dear friends,

Amazon. Apple. AirBNB. Google. Fab. Ford. Target. Samsung. Sea Change Health. Virgin Airlines. Yelp. Uber. These organi-zations are considered by their industry peers, employees, and consumers to be among the most innovative companies of the 21st century. Forbes magazine probed leaders of these and other groundbreaking firms to identify traits they considered instru-mental to their success. They zeroed-in on five essential skills for modern entrepreneurs: Questioning, Observing, Collabo-rating, Experimenting, and Associational Thinking (drawing associations among unrelated things). Sound familiar? Forbes could well be describing a Lab School student! Children with learning differences are by nature creative, curious, and imagi-native. They often value “process” over product: brainstorming, collaboration, reflection, revision, and presentation. As I read the Forbes profile of outstanding 21st century CEOs (who often pride themselves on being “disruptive!”), I was again reminded that our students’ inherent traits are highly valued in today’s workplace. The ability to think and learn differently is the hall-mark of a modern, successful leader. CEOs who remain mired in the rut of linear, unimaginative, restrictive thinking will find themselves left in the dust.

If you have ever doubted your child’s ability to have a bright, exuberant, rewarding future, set those doubts aside. At Lab, we recognize that your child’s differences are tangible strengths. We are fully committed to capitalizing upon those strengths,

encouraging our students to be inventive, quizzical, collabora-tive, and appropriately outrageous in their approach to problem solving. Our students have always been capable of remarkable achievements. How wonderful that the modern world has finally caught up with us!

Of course, Lab School couldn’t offer such an outstanding edu-cation without your generous support. Your financial contribu-tions in 2012-2013 allowed us to reach new heights in programs school wide. With gratitude,

k ather ine sch a ntzh e a d o f s c h o o l

PS: Over the coming months, you will be hearing details of plans to update our classrooms, technology, arts spaces, and athletic facilities. After all, 21st-century leaders deserve a 21st-century learning environment. I think you will be as excited as I am by what the future holds for Lab. We invite your support of that vision.

From our Head of School

From our Board Chair

dear friends,

When I reflect on my first year as Lab’s new board chair, I am so very impressed by the commitment of our Board of Trustees as stewards of this great institution. Our donors, parents, faculty, staff, and students rely upon our Board to be vigilant guard-ians of the school’s financial strength. You contribute to Lab thoughtfully, with a measure of sacrifice and selectivity. In turn, the Board devotes time and attention to balancing the school’s budget and assuring Lab’s long-term financial stability. The decisions we make, in tandem with Katherine and the adminis-trative leaders, are measured against many benchmarks: what is best for our students, what will allow Lab to forge new inroads at the forefront of education, and how these decisions protect the school’s fiscal health so that we can continue to fulfill our mission. Your contributions are in good hands.

Last year, our Board worked harder than ever putting in count-less hours in committee meetings to develop an outstanding master plan for our campus. This plan will expand and update our facilities in ways that directly benefit every Lab student and the adults who teach them. The Board also laid the groundwork for a comprehensive fundraising initiative, which will allow us to implement this exciting new master plan expeditiously, while protecting the long-term financial assets and independence of Lab School. Providing such a transformative, 21st-century learning environment is one of the fundamental components of the school’s strategic plan. The Board has also been effectively

overseeing other strategic initiatives, such as assuring financial sustainability, increasing academic rigor, and, introducing cut-ting edge technology into all areas of the school.

Of course, no board works in a vacuum. Lab is blessed in having a Head of School with vision, academic prowess, fortitude, and passion. We also have a “best in class” faculty and staff whose dedication humbles me every day.

As Board Chair, I am constantly reminded of the abiding gener-osity of our entire school community, from the school’s leader-ship and staff, to its parents and children. Each and every one of you – our loyal donors, friends, and volunteers -- is generous with your support. I never take it for granted, and I cannot thank you enough. With Thanks,

In January Lab was honored to announce the establishment of the $500,000 D. Stephen and Sally Seawright Scholarship Fund for students with a gift from the Clark Charitable Foundation. In honor of Steve Seawright’s retirement from, and years of service to, Clark Enterprises, Inc. and Sally Seawright’s years of service to The Lab School of Washington, the scholarship will provide tuition assistance to students of the school.

The announcement was celebrated by a large assembly and presentation for students, staff, parents, and friends of The Lab School. Courtney Clark Pastrick, President of the Foundation, Jim Brinkman, and Danielle Hamberger from the Clark Charitable Foundation, as well as Steve and Sally Seawright, were in attendance to receive the thanks of the school during the presentation. During her thank you remarks, Katherine impressed the impor-tance of philanthropy upon Lab students. “For students with learning differences, Lab can be key to reaching their potential; and yet many students who need Lab cannot afford it. Recogniz-ing that there are fewer resources than ever to help families pay tuition, the Board of Trustees designated increased financial aid as one of our strategic priorities. Needless to say, today’s gener-ous gift in honor of Sally and Steve Seawright greatly increases our ability to meet this priority and to open the doors to more students with financial need. This is an extraordinary gift to fulfill an extraordinary need.” Sally Seawright was the Head of the Junior High at The Lab School from 1994 until she retired in 2007. When the founder of Lab and Head of School, Sally L. Smith, passed away in December 2007, Sally Seawright stepped in to serve as Interim Head of School until July 2009. She was known as an extraordi-nary administrator, passionate advocate for her students, and a continual source of wisdom about learning differences and LD education. Her husband, Steve Seawright, is the founder of real estate development firm Seawright Homes of Bethesda, MD, a wholly owned subsidiary of Clark Enterprises, Inc. since 1978. He is a second generation builder and a member and officer of several builders’ associations. Reflective of his company’s commitment to community service, Steve has served on the boards of several nonprofit housing corporations.

We couldn’t have done it without you! The 2012-2013 year was another resounding fundraising success - thanks to the dedication and enthusiasm of over 30 parent volunteers and our persuasive co-chairs Kim Sperduto and Marsha Pearcy, Jim Roumell and Debbie Billet-Roumell, and Doug and Diane Wiley. We achieved our goal with 83% parent participation and raised over $735,000, which was put towards meeting the school’s immediate needs.

Our goal was made this year with the help of two new major fund-raising initiatives - the Senior Class and The Faculty/Staff Gift Campaigns. We were thrilled to announce that after learning of the Annual Fund and its important role, all 27 graduating seniors gave enthusiastically. The Staff Campaign also showed a great start, which generated very strong support for Lab and the Annual Fund. Thank you all for your leadership and commitment to Lab.

Gifts to the Annual Fund support everything we do at Lab, from helping to fairly compensate our faculty and staff, maintaining and improving our facilities, equipping our classrooms with purpose-ful technology, and allowing Lab be a leader in educating students with learning differences.

Thank you to all who supported the Annual Fund this year - none of what we do at Lab would be possible without you!

The 28th Annual Gala Honoring Outstanding Achievers with Learning Differences delivered another year of inspiration, thought-provoking presentations and good old fashioned fun. Chaired by Lab parents Sheila and David Feinberg (Ethan Fein-berg, Intermediate) the event was enjoyed by hundreds of guests who gathered at the National Building Museum to support Lab’s mission and raise necessary funds. Lab parent Mara Liasson (Eli Cuneo, Elementary) NPR’s National Political Correspondent, emceed the event with her engaging brand of energy, wit and poise. The evening began with the screening of a new video, The Lab School Difference, which featured neuroscience and education experts extolling the unique and often unrecognized

cognitive strengths of those with learning differences. This was confirmed by our 4 honorees: Willard Wigan, world renowned micro-sculpture, Peter R. Fischer, Senior Managing director at BlackRock and former Under Secretary of the US Treasury for Domestic Finance, Ben Foss, author and founder of learning disabilities non-profit Headstrong nation, and alumni awardee and entrepreneur Brandon Estrin, Class of ‘96. They took the stage and delivered uplifting stories about how their learning dif-ferences, which at first seemed burdensome, shaped and drove their success. (To learn more about our 2012 awardees, please visit www.labschool.org/gala2012). The night ended the way any great evening should - with cupcakes and dancing.

In our 13th year, Baltimore Lab School grew stronger than ever. Support for the School reached new heights, including over $400,000 raised and the establish-ment of both our first endowment, and first designated scholarship fund, the Dr. Ellen McDaniel Scholarship Fund. Our ten Advisory Board members in Baltimore are committed to the future of our school, and we are inspired by their leadership and generosity. Our creative, highly-educated, and dedicated faculty and staff continue to provide a unique and transformative program for our students, and have shown exceptional commitment through their record 100% participation in the Annual Fund.

Our unprecedented year in Baltimore was marked by significant highlights. Sally L. Smith’s rich legacy continues to live on through our Academic Clubs and arts-based approach to education. We’re happy to announce the debut of two new Academic Clubs in 2013: Discovery Club and American Revolution Club, two multi-sensory gateways for our students to connect history, art, literature, and more. Our Outdoor Education program has grown considerably, exposing our bright students to the Chesapeake Bay, aquatic life, environmentalism, and conservation. Regarding technology, our Digital Learning initiatives have provided new opportunities for online research, videography, and self-publishing. Nota-bly, Mrs. Feldman’s tenth grade English class created Baltimore Lab School’s first electronic student newspaper, The Lab Ten News. After-School programs and

athletics, like swimming, rock-climbing, basketball and cross country, give our stu-dents inspiring, engaging experiences that foster team-building and self-confidence. In short, Baltimore Lab has found new op-portunities for curricular alignment and transformative student experiences. Our Global & Community studies, spearheaded by high school history and English teachers, led a group of students to England and France in March, for an incredible learning adventure. As our students toured The Louvre in Paris, the reconstructed Globe Theatre in London, and the infamous Normandy beach, their knowledge of history and literature be-came more tangible, and they made mem-ories to last a lifetime. Closer to home, students explored our local treasures, like the world-renowned Walters Art Muse-um and The Baltimore Museum of Art, in addition to Fort McHenry, Hershey Park and New York City. Our students thrive in our urban environment, and have gained valuable skills like reading maps and navigating city transit. Monetary contributions, grants, and in-kind donations facilitated major enhancements at Baltimore Lab School this year. The Jeffrey and Elaine Christ Professional Development Fund, Lab’s first endowment, was established in 2013, and will be used to fund professional development awards. Support from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation has strength-ened the reach of our Outdoor Education program, while funds from The Mary and Daniel Loughran Foundation have been

designated to help provide financial aid to students who could otherwise not afford a Lab education. We were fortunate to re-ceive tremendous donations from McCor-mick & Company, The Kenneth S. Battye Charitable Trust, and our thoughtful and generous network of parents, grandpar-ents, and special friends. As the school year ended, we celebrated the installation of a new indigenous plant garden, which will be used as an outdoor ecology class-room, new SMARTBoards, made possible by an anonymous donor, and a much improved Black Box Theatre. In closing, Baltimore Lab School contin-ues to inspire our teachers and students in a safe learning environment, while instill-ing a love of learning not only at Lab, but beyond. Our difference is extraordinary. You are extraordinary. We are most grateful for your support that enables us to bring the rich tradition of joy, rigor, and an exceptional education to countless students with learning differences. On behalf of Baltimore Lab School, I thank you for your commitment to our program, and hope you will share in my optimism for Lab’s bright future.

The Lab School of Washington is different

from other schools, in extraordinary ways. Our

students are bright, creative and engaged. They

also learn differently, in ways that The Lab

School understands, supports and celebrates.

We recognize our students’ exceptional talents,

capitalize on their strengths, and show them

how their non-traditional approach to

problem-solving and achievement is uniquely

suited to 21st-century success. Our innovative,

arts-based curriculum has continually placed

Lab at the forefront of learning differences

education.

Founded in 1967, by Sally L. Smith, The Lab

School is recognized worldwide as the leader

in our field, backed by groundbreaking re-

search and professional resources that help our

students reach their highest aspirations. For

students with learning differences, including

dyslexia, ADHD and related language-based

learning difficulties, Lab transforms lives.

The donor lists included in this Annual Report were compiled

by the Institutional Advancement Offices of The Lab School

of Washington and Baltimore Lab School. We have made ev-

ery effort to prepare this report accurately. However, despite

our best efforts, errors and omissions do occasionally occur.

If you made a contribution between August 1, 2012 and July

31, 2013 and your name was omitted, please accept our sincere

apologies. To advise us of an error, please contact the Insti-

tutional Advancement Office at 202-944-2201 or email marty.
