MOUNT MERAPI: Thedeath toll from Indon-esia’s volcano hasclimbed to nearly 100after another blisteringgas cloud ripped througha mountainside village.
At least 54 people werekilled and dozensinjured yesterday whenthe Mount Merapivolcano erupted again,with scores more suffer-ing severe burns andbreathing problems,officials said.
‘‘The number of deadbodies we have receivedis 54,’’ said Banu Herm-awan, a spokesman forSarjito general hospitalin Yogyakarta, south ofthe volcano.
‘‘The evacuation pro-cess is still ongoing now.We’re afraid there’ll bemore deaths as some lo-cations are still inaccess-ible due to hot ash andvolcanic material.’’
