Lake Manitou 2018 Monitoring QA/QC
Lake Manitou 2018 Monitoring Report Attachment 1
Quality-Assurance/Quality-Control (QA/QC) Sampling equipment was adequately cleaned prior to use during each sampling event. New,
clean collection bottles were provided by the analytical laboratory for all water quality chemistry
parameters. For both in-lake and drain sampling efforts, K&A field staff used clean, adequately
calibrated meters for measuring profiles and field parameters. Dissolved oxygen and temperature
were measured using a YSI ProODO Meter, specific conductivity was measured using a YSI
Pro30 Meter, and pH was measured using an Oakton pH450 Meter.
At each in-lake station, K&A field staff collected water samples using a WildCo Van Dorn
Sampler. Each depth-integrated composite chlorophyll a sample was collected in a clean opaque
plastic bottle and transferred to clean opaque bottles to prevent light exposure. Sediment samples
were collected using a Petite Ponar Dredge and composited in a clean stainless-steel bowl before
being transferred into sample jars and transported to the analytical laboratory.
At each drain monitoring station, K&A field staff collected samples by wading or reaching into
the center of the stream, upstream of any sediment stirred up during the collection process. Depth
of water was then recorded at the in-stream point where flow would be measured. Where
applicable, a staff gauge reading, width of flowing water, and/or depth of water overtopping the
flow control structure (weir), were also recorded. Where no flow control structure exists, average
velocities were measured using a Marsh McBirney Flo-Mate 2000 Flow Meter at the point of
fixed geometry (culvert) within the drain. Field parameters were measured in a clean, open faced
collection vessel containing water captured from the stream.
The following Table A1-1 outlines water chemistry parameters collected at each sampling
station, including in-lake and drain stations, during each sampling event.

Merit Laboratories was used for analysis of water quality and sediment chemistry parameters for
all sample events with the exception of the 10 May event, which was analyzed by Pace
Analytical Laboratories. Upstate Freshwater Institute (UFI) was used for analysis of all
chlorophyll a for all in-lake samples.
Table A1-2 below summarizes the standard methods used for processing and analyzing
analytical parameters in water samples collected during the 2018 monitoring.

1 Pace Analytical was used for the 10-May-18 sampling event only. Merit Laboratories were used for water
chemistry analyses on all other sampling event dates. 2 Performance resolution. 3 Samples preserved to pH <2 using sulfuric acid (10 drops/500mL).

Analytical Laboratory Report
General Report Notes
Analytical results relate only to the samples tested, in the condition received by the laboratory.
Methods may be modified for improved performance.
Results reported on a dry weight basis where applicable.
'Not detected' indicates that parameter was not found at a level equal to or greater than the reporting limit (RL).
40 CFR Part 136 Table II Required Containers, Preservation Techniques and Holding Times for the Clean Water Act specify that samples
for acrolein and acrylonitrile need to be preserved at a pH in the range of 4 to 5 or if not preserved, analyzed within 3 days of sampling.
QA/QC corresponding to this analytical report is a separate document with the same Merit ID reference and is available upon request.
Full accreditation certificates are available upon request. Starred (*) analytes are not NELAP accredited.
Samples are held by the lab for 30 days from the final report date unless a written request to hold longer is provided by the client.
Report shall not be reproduced except in full, without the written approval of Merit Laboratories, Inc.
Limits for drinking water samples, are listed as the MCL Limits (Maximum Contaminant Level Concentrations)
