LAB SAFETY AND EQUIPMENT – WHAT
YOU NEED TO KNOWYOU WILL CLASS TIME TO WORK ON THESE LAB STATIONS
READ THE AGENDA BOARD TO KNOW QUIZ DATE
• Do I know my way around a science lab?
• Why are safety considerations important in a lab setting?
• What are the tools that scientists use to gather
information/evidence?
BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS
If there are pieces of equipment or a computer at the station, follow directions and treat items with respect
Stay on task – you will receive one warning ONLY
Task expectations –
Complete stations by completing the tasks and responding on your page
If you do not finish, you need to talk to the teacher to come in to complete it.

LAB EQUIPMENT - WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
THERE ARE 5 EQUIPMENT STATIONS
LAB TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT STATIONS
Some equipment you will be working with:
STATIONS PAGES/INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH TABLE – READ
THE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST!!
Thermometer – 2 slides
Graduated cylinder – 2 slides
Triple beam – 3 slides
Meter stick - 1 slide
Digital scale – 1
EQUIPMENT TIPS:
Read the water line in the graduated cylinder at the
meniscus
Once you have used either scale, take the items off or
the scale and put it back to zero.
You can take the thermometers out of the beakers in
order to read the temperature (in Celsius)
Lab Safety sections: The information is at each station,
read both the station pages and your response page in
order to complete the work.

THE THERMOMETERThermometers are very fragile and must be handled with care. Read the following rules for the proper use of a thermometer.
1. Never "shake down" a thermometer to reset it.
2. Never use a thermometer to stir a liquid.
3. Never allow a thermometer to touch the bottom of a container that is being heated.
Read the following directions for using and reading a thermometer.
1. Place the bulb end of the thermometer into the object with an unknown temperature.
2. Wait several minutes for the thermometer to adjust to the temperature of the object.
3. Without removing the thermometer from the object, note the number nearest the top of the column of liquid in the thermometer.
Answer the following questions on the worksheet provided.
1. What are the temperatures shown by these thermometers?
At this station you will notice two beakers that are labeled “A” and “B”. Use your thermometer correctly to complete the following:
2. What is the temperature of Beaker A?
3. What is the temperature of Beaker B?
4. Why must you read the temperature without removing the
thermometer from the liquid?
5.Why should the thermometer never be used to stir a
liquid?
PART II: THE GRADUATED CYLINDER
Read the following directions for using and reading a
graduated cylinder:
1. The cylinder should be on a flat surface.
2. Look at the cylinder from the side at eye level. The top
of the liquid should be at eye level. The view of the
surface of the liquid will be curved. This curved surface is
called the “meniscus”.
3. Read the graduated cylinder at the bottom of the
meniscus.

TO COMPLETE THE LAB
Complete EVERY station – they do not need to be
completed in order - Neatness counts
After this lab is completed, there is a quiz that covers
lab safety and basic lab tools and skills.
If you finish the lab in class, turn in the page next class
– you can use this activity to help you study.
HOW YOU WILL BE ACCESSED:
A QUIZ!
You may NOT participate in any future labs until you have passed
