During your visit to Tyler this summer, did you notice the small groups of people making notes, taking photos and having a spirited debate among the trees? Chances are, you saw the Longwood Graduate Program Fellows. Assessing trees, meeting with senior staff, and walking the property almost weekly, the Fellows were hard at work on their Professional Outreach Project. In early June, it was announced that Tyler Arboretum had been chosen as the site for the Longwood Graduate Program’s 2013 Professional Outreach Project (POP). The Longwood Graduate Program (LGP) is a thesis-driven Fellowship in partnership between the University of Delaware and Longwood Gardens. The Fellows complete the two-year program with a master’s degree in Public Horticulture. In addition to their coursework, Fellows participate in a number of experiential learning projects like this one. Tyler’s own Betsey Ney, recent Director of Public Programs, is a graduate of the acclaimed program. Last spring, in the form of a Request for Proposal, the Longwood Fellows expressed their interest in completing a project that combined public horticulture with history and preservation. “We thought our historic Painter Plant Collection was a perfect match to the students’ interests,” said Tyler’s Executive Director Rick Colbert. As I write this piece, the coolcrisp days of fall are alreadysettling in and I am starting tosee some early fall color. Fall istruly a great time to visit theArboretum and I enjoy theopportunity to observe howplants prepare for winter. There are still things to enjoyin winter. Some plants, such as fall blooming Camellias, continue to bloom intoDecember, while others suchas witch hazels begin bloomingin January.

This year, Tyler has experienced manyachievements. If you visited the Arboretumthis summer, you may have noticed that oursummer camp was very well attended. Infact, for the first time ever, we completelysold out. The popularity of this program hasbeen increasing and we have been verypleased with the feedback from the parentsand children. Members enjoy the benefit ofearly registration for summer camps; if youare interested in registering your child nextyear, I would encourage you to register earlyto ensure your child's participation.

The weather in July and August was verypleasant, and in fact it never even reached90 degrees in August. This extremely mildweather was one of the reasons why attendance was very high during these two months. July was the second highestattendance on record while August attendanceshattered our previous record. Admissionincome exceeded $42,000; the previous

monthly record was just over$30,000. Tyler is increasinglybecoming a regional destination, one of the goals stated in ourStrategic Master Plan.

I am very pleased to sharethat in partnership with SAP,Meyer Design and TurnerConstruction, we are developing plans for a newtree house. Expected to openin spring of 2014, the newtree house will be locatednear the entrance to the

Wister Rhododendron Garden and just offthe Scenic Loop path. Although we are stillin the process of finalizing the plans, it willbe ADA accessible and feature a kid’s clubhouse and some “green elements.” Pleaselook for additional information in the springissue of the newsletter.

On behalf of the entire Arboretum, pleaseallow me to thank you for your continuedmembership support. We truly appreciateyour interest in supporting Tyler! All of thesewonderful improvements and additions cannot be done without your generous contributions. In this spirit of giving, I hopeyou will also consider responding to theAnnual Fund appeal, which provides essentialgeneral operating support. If you are lookingfor a way to donate tax deductible dollars asthe end of the year approaches, I ask you toconsider a contribution to Tyler’s AnnualFund. Thank you for your generosity.

LGP Fellowsthought so too,and selected Tyler’s proposal.

POP is guided bythe LGP Director,Dr. Robert Lyons. He, along withRick Colbert and Longwood Gardens’Library and Information ServicesCoordinator David Sleasman, servedas an advisory committee to oversee andhelp guide the project. Every aspect, from design to implementation, wasexecuted by the ten Graduate Fellows.

Beginning July 1, the studentsembarked on the project in two distinct phases. Phase I consisted ofresearch into the personal documents ofMinshall and Jacob Painter. Recordsdiscovered at local archives indicatedthat the Painter brothers acquiredplants from numerous iconic plantsmenof the day, including John Bartram,America’s first botanist, and SirWilliam Hooker, the first Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, in the United Kingdom.

“Getting to dive in and discover theseinteresting historical relationships has been a one-of-a-kind learningopportunity for my students,”explained Dr. Lyons.

In addition to archival research, PhaseI included a comprehensive treeassessment of the remaining Painter trees. This assessment wasperformed in collaboration withMorris Arboretum’s expert staff.Subsequently, the Fellows completeda report on the status of each tree anda propagation manual for Tyler’sfuture efforts in maintaining thegenetic material from the originalPainter brothers’ plantings. Theseitems, along with digital copies of

Tyler’s priceless glassslides (generouslydigitized by the staffat the LongwoodGardens Library),will be just a few ofthe items deliveredat the completion ofthe project.

“It’s been thrilling to see the vastresources uncovered,”reported Sleasman, who went on tosay, “The opportunities for sharedlearning and collaboration in thisproject are second to none.”

Phase II (still in progress) consists ofdesigning new interpretive materialfor the Painter Plant Collection. Oneof the goals is to give the Collection a

more interactivefeeling.

“We are greatlyanticipating the new interpretation for the PainterPlant Collection,”said Ney. “Thiscollection is theheart of ourarboretum.

There is no better way to engage visitors than to tell the stories of the historic trees at Tyler.”

The project is near completion. Staytuned for the final results of theLongwood Graduate Program’s 2013Professional Outreach Project in afuture issue of Tyler Topics.

After an exciting summerfull of new tree houses, funnew members-only events, and the new Scenic Looppath, Tyler continues to tryto improve our membershipexperience. With the membership changes thatbecame effective July 1,2013, Tyler has instituted anumber of new policies andfeatures to benefit theArboretum and its members.

Tyler has created a newDual membership forhouseholds with two individuals, which hasalready shown great popularity! We also changedthe guest pass policy to aone-year expiration date, andwe ask members to presenttheir identification withtheir membership cards atthe Visitor Center. Perhapsmost notably, memberships atSteward level and above have been further transformed in new andexciting ways to give members theopportunity to share their love ofTyler Arboretum and explore newgardens and museums.

The Steward level membership ($150and above) now includes all membersof the household (up to four adults)living at your address plus two guestseach time the member visits. Stewardand above members will now enjoythe flexibility to bring visiting grandparents for a taste of the localflora, friends for a hike or a child'sfavorite friend for a nature walk or a tree house play-date.

All members still enjoy reciprocitywith the American HorticulturalSociety (AHS) reciprocal program, which includes full reciprocity withWinterthur Museum, Gardens &

Library and weekday reciprocity with Morris Arboretum (buy one/getone free on weekends). When usingyour Tyler membership at anothermuseum or garden, be sure to call theorganization ahead of time before youplan your visit. Some organizationshave certain exclusions, especiallyduring special events.

Steward level and above memberswill also now enjoy the benefits oftwo additional reciprocal programs:North American ReciprocalMuseums (NARM) and ReciprocalOrganization of AssociatedMuseums (ROAM). These tworeciprocal programs provide access toa wide variety of museums, culturalinstitutions, and historic organizationsall over the US and Canada. Particularlyattractive for lovers of art and history, these reciprocal programs will nowencourage Steward members to visit

local treasures like theDelaware Center for theContemporary Arts and theDelaware Art Museum orregional, world-renowned museums like the BaltimoreMuseum of Art, the PhillipsCollection and the HillwoodEstate, Museum & Gardensin Washington, D.C.

With the end of the yearquickly approaching, it isimportant to note that all memberships are tax-deductible, minus thevalue of the guest passesyou receive. But all memberships provide oneother important function –support to Tyler Arboretum.Funding provided by memberships is essential forTyler to fulfill its mission topreserve, develop and share ourdiverse horticultural, historic

and natural site resources in order to stimulate stewardship and an understandingof our living world. Tyler Arboretumthanks all its loyal members for their continued support of our conservation and educational initiatives and we will continue toexplore ways to enhance your membership benefits and experience.
