SUMMER... 11
By Holly Thorpe
For Lake Chelan This Week
Seven years ago, Yogachelan was just getting its feet
underneath it. A few classes a week in a rented space.
Lynda Kennedy, co-founder and current owner, started
it with educational intentions.
“My mission is to expose people
to the health benefits of
yoga. It isn’t just about
movement, it’s about
medication, relaxation,
restoration,” she
said. “It’s about
exploring the
connection between
our minds and our
bodies.”
Today, Yogachelan
is a well-known name
in the valley, with it’s
own studio on Woodin
Ave. and classes every day
of the week. So what’s the key to
success? A little creativity, according to Kennedy.
“My approach is probably a bit different than a yoga
studio in Seattle,” she said. “I create yoga adventures.
A lot of people are looking for something fun and
different to do, and it attracts them.”
This weekend’s Sunset Yoga session paired with live
music is one of many events held every year. Other
events are weekly, like the Stretch & Sip Yoga at
Tsillan Cellars every Monday at 9:15 a.m.

Defy GravityLiz Doyle reveals some of the secrets behind impressive hand poses on Oct. 11. Already know how to pose on your hands? She’s got a chal-lenge for you. If you register online before Oct. 1, the price is $35.
Vino, Vinyasa & Electric BikesYogachelan’s three hour Chelan Crush event on Oct. 18, featuring wine tasting, an adventure around the city via electric bike, and vinyasa yoga at various locations. No expe-rience necessary. Register online, the early bird price (before Oct. 12) is $75.
“I combined yoga with wine tasting afterwards. It’s totally about slowing down and connecting with our bodies.”
Of course, wine tasting is pretty tame. Kennedy has paired yoga with just about every activity available in the valley: snowshoeing, ziplining, rafting, paddle boarding, hiking and even electric biking (which is as cool as it sounds). Maybe you’ve never paddle boarded, snowshoed or done yoga — no problem.
“If someone has never tried yoga before, what’s going to make them comfortable?” said Kennedy, describing her method for creating her adventures. “The message about
yoga is that you have to find the one that works for you.”
Contrary to popular belief, yoga isn’t just one form of exercise, but a title for a wide variety of practices. Yoga can be a gentle, therapeutic exercise or a sweat-inducing workout. Yogachelan has both of those, and everything between.
“I have a wide variety of students,” said Kennedy.
Beginners or those who aren’t confident that they can stand up to a more intensive sesion can try the “sloga” or Gentle Yoga offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings
Partnered with the Wellness Place,
Yogachelan offers free classes for cancer patients. And seniors can take the Mature Movers course, designed to work on core strength and balance.
Of course, maybe you’re in great shape and well-versed in yoga. Check out the Hot Yoga or the Power Yoga which are more high-energy sessions.
If you’re especially interested in getting better, you might even check out the Defy Gravity workshop on Oct. 11, which will teach hand poses.
So, how will you find your center? Schedule your session atyogachelan.com or by calling 206-818-2619. The studio is at 206 A East Woodin Ave. in Chelan.

This week’s pick: About:
Right on the lake side, and the only
winery resting on tribal land, Wapato
Point Cellars has carved out a little
piece of paradise for itself ever since
it opened in 2003. Of course, in the
beginning it was just a tasting bar that
would eventually dabble in a small
plate menu. However, a few years
later they bought the land (they’d
previously had a lease) and decided
to open their doors as a winery.
April Williams, her brother, her
parents and her husband, Ben
Williams have transformed what was
once a struggling property into the
perfect day out for a family.
“We’re very, very family-friendly,”
said Ben. “And because we have this
big lawn families can sit on the patio
and kids can go play on the grass.”
He also notes, “It’s not only family-
friendly, it’s family-owned.”
They recommend…
The Reserve Syrah. “It’s a nice,
full-bodied wine from right here
in Manson,” said Ben. Aged in
Hungarian oak, this wine is a
unique local treat. Ben describes it
as “jammy” and “fruit-forward.”
Why stop by?
There’s a lot to like about
Wapato Point Cellars. From the
diverse menu at the Winemaker’s
Grill (Williams recommends the fi let
mignon) to the broad front yard
with space for the kiddos, you can
kill an entire afternoon here. But
the number one reason to stop by?
“The quality of the food and wine
are certainly excellent, but I think
what people would remember from
their experience is the hospitality,”
Ben said. “It’s a comfortable place
for families. I think when people
leave they would typically say they
were treated very well.”
