1. Hello! I´m a Ram Hello! I´m a Ram, I am also ca-lled a goat. My wife is an ewe. We live in a corral in Barcelona in the location where today is the en-trance to La Boqueria market, which it has been for 700 years. A Barcelonan shepherd fed us and we lived happily watching people walk up and down. Occasionally one of us was sold and this would make us extremely sad. The one who had to be sacrificed was taken just a few stops in front of the corral. But don´t be sad. All animals, even humans, need to eat other animals and plants for nutrition. One day there I was, stomach full, in my pen, when with a very weak “crec-crec” the top lifted off. It was a clever goblin who told me that I could make a wish. As gifts like this aren´t given to you very often I thought about it very calmly because it was a hard decision... My mind was made up, I asked to be immortal to watch how Barcelona would grow.

The goblin granted my wish under the condition that I never move from whe-re I was. And here you have me, just outside of the Boqueria market. Can you guess how it got its name? Exactly, it comes from me, from goat (boc). The market got its name from all of us, the rams (bocs) who occupied the space for so long. The truth is that I would never have immagined that I´d become so famous.

With time, the market grew and the farmers came to sell their fruit and vegetables, rabbits, pigs, chickens and cockerels around our corrals. Later, the fishermen were added. Sardines, goldfish, serranos, plaice... The noise and the intensity and va-riety of smells gave style and spirit to the market. At the same time, La Rambla was becoming a more important urban center all of the time. The men who walked up and down all spruced up in very fine clothes demanded that the market disappear from the middle of the street. Because of this it was moved to a plaza that had been the biggest in Bar-celona, but was then occupied by La Boqueria market. It has been there for 170 years since. In little time I made a friend, Pinocchio, who is a doll made of wood in a very famous bar in the market. It seems that there is a waiter who Pinocchio said had a nose that was a little lar-ge. He, instead of worrying about it, laughed and thanked him and now has his whole bar full of pinocchios. The thing that al-most no one knows is that one of the dolls is alive. He is the friend of the waiter I told you about. It gives me much joy that you think that I have been so many years locked away without more company other than the spirits of some illustrious barce-lonans, Monyos, Kubala, Tisner, Rius and Taulet... Pinocchio and I are always together and we always have a go-od time. At night, during no more than one short hour, the Bo-queria is vacant except for us. As you can imagine, we never go hungry.

3. Let´s have a party! Today is Pinocchio´s birthday and we are going to make dinner in the beautiful middle of the market. We want it to be somet-hing different and exquisite; and what better place than la bo-queria to go shopping. We will cook mussels, which are animals who have shells to protect them. There are also mollusks like the cuttlefish who have their shell inside. The octopus doesn´t have a shell. We have forgotten the names of some animals, do you know them???

4. Let´s eat vegetables !

Piocchio and I eat vegetables, which are also very healthy. So-metimes we eat roots (carrots and potatos), leaves (lettuce and endives), stems (asparagus), fruit (strawberries) and fi-nally flowers (artichokes). Vegetables and fruits contain many vitamins!

5. Let´s go to the butcher and deli

We often open up in Pinocchio´s bar and make grilled kid and sometimes we make very good sandwiches of bread and good ham. Match the prepared food with the animal from which it came. Perhaps it makes you feel bad that the animals have to die to feed us, but we need them to grow and make us strong and healthy.
