Old San Juan is the oldest part of the city. The streets are cobblestone, and the homes colorful, with wrought iron decorating windows doors and balconies.

Juan Ponce de León was a conquistador from Spain. He travelled With Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the Americas. In 1509 King Ferdinand appointed León governor of Puerto Rico.

Los Taínos were the original inhabitants of Puerto Rico. They were gentle people who were farmers,fisherman, and crafstmen. Their namein their language meant “good.”

This is an elegantly landscaped walkway with trees, statues, benches, street lamps and kiosks. El Paseo is a place to stroll, look at local artists’ work, and listen to musicians. This promenade faces the bay and is part of the city wall.

This is one of six heavywooden doors in the wall.For centuries it would closeat sundown to protect thecity from invaders.

Was built in 1540. Many travelers would go directly here upon entering San Juan to thank God for having had a safe trip. The remains of Juan Ponce de León lie in a tomb in this cathedral.

“La muralla de San Juan” This wall was built in 1635 around old San Juan to protect it. It was completed in 1641.

La Fortaleza was the first fortress on Puerto Rico, begun in 1532. It was originally built to guard against land attacks, but proved to be insufficient. The Fortaleza was turned into the Official Governor’s Residence. It still houses the offices of the Governor today. It is also his home.

This is a six-level fortress! It rises 140 feet above the sea and has a 18-foot- thick wall.It is the largest fortification in the Caribbean!

El Morro is a Spanish fortress built between 1539 and 1787 to protect the city of San Juan from pirates and other invaders. At first it was only a tower, but was later expanded.

Visitors can walk through the rooms or pretend to stand guard in the watchtowers.

This is a castle that was built in 1771 to protect the city and El Morro from land invasions. It is made up of 5 Independent parts so it was not possible for the enemy to capture the castle At one single attack.

Puerto Rican teens enjoy going To parties to listen to music and dance. La bomba y la plena are traditional dances that have African roots.

Instruments used to play this music are tambores (drums), panderetas (a type of tambourine), maracas, and el cuatro (small Spanish guitar).

Pernil – a dish made from roasted pork loin and served with mangos and other fruits.

Guayaba – a tropical fruit, eaten fresh, or as a juice, or even made into a fruit paste.

Tostones – plantains that are sliced, pressed and fried. Eaten as a snack or a side dish.

One of the oldest theaters in the Western Hemisphere. It was built 1832 and remodeled in 1949.

El Yunque is a 28,000 acre rainforest and part of the US National Forest Service. You can visit for a day or do some camping there. In the Yunque, you will see waterfalls, lovely flowers, and many animlas, including the coqui frog and the loro puertorriqueño. (Puerto Rican Parrot)

The Puerto Rican parrot is bright green and about a foot in length. It is only found in Puerto Rico and is an endangered species.
