Overview Pocket shawls are not a new or original concept. They have been around in many forms for decades and enjoy a resurgence in popularity from time to time. I came across a knitting pattern that I loved while browsing on the internet. I especially loved the pocket detail which is very different from most versions on offer. If you are a knitter, check it out at the following link. Hugs and Cable Wrap Knit Pattern As I am not a proficient enough knitter to be able to complete this, I decided to take the broad concept and come up with a crochet version. My crochet version is very different to the design that was my inspiration, but I love it. I have made 4 already! I still hope to try the knitted version sometime as I really like it. It is casual, but stylish, warm, and cosy. It is also very easy to wear and goes especially well with a

pair of blue jeans and some great boots.

Size Size 1: Approximately 162 x 45cm (63.75 x 17.75 inches) – 29 cable repeats Size 2: Approximately 171 x 45cm (67 x 17.75 inches) – 31 cable repeats Size 3: Approximately 180 x 45cm (71 x 17.75 inches) – 33 cable repeats To decide on the correct size: Measure from fingertip to fingertip over the shoulder and neck. This will give you a good idea of which size would be most suitable for you. If necessary, add extra cable repeats on both the main shawl and the pockets to make a longer version. Add ±100g of extra yarn for every 2 extra cable repeats.

    Hook Size

    • If you have a loose tension, it is recommended that you adjust your hook size down from the recommended sizes in this pattern, to obtain the correct gauge.

    • If you have a particularly tight tension, you should adjust your hook size up to obtain the correct gauge.

    Difficulty

The testers have given this pattern an easy rating. With the assistance of the video tutorials, I believe that advanced beginners would be able to easily complete the project, however, you would need to have basic crochet skills, as this is not a “how to crochet” project.

Yarn If you decide to use a different weight yarn to that as specified, the Lady D Pocket Shawl will not be the same size as the sample made in this pattern. Please ensure that you are using the correct weight yarn before starting. This, together with gauge, is very important. If you are unsure of what weight your yarn is, please check the label for the number of meters/yards included. The yarn should be approximately 105m / 115 yards – DK (3) per 50g ball. You may use any brand of yarn if it meets the requirements as specified. Tap or click here to view ColourSpun kit options. The preferred yarn used in this pattern sample is ColourSpun Pure Merino Super Wash. ColourSpun is a South African brand, which we are justifiably very proud of for the following reasons:

    • ColourSpun yarn is created by hand; therefore, each skein is imbued with the artist's energy and will have its own unique characteristics.

    • This extra soft, super wash yarn is mill spun and Herco treated to prevent felting and then hand dyed in our indie dye studio using an earth friendly process and dyes.

    • All the dyes used are GOTS approved and have excellent wash-fast and light-fast properties.

Refer to the chart below for more information on yarn types.

Gauge Gauge (tension) is very important when making a garment. It is essential that you make a swatch using sc before starting the pattern. Gauge worked in sc and measured over 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) must be: 18 rows x 15sts Each cable repeat (Rows 13 to 18) should measure ±4.5cm (1.75 inches). If you are finding it difficult to achieve the correct height, but your width is correct, then please Google “Crochet Golden Loop”. You will find several video tutorials which will assist you to easily understand why this is happening and how to adjust your crochet technique to achieve the correct gauge.
