Asking a friend or relative with a point and shoot camera may appear to

be a good way to save money, but you should always think carefully

before entrusting your wedding pictures to an amateur. Ask yourself,

what would they do if it was raining and all the pictures needed to be

taken indoors? Do they have the creative flair, tools and ability to offer

the style or effects you might want to see in your final album?

A professional, well trained photographer is likely to be an expert in lighting and composition.

They will have the knowledge and experience to cope with all eventualities and still produce a

great set of pictures that will be proud to show off for many years to come.

When to start looking for your wedding photographer?

It is never too early to start looking for your wedding photographer as many of the best ones are

booked up more than a year in advance. The trick is to find a professional with a good track

record. A good place to start might be by asking for recommendations from family or friends.

Ask your chosen venue if they are able to recommend any good local photographers. Another

good place to try is professional bodies such as the SWPP or MPA, whose qualifications and

members are recognised for their professional excellence.

What to look for in your wedding photographer?

A good photographer will give you the opportunity to view selections of images from previous

weddings. It is very easy to look at single shots from many different weddings; however what

you should be looking for is consistently good shots from the same wedding as well as having a

set of images that visually tell the story of the day. It is important to find someone that you like

and get along with, who is excited about the prospect of photographing your wedding, has a

great attitude and wants to do the best possible job for you both.

What type of style of wedding photographs do you want?

It’s only natural that you’ll probably want plenty of pictures taken on the day. They will all look

fantastic and take very little time to organise. However you need to be aware that even great

photographs take time to be created and that quantity is no substitute for quality. Even the

most natural looking shots may take time to set up, so it is wise to be aware that the

photography will take up time during the days schedule, before, during and after the ceremony.

Lorraine Oates of Powder & Paint tells you what to look for in your wedding photographer

Page 5: Lake District Wedding Guide

Wedding

A professional photographer will discuss with

you what style of images you will be happiest

with and who you do and don’t want in your

pictures. They will guide you on timings for any

formal/romantic shots and liaise with the venue’s

catering team/coordinator to understand their

schedule.

Lastly, find out what the total cost of your

photography package will be, what it includes

and agree it in writing. How long will the

photographer stay? Will there be travelling costs,

VAT etc? Many packages also include an album

and specific number of prints/ images so find out

exactly what kind of album and how many prints

you will be getting for your money.

Don’t forget, many photographers will keep

negatives and own the copyright for images so

any reprints must be ordered through them.

Some may place all or some of the “proofs” on

the internet for you to make your selection via

an on-line album often protected by a password.

Guests and family can often order prints via this

method too. All photographers have different

ways of handling your images at this stage so

discuss what you’d like beforehand to make sure

you are happy with what happens at the final

stages.

Good luck and best wishes to you both for you

forthcoming wedding and on finding your

perfect wedding photographer.

The choice of wedding venue is a really important one.

The venue creates the atmosphere for the whole day and the choice of venue will

depend largely on the number of guests, price and location.

The Lake District and Cumbria covers a wide geographical area and as well as the

hotspots of Bowness, Ambleside and Keswick there are towns and villages which

should also be on the list for consideration

Take a look at our TOWNS & VILLAGES pages to see what is on offer from the various

locations.

The preferred choice of venue will most likely be a hotel and there are a couple of

points to consider.

If the wedding party is small enough you

can opt for exclusive use of a hotel.

Make sure it is licensed for civil

weddings and then you can have a

registrar attend to issue the wedding

legal formalities.

Take a look at our licensed wedding

venues including registry offices here.

A second option would be to book a

larger hotel and although you would

not have exclusive use there will often

be spa facilities and extra lounges giving

some freedom for the guests who want

to have some private time.

Either way the first step is to take a look at

the hotels on offer, order some brochures,

make a shortlist and finally most important

of all make a visit up here to meet the

owners and get a feel for each of your

options before making a final choice.

Don’t forget things such as spectacular

backdrops for photographs and proximity to

transport etc.

Ideas for a great

The Lake District offers a wide range of activities for stag and hen do’s.

The level of activity is up to you so whether it is full on adrenaline pumping action or a

more sedate, adventure, the lakes has something for everyone.

River Deep Mountain High Activities have nine years experience in delivering high quality

outdoor fun with activities for larger groups including Gorge Walking, Abseiling, Raft

Building, Archery and Canoeing.

For petrol heads the hilly terrain offers excellent quad biking and off road driving

opportunities and Holmescales activity centre is a good starting point for off roading and

also has the perennial favourite paintballing on offer as well as clay pigeon shooting and

archery.

You can also try your hand at driving a tank!

You may of course just want to relax with a group of friends and whilst a hotel is a good

choice why not try a cottage instead? Take a look at our group accommodation selection

for ideas.

RomanceWith the Lake District having recently been voted the most popular place for a marriage proposal in

the UK in a Poll of eHarmony.co.uk members, we offer a little guidance to help love take its natural

course.

Whether you are planning to propose, spending your honeymoon here, or just enjoying a weekend

break, the Lake District offers endless possibilities for romance.

PoetsWherever you go you’ll be following in the footsteps of William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor

Coleridge, who, appropriately were part of the Romantic Movement of the late 1700’s and early 1800’s

If Romantic poets aren’t your thing then perhaps knowing that you’re in the land that Beatrix Potter

loved, or that Arthur Ransome immortalised in his book Swallows and Amazons will inspire you to new

levels of amour.

A Day TripHere’s a tried and tested itinerary for a romantic day out in the Lake District that can be extended with

an overnight stay if time and budget permit.

SteamIt starts with a short journey on a steam train, moves on to a

cruise on Windermere followed by an al fresco lunch by the

lake at Ambleside. The return journey offers a visit to Bowness

on Windermere where you can opt to check into a hotel and

enjoy dinner in the evening.

We start at The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway station

(Sat-Nav Postcode: LA12 8AL open April to October). Most

people will drive there but there are convenient bus stops for

travellers from both Kendal and from the Furness peninsula.

Purchase tickets for the combined train and cruise trip – good

value at around £20 per person, and enjoy an 18 minute ride

on a steam train from Haverthwaite to Lakeside.

lakesromance

www.discoverthelakes.co.uk Lake District Wedding Guide

Page 15: Lake District Wedding Guide

SailOn arrival at Lakeside, leave the train and take a

short walk to the jetty where you’ll begin your

journey to Ambleside. The cruise ships run all

year round but less frequently in the winter.

Now relax and enjoy the view from the lake.

There’s plenty of seating, inside, outside, and in

the bars and cafes or stand at the front of the

boat and have your own Titanic moment.

There are no icebergs in Windermere, although

it does occasionally freeze, so as your ferry pulls

in to the mid journey stop at Bowness, you can

watch the swans serenely floating by.

Onwards to Waterhead (about a mile short of

Ambleside) where you’ll disembark and take a

stroll along the shore of the Lake to the

Wateredge Inn which enjoys an unrivalled

position at the very northern tip of the lake.

LunchMake your choice from the menu and add a

bottle of the ultimate romantic drink –

Champagne to your order. Enjoy your al fresco

meal with beautiful views as a backdrop.

A post lunch stroll around the nearby village of Ambleside is now in order, particularly if you’re in the

market for outdoor gear.

Back to Waterhead to pick up your ship for the return journey. If you’re sailing back to Lakeside to

complete your journey – bon voyage but for those you taking the optional stopover in Bowness on

Windermere, there’s lots more to see and do.

ImpressAlight at Bowness and depending on the time of year (April to October) and time of day, captain your

own ship for an hour in a self drive motorboat or rowing boat available from the wooden huts to the

right of Bowness promenade.

www.discoverthelakes.co.uk Lake District Wedding Guide

Page 16: Lake District Wedding Guide

lakesromanceAccommodationReturn to terra firma and check in to your pre-booked accommodation. Ideally, you’ll have a 4 poster

bed and a lake view with another bottle of champagne on ice in your room.

Relax for a while and freshen up prior to dinner in your chosen restaurant. Pre booking is always a

good idea and is essential in high season.

DinnerThere are lots of restaurants to choose from and several where you can book both accommodation and

a meal with Jerichos in Windermere and The Angel Inn in Bowness both recommended.

Will you marry me?If a marriage proposal is your intention and you’ve passed up the opportunity to pop the question thus

far, you’re running out of time and on bended knee at dinner is the obvious remaining option.

BoogieIf you still have the energy after you’ve consumed your fine food and wine, there’s the option to spend

a few hours, well till 3am actually, in one of the best night clubs in the Lake District - The Wheelhouse

Club and Lounge Bar in Bowness http://www.bownessbay.com

Finally, your room awaits and ahem, that’s where you’ll have to take over.

PlanningAssuming that all’s gone well on the proposal front, you may wish to consider a return trip to plan your

wedding day and/or honeymoon

5 romantic things to do in the Lake DistrictWalk up to High Dam near Finsthwaite, throw caution and your clothes to the wind and go

skinny dipping.

Pack a picnic and stroll hand in hand to the top of Gummers Howe. Enjoy the wonderful view of

Windermere and Lakeside as you share your food and drink. Occasionally, a mystery woman

with a marvellous voice practices her singing on the fellside. If you're lucky enough to hear her,

enjoy.

Enjoy the lakes on horseback. Book a one hour or half day trek and trot off into the sunset

together.

Try a champagne balloon flight. Float above the Lakes on a flight of fancy - weather permitting

For me one of the most magical moments is watching the bride and groom taking their first married

steps from the church or registry office to the wedding limousine.

The drama and photo opportunity of these moments is always heightened by the choice of vehicle,

whether it be a Rolls Royce or something much more quirky such as a Morris Minor convertible or indeed

a horse and carriage.

The Lake District does not disappoint when it comes to choosing a wedding limousine.

If the designated driver has not indulged in any pre nuptial nerve calming imbibing of the odd tipple,

how about hiring a classic Austin Healey 3000 from Lakes & Dales Classic Car Hire for the ultimate in a

glamorous getaway.

They also have a Triumph Stag 4 seater if you would

like the best man to take the wheel while you sit

comfortably in the back.

A truly dramatic way to make an entrance is to hire a

horse drawn carriage for your wedding.

There are a number of companies offering this delightful

service, listed on the right.

Don’t forget that whichever method of transport you

choose it does tend to rain in the Lakes so an attendant

with an umbrella might be a good idea!!

Every bride has her own ideas and themes for her special day, Lake District florists can make these dreams

into reality. Your wedding day is the most important day of your life, and it is the perfect finishing

touches that Cumbrian florists can provide to make your memorable day even more special.

Brides Bouquets & Flowers Choosing the design to compliment your wedding dress, colour themes and ideas is so important to

create the perfect wedding picture.

The brides bouquet is the most important part of the flower designs, and everything else is made to

compliment this. As each bride is different there are so many different designs to choose from.

Shower bouquets are very popular, and look stunning with a traditional design dress. Hand tied bouquets

are also extremely popular and can be designed in a variety of ways from all round designs to over the

arm styles, being formal and packed in style or informal and loose country style.

Buttonholes & CorsagesFor the main wedding party, it is usual to have either identical or complementing buttonholes and

corsages. The grooms buttonhole is the most special of the designs and he may wish to have a single or

double flower matching the bride’s bouquet and colour. It is usual for the best man, dads and ushers to

either have the same design or a variation maybe in colour from the groom.

For the mothers of the bride and groom it is also usual for them to wear something to complement the

bridal designs, again they are a little more special than the ordinary guests. Wrist, handbag and hat

corsages are also popular.
