Introduction

Welcome to Ladywood Teaching School’s Continuing Professional Development Programme for the Spring Term 2013/14.

The programme includes comprehensive training courses to suit a wide range of needs, including courses on Teaching and Learning, SEND and Succession Planning. Courses are open to all schools and settings.

In addition to the courses listed in this booklet Ladywood Teaching School and the wider alliance are able to design, co-ordinate and commission bespoke courses / programmes specific to your needs. Not only by accessing training but for example signposting School to School support opportunities and Specialist Leaders in Education.

Our effective CPD is creative, collaborative and ultimately will have an impact. We facilitate programmes which challenge and engage participants, encourage collaborative learning with others and develop reflective practices. All our work is Quality Assured by the Teaching School.

The Programme is organised into 2 sections:

Within each section you will find training courses appropriate to all practitioners.

How to book onto a course

Please complete and return the Booking Form enclosed within this booklet.

Cancellations

A cancellation must be made at least 3 weeks prior to the event date otherwise the following charges will apply.

Cancellation Period Charge

• If you cancel between 10 and 15 working days of the course commencement date. 50%

• If you cancel a course within 10 working days of the course commencement date. 100%

None attendance without prior notice will always be charged at the full rate. For all cancellations please notify Ladywood Teaching School on 01204 333400.

Ladywood reserves the right to cancel any course/programme due to insufficient numbers up to 7 days prior to the course/programme start date; any fees paid will be refunded in full.

How to pay for courses

You will be invoiced in advance of the course taking place.

For internal Bolton MBC transfers, please contact your Finance Officer and request a transfer coded to ED06 374 99990.

For other organisations or cheque book schools, please make cheques payable to Bolton MBC & send to Ladywood School & Outreach Service, Masefield Road, Little Lever, Bolton BL3 1NG.

Please quote invoice number with all payments.

Parking

There is limited parking available at the rear of school. Please would delegates park sensitively on the streets if necessary around school, avoiding obstructing pavements or blocking residential access.

The course timings have been specifically designed to avoid peak school traffic, so we would be grateful if you arrived promptly.

Refreshments

Refreshments available and lunch provided where specified.

Course Cancellation/Reschedule

Where there are too few delegates to make the course viable we will give delegates as much notice as possible that the course has been rescheduled or cancelled.

Code NQT Newly Qualified Teacher Programme

Description: The Teach and Learn programme was designed to consolidate, challenge and extend the skills required for basic teaching pedagogy. Based around the new standards for QTS status, the programme, through facilitation, will break down all the aspects required of an effective classroom practitioner, develop understanding and through facilitation build new skills and move your teaching to a higher level. The programme moves through engagement and challenge, differentiation, assessment and other classroom skills to enable you to understand yourself as a learner and effective team member. This programme reflects the latest Ofsted criteria for teaching and learning.

Requirements: None

Target Audience: Newly Qualified Teachers and their coach/mentor.

Course Date: NQT: 6 full day sessions, 2 per term, throughout the Spring and Summer Term.Coach: 1 full day and 3 half days, throughout the Spring and Summer TermFor exact dates please contact Ladywood Teaching School.

Course Objectives: By the end of this course you will have had the opportunity to:• Know concepts underpinning all classroom practice and teaching

pedagogy. • Understand the impact of these concepts on everyday practice. • Be able to deliver these concepts through consistent practice. • Undertake a self-audit of traits, skills and learning styles, in order

to be a more effective team member. • Improve everyday classroom practice for the benefit of yourself

and the children you teach.

Code OTP 4 Outstanding Teacher Programme

Description: A ten week course aimed at focusing on a range of aspects of teaching and learning such as challenge, engagement, assessment, differentiation, questioning and planning. There are linked practical tasks back in your own school including applying what you learn and observation in host schools. There is one and a half days coaching element within the 10 week programme.

Requirements: None

Target Audience: Teachers that are consistently ‘good’ or borderline ‘outstanding’ that have the capacity to evaluate and develop their practice into ‘outstanding’ teachers.

Course Date: The course will include 2 full days and 5 half days at Ladywood Training Room, in addition to 3 sessions to be completed in your own setting. Start and finish dates appear below and will be every Tuesday. For exact dates please contact Ladywood Teaching School.

Spring Term 2014 (Session 1: 21 January 2014 - Session10: 1st April 2014)

Code PL 2 P Level Awareness & Understanding

Description: This course provides background knowledge to P Levels together with practical activities using the P Level Statements. This course also includes an insight into and how to use Progression Guidance.

Target Audience: SENCOs / ARR Co-Ordinators / Teachers / Teaching Assistants

Course Date: 10 February 2014 Time: 1pm – 3pm

Course Objectives: By the end of the session you will:• Understand what P Levels are.• Understand how to use P Levels and for which children they are

appropriate for.• Experience using P Levels to assess written work.• Understand how Progression Guidance can be used to track

progress for children working within the P levels.

Code CSV 2 Communication Strategies & Use of Visual Supports

Description: This course will explore the use of purposeful communication strategies, which will help identify and support those children who have difficulty in participating and engaging in learning. During the session you will explore interaction, questioning and enhancing your learning environment through the use of effective communication strategies. By the end of the session all delegates will have an interactive resource they can implement in the learning environment immediately

Requirements: None

Target Audience: Primarily aimed at Teaching Assistants however SENCOs and Class Teachers may also find it useful.

classroom practice• Demonstrate practical examples of how to embed communication

Code WM 2 Working Memory

Description: This course will provide a practical and interactive workshop aimed at KS1 and KS2 practitioners develop an overview of working memory and its functions. The training will look at 3 key aspects and give useful strategies to use in the learning environment.

Course Objectives: By the end of the session you will:• Memory and how it develops • Working memory and what effect this can have with children’s

learning• Strategies to aid and develop working memory in class.

Code ASD A2 Autism Spectrum Disorders – An Awareness (Primary)

Description: In this session you will be introduced to autism spectrum disorders. You will consider pupils’ difficulties relating to the triad of impairments and pupils’ sensory differences. You will be introduced to some of the strategies that can be used to support pupils’ social communication, social imagination and social interaction skills.

Requirements: This course is to be booked in conjunction with Classroom Strategies to Support Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Course Objectives: By the end of the session you will:• Have a basic understanding of what autism spectrum disorder is

and of the difficulties that pupils may experience.• Be aware of some strategies to support pupils with autism spectrum

disorders in the classroom.

Code ASD S2 Classroom Strategies to Support Autism Spectrum Disorders (Primary)

Description: In this workshop session you will have an opportunity to explore different strategies that can be used to support pupils with autism spectrum disorders in the classroom. You will consider how you can use strategies and resources in your current role and speak with colleagues about their ideas and experiences in supporting pupils with ASD.

Requirements: This course is to be booked in conjunction with Autism Spectrum Disorders – An Awareness.

Code SLCNS 2 Speech Language and Communication Needs Strategies

Description: An introduction to SLCN and supporting strategies in the learning environment. During the session delegates will become familiar with the difficulties associated with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and know how these impact on children’s learning inside and outside of the classroom.

Delegates will become aware of the terms associated with SLCN and know how to identify the different aspects of SLCN e.g. receptive, expressive and semantic pragmatic language needs. The course will highlight some general classroom strategies to help support children with SLCN including whole class approaches, intervention programmes and the use of multi-media so staff feel confident to meet the needs of children with SLCN in their settings.

12.

Code TP@P1 Talking Partners @ Primary

Description: TP@Primary is a 2 day course aimed at understanding the language and communication needs of pupils with additional needs at Primary School level. The training consists of understanding how to deliver the 10 week intervention speaking and listening programme - [email protected] the training there is opportunity to become familiar with the programme materials and activities and know how this can be successfully delivered back in the school setting, including assessment and evaluation thus measuring impact.

your setting.• Evaluate the effectiveness of the programme.• Identify next steps to supporting children to further develop their

speaking and listening skills.

Code QC 2 The Quiet Child

Description: An introduction to the profile of a quiet child. During the session delegates will be introduced to the differences between selective mutism, reluctant communicators and shy / quiet children. The session will highlight the impact that shyness and quietness can have on the progress of children. The delegates will be introduced to appropriate strategies to help support quiet children in their learning and social environment so that they feel more comfortable and become more confident in their communication and learning.

Mutism, Reluctant Communicators and Quiet Children.• Have an awareness of the impact on academic and social learning

that can be experienced by quiet children.• Know how to recognise the difference between quiet children and

other communication / learning difficulties.• Be aware of strategies to meet the academic and social needs of

quiet children so they can become more confident communicators.

Code LT 2 Lego Therapy

Description: Lego Therapy is an intervention to support the development of language skills. In this training you will learn how to deliver Lego Therapy sessions and be offered a chance to experience the intervention as a facilitator and learner.
