“ANTIBIOTICS!” ife at . . . “Dignity In Life” L December 2017 One very important medical change that is occurring is the national effort to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics by using them only for their intended uses and only when necessary. This is called antibiotic stewardship. Does this mean that a resident with an infection won’t get treated with antibiotics? Actu- ally, it means that use of antibiotics will be carefully considered. The goal of an- tibiotic stewardship is to make sure the right drug is given at the right time for the right reason. Quick action is taken to address serious bacterial infections, guided by the resident’s needs and test results. However, reducing incorrect or unnecessary antibiotic use is also key to protecting residents from antiobic-related harms, like C. difficle. Frequent or excessive use of antiobiot- ics leads to developing bacteria that are resistnat to those antibiotics. Antibiotic- resistant bacteria are harder to kill, and can cause untreatable infections. Heritage Crossings, like many health care organi- zations, are committing to make sure your loved ones are receiving the right dose, of the right antibiotic, for the right amount of time; and only when antibiotics are truly necessary. With leadership commitment, we will identify champions that will oversee and promote antibiotic stewardship. We will engage the drug expertise from our Physicians and Pharmacists and develop actions to improve the way antibiotics are used in our facility. This will require ongo- ing tracking and reporting. We will focus on education to the healthcare providers, nursing staff, residents and families. So, here is what YOU can do to help with this important change. protect yourself by getting vaccines for the fly and pneumonia and encourage others around you to do the same. Avoid visiting when you feel ill to protect the residents from germs which may be spread in the community. Wash your hands to stay healthy and make sure you are covering your cough and sneezes! Christmas List For ResidentsWe know it is diffi cult to buy gi s for your loved ones, due to limited space

and not many needs, but here are some sugges ons that have worked well in

the past:

Beauty Shop Gift Certificate • Subscriptions to Newspaper or

Magazines • Stationery or Cards with postage stamps enclosed •

Bouquets of fresh flowers • Puzzles or Puzzle Books • Clothing that

they might need • Bird orSquirrel feeders.

(Call the facility for specifi c sugges ons for individual residents)

One of the favorite foods of our residents is kolaches. The residents requested that we have them more often, so one fi ne day, we made them ourselves as a Let’s Cook Activity. The good thing is that everyone got to enjoy the delicious product for afternoon coffee.
