ARTERIAL SUPPLY TO SPINAL CORD & BRAIN

Spinal Cord ArteriesFrom posterior spinal anastomoses -nutrient branches that supply dorsal columns and posterior horn (posterior 1/3) From anterior spinal system -nutrient branches that supply most of spinal cord (anterior 2/3)

Occlusion of the artery of Adamkiewicz could result in infarction of lower thoracic and upper lumbar areas of the cord producing a loss of sensation and voluntary movement inferior to this level.

VENOUS RETURN FROM THE SPINAL CORD

Spinal cord plexus

ARTERIAL SUPPLY TO THE BRAINSTEM

Short circumferential pontine arteries – see lecture notes

Cortical Branches

Cortical Branches

Cortical Branches

middle cerebral artery (p. 17, 2-10) - in the lateral fissure      - has cortical branches that supply the lateral cortex

anterior cerebral artery (p. 27, 2-25) -   in the mid-sagittal fissure      - cortical branches supply medial frontal & parietal cortex

posterior cerebral artery (p. 19, 2-13; p. 27, 2-25) - winds around the midbrain - cortical branches supply the medial occipital and   medial & inferior temporal cortex
