SUMMER....11

By Holly Thorpe

For Lake Chelan This Week

Exercise: not everyone’s favorite word. Marathon:

even fewer people’s favorite word.

But take the sunny shores of Lake Chelan, pair them

with the crisp September air of Washington, and toss

in a little wine as a prize? Hey, that doesn’t sound so

bad.

The Shore to Shore Marathon, Half-Marathon, and

10K run on Sept. 6 has all of that. It’s no wonder

the race, now in its 13th year, draws some 600

participants from around the world.

Runners all across the country, and even as far as

Japan and South Korea will participate.

“We continue to see strong interest in our marathon

and half-marathon races,” said race director Joel

Rhyner. “We will have record turnout for both of

those again, with about 50 percent of our overall

participants lining up for the half-marathon.”

Plus, experienced runners know that the 26.2-mile

marathon as the last Boston Marathon qualifier event

in the Northwest.

All runners, however, have a chance at the Vin du Lac

bottles that will be handed out as prizes.

At the finish line, competitors can cool off in the

beer garden, featuring Iron Horse craft brews. Iron

Horse Brewery is out of Ellensburg, and Vin du Lac is

located on Highway 150 in Chelan.

And if the weather is feeling particularly benevolent,

they can celebrate the race with a dip in Lake Chelan.

Lake Chelan This Week Friday, September 5, 2014 7FOOD

Page 8: Lake Chelan This Week - Sept. 5-11, 2014

This week’s pick:

About the Vineyards:

The Benson family made Chelan their full-time home in 1996 and began flirting with the idea of growing grapes for a vineyard around that time.

Enlisting the help of their son, the family planted 23 acres of vineyards in 2002 with 10 different varieties of grapes. In 2004, they harvested, and in 2005 the tasting room opened its doors for the first time. Currently, the winery has 12 different wines to try, and produces 5,000 cases annually.

The winery rests atop a hill on the north shore, overlooking Lake Chelan. On their website at bensonvineyards.com, they descibes the winery as “Mediterranean-inspired.”

What wines to try:

This year Benson secured a variety of medals in the North Central Washington Wine Awards hosted

in Wenatchee, in August. With a total of 13 medals, they won five silver (in Viognier and Late Harvest Viognier, Syrah and others), six bronze (in Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Merlot and others), a gold and a double gold.

We highly recommend their gold and double gold winners:

• Double Gold: 2011 Cabernet Franc ($35)• Gold: 2012 Chardonnay ($21)

Why stop by?:

With occasional live music gracing the winery (they just finished up a summer concert series featuring local acts every weekend) the estate is a perfect venue for all sorts of events.

But even if you don’t have anything special planned, you can heed one of their slogans: “Come for the view, stay for the wine.”

“On a personal level, it’s rewarding to see that

people enjoy running here and experiencing this

beautiful community and lake,” said Rhyner.

RunWenatchee, organizer of the run, will have

nearly 100 volunteers at the event running aid

stations and manning the finish line.

Proceeds from the race will go on to benefit the

Chelan High School and Manson High programs,

and the local chapter of Girls on the Run.

Runners and visitors alike can bask in some of the

last summer sun Chelan will see for a while. Of

course, its falls are awfully splendid, too.

And hey, I guess they’ll get a little exercise too.

Like we said, the holidays are almost here … better

start working off that pumpkin pie now.
