaring hair removal technique. The Simply Sugar Systems offers a sugar paste made upof sugar, lemon juice and water to remove unwanted hairfrom any part of the body.

    Microdermabrasion facial

For what she calls a frou-frou, feel-goodexperience, Donna Branham, owner of Doll Faceinside Borreggines Salon in Irmo, offers her clients

a microdermabrasion facial. During this hour-longexperience, she massages arms, shoulders, and hands.

Microdermabrasion involves removing dead skin cellsso that the skin produces more collagen. Skin is left

feeling smoother, plumper, more youthful, she says.

    Hyperpigmentation mask

    EYESLASIK surgery

LASIK eye surgery is one of the most commonsurgeries, with various sources reporting the numberdone in the past two decades as anywhere from 8 millionto 16 million. The impetus to have a surgeon cut into theeye with a laser is simple. LASIK corrects the refractionin the eyes natural lenses to reduce the need for glasses orcontacts.

The overwhelming drive is just to get away fromglasses or contact lenses, said Dr. Ed Mintz, whoperforms LASIK surgery at Columbia Eye Clinic.

People with active lifestyles dont like glasses slippingdown on the nose or sweat getting in their contacts. They feel theyre hampered by being tied to an

appliance, Mintz said.LASIK isnt the only solution (others include

photorefractive keratotomy and implantable contactlenses), but its the most popular. Its not suggested for

anyone younger than 18, and Mintz prefers patients waituntil their mid 20s because the natural lenses changeshape during younger years. And the reality is that the

vision correction required for most people changes

throughout the adult years, he said. Its difcult for someone to end up 100 percentwithout glasses, but the need for glasses can be reducedremarkably, Mintz said.

The procedure itself takes only about 10 minutes pereye, and the surgical visit typically takes several hours, including preparation and initial recovery. Many patientsspeak of the immediate improvement in vision, butthere is a healing process after surgery. The main pointis patients need to avoid rubbing their eyes for several

weeks. The standard cost for LASIK at Columbia Eye Clinic

is $1,500 per eye. Check with your insurance provider

because some insurance plans cover the procedure, whileothers consider it elective surgery.

    FACEPearl Fractional laser

Age shows on the face. Sun damage, scars and wrinklesare inevitable. But there are ways to diminish theimpact of time.

At Rejuvenations Medical Spa, one of the popular toolsfor ghting those blemishes is the Pearl Fractional laserprocedure, according to Amy Powers, one of the spasfounders. The procedure can soften the edges of wrinkles, make ne lines disappear and reduce the scaring of sundamage or acne.

Powers likens the Pearl Fractional procedure to

aerating a lawn, with the laser poking tiny holes in yourface. The skin, like aerated turf, grows back healthier thanbefore.

If it sounds slightly painful, it can be. An anestheticcream usually is used to numb the face, and many patientsopt to take a painkiller such as Valium before the surgery.

The procedure also can cause temporary facial swelling.Patients should be prepared to stay inside for two to threedays and consider about ve days of social downtime,Powers said.

But after a few days, those little holes poked in your

face have regrown, and you have a brighter, fresher look, she said. One procedure alone can make a signicantimprovement.

Cost ranges from $400 for the area around the eyes to$2,100 for the full face.

reast augmentation is to plastic surgery whatLASIK is to eye surgery. National plastic surgery

organizations estimate surgeons perform around 300,000breast augmentations annually.

At Capital Plastic Surgery in Columbia, Dr. GregSexton does a tremendous volume of the surgeries, saidofce manager Catherine Sexton. Over 20 years, wevebecome a well-oiled machine.

Most women who come to Capital Plastic Surgeryhave done their homework on the procedure and arecommitted to changing the shape of their breasts,Catherine Sexton said. They get down to the details with

In many cases, patients can drivethemselves home after the procedure,Hayes said. With blood owingcorrectly again, the pain disappears.

The blocked veins fade from sightover the next few weeks.

If the patients dont change thehabits that prompted the originalproblems jobs that require a lot of

standing are one major culprit theycould face recurrence of the problem. But just as the original varicose veinstook years to develop, new onesusually dont show up for years.

Hayes declined to reveal a pricefor VNUS closure operation at The

Vein Clinic, but she said it usually iscovered by health insurance.

a 3-D breast imaging machine thatallows the staff to show exactly howpatients will look with different sizesof implants. They also try on implant

sizers, which give an idea of how theywill look and how clothes will t.The procedure takes 30 minutes

to an hour, with either saline orsilicon implants. Its outpatientsurgery, usually done under generalanesthesia. Capital Plastic Surgerytries to schedule surgeries late ina week, with the goal of patientsreturning to their normal routineearly the next week.

The ballpark gure quoted thesurgery is $5,000 for silicone implants

or $4,200 for saline implants,Catherine Sexton said.

    LEGSVNUS Closure

While varicose veins can beunsightly, they also cancause pain. Theyre caused bymalfunctioning veins that dont allowthe blood to ow smoothly. Pooledblood causes the ugly lines and the

discomfort, which most often occursin legs but can show up elsewhere inthe body.

Less than a generation ago, varicose vein surgery called veinstripping was complicated, requireda hospital stay and often left scars.

Advances in technology in the pastdecade allowed doctors to performthe surgery under local anesthesia asan outpatient procedure.

After more than 25 years as ageneral surgeon, Dr. Neal Reynolds

recognized the burgeoning eld ofvein surgery and started The VeinClinic in Columbia, according toHeather Hayes, the clinics marketingdirector. One of the more popularprocedures he performs is VNUSClosure, which uses radio-frequencyenergy to seal damaged veins. Oncethe veins are closed, blood naturallyreroutes to other veins.

    STOMACHSleeve gastrectomy

    The gold standard of weight

loss surgery for years was thegastric bypass. These days, thesleeve gastrectomy is challengingfor the top spot among patients atRiverside Surgical Group.

The sleeve gastrectomy offersas good a weight loss at the gastric

bypass, but its not as involved andhas fewer potential problems, according to Dr. Jim Givens, abariatric surgeon and a partner inRiverside.

The gastric bypass closes off part

of the stomach and reroutes foodpast most of the small intestines. The smaller stomach means youfeel full after eating less food. Butthe bypass also routes food pastparts of the digestive system thattake in certain nutrients.

The sleeve gastrectomy also shrinksthe stomach, reducing it to the sizeof a banana by removing a portion. But the digestive tract stays intact, routing through the small intestines.Patients who combine the surgery

    with healthy eating and exercise

programs lose an average of 60percent to 70 percent of their excessweight over two years, Givens said.

Both procedures arent for folkshoping to lose a few pounds. Theyrefor patients with serious obesityproblems at least 100 pounds abovetheir ideal body weight, Givens said.

The sleeve gastrectomy isminimally invasive surgery, done

with a laparoscope inserted in a smallincision. Patients usually spend oneto two days in a hospital and are out

of work for a week to 10 days. Its major surgery with a majorprice tag, in the $17,000-$20,000range. It also can have major healthimplications combating diabetes, strokes and joint problems. Thats

why its covered by many insuranceplans. Medicare, however, doesnt yetpay for sleeve gastrectomies.

    T

his was my introduction to solar energy: In 1993 I moved to FortLauderdale, Fla., into a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired house, with a singlesolar panel propped on the at roof.

The at roof, of course, was a disaster in a place given to intensedownpours, and it soon put me on a rst-name basis with the roofer.

The solar panel, which during the rst viewing mattered less than theliving rooms peaked redwood ceiling, turned out to be astonishing. I hadve children and that panel provided all our hot water: no matter how

much we needed, that panel was the little engine that could. Whoeverinstalled that panel was on the vanguard of what would become an increasinglyactive industry for building supplies that use alternative energy.

Today you can nd a number of solar-energy products for the homeowner from something as basic and easy-to-install as solar-powered attic fans designedto keep attic temperature equal to that of the air outside to solar-panel arraysthat relegate a homes hookup to the electric company to the role of backup energysource.

According to Wes Tyler atthe South Carolina ClimatologyOfce, Columbia is blessed withsunshine: On average, Columbiahas 115 clear days and 103 partlycloudy days, for a total of 218 days

of mostly sunny days annually,he said. Thats considerably lowerthan Yuma, Ariz., (average: 246),but a lot better than anywhere inthe state of Washington. Midlandshomeowners are beginning to takeadvantage.

One of the most determinedis Gerald Rudolph, a retiredsoftware engineer. Rudolph notonly makes hay (actually, a varietyof vegetables) while the sun shines, but powers his 2,400-square-foothouse up to 6.84 kilowatts via32-by-3-foot solar panels mounted

on three 8-inch diameter poles in front of the house he shares with his wife,Cassandra Fralix, in Lake Murray.

They tilt toward the south, Rudolph says of the solar panels. Now theyreset to be optimal for the fall equinox. As it gets closer to the solstice, the angle is alittle different and I could manually adjust them to get a little more power, about 10percent. Of course, the sun is not always direct and the sky is not always clear, buton a clear or partly cloudy day we create about 22 to 26 kilowatt hours this time of

year.Though most installations are rooftop, the houses heavily wooded site made a

pole-mounted system the better, if less aesthetic, way to go.When you drive up, you can see them, said Fralix, a retired educator. For me,

its oh wow why cant they look like a tree? But the 20-by-60-foot vegetablegarden provides both vegetables and some camouage.

In most months, the panels generate more power than the couple use. The panels

are Sunpowers Serengeti Solar modules, installed by South Carolinas SunstoreSolar. Were Quakers and concern for the environment is part of our beliefsystem, Rudolph said.
