Our Rotarian of the Day was Lori Bende. She brought the whole clan and was

offering Girl Scout Cookies at a friends and family discount of: retail price. Still worth it. They’ll be back next week, so get your Thin Mints here! On a more somber note, Debbie Galgut passed away. We are sorry to see her go, but are glad to have had her in our lives. Marty Rosenstein was, unfortunately, unable to continue on as President Elect for 2016-2017. But the Club has gotten very lucky in that Antonio Grillo-Lopez has agreed to serve as Club President for 2016-2017! Pete Griffith moved that Antonio be so elected. Dory Beatrice seconded that motion. And Antonio Grillo-Lopez was so elected by unanimous voice vote and standing ovation! Erik Mjoen brought his whole clan of unruly Vikings so that his youngest daughter could be presented with her red badge.

Fary Moini presented us with a banner from the Guney Rotary Club in Turkey after returning from her most recent trip to Afghanistan. Ron Kohl presented, Paul Harris Fellowships to Anna Sample, who only recently joined the club but has gotten off to a great start! Ron also told us that 75% of club has contributed to Rotary Foundation this year. If you are one of the 25% who hasn’t, come on down! Alex Monroe asked us to remember the fundraiser April 23 from 12:30pm to 5:30pm. You can buy 5 tickets ($150 total) or bring in a corporate sponsorship (min $500, but that’s actually less because it’s somebody else’s money!) Remember that the target audience for the sponsorships is service oriented companies, people you see regularly (Bank, hairstylist, restaurants, etc.) Alex even gave us a sponsorship packet with a script to follow. It’s super easy: “We’re advertising the event so it makes a sponsorship worthwhile!” Linda Stouffer and Dennis

Jacobs announced the road rally. There were people with curly hair, and now they don’t have curly hair anymore but Denny is still bald. It was very confusing. Something something Road Rally. Lisa Galstian announced we will have a wine raffle next week from the private reserve of Eric Freeberg. “Friends don’t let friend’s wine alone.” Our Speaker was Marty Martins, who is a former prosecutor who looks exactly like you’d think a former prosecutor would look. He told a lot of great stories debunking Hollywood myths about law enforcement. But for the minutes we’ll condense it down to the five phrases you actually need to know:

-“I have nothing to say.”-“Am I free to go?”-“No, I do not consent to a search.”-“I will not take the breathalyzer.”-“I want a lawyer.”

Happy Groundhog’s Day!

Jay Hatfield was born Anaheim, California. After spending the first six years of his life in Orange County, his family migrated north to Sandy, Oregon, a little town located at the base of Mt. Hood. His formative years were spent living in a log house on the shores of the Sandy River.

Jay earned his Bachelor’s Degree in International Business/Economics at California State University, Stanislaus. He spent a year at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, which gave him the opportunity to travel throughout Europe. He also holds a certificate in Fundraising & Development from UCSD.

In Jay’s early career, he was a Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer, Spa Director and Health & Fitness Manager at several establishments in Southern California. He spent 7 years working at The Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, and served on the Board of the Governor’ Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

He changed careers in 1990 and joined the Braille Institute in Rancho Mirage as the Assistant Regional Director. He became the Regional Director two years later and married his wife of 24 years, Sheila. They have three children: Heather 22, Houston 21, and Hallyn 18. They also have a grandson Caden, who is 3.

Jay & family moved to San Diego in 1998 as a new Braille Institute Center in UTC was being built. He has been a Rotarian for 22 years, joining the Rancho Mirage Rotary Club in 1994 and the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club in 1998. He is a former Board Member and Past President (2007/08) of The Most Dynamic Rotary Club in the World!
