25th June, 2015 Jose Luis Lillo Aleman Reference letter Tonkin Liu is a studio based in London, with projects in architecture, art, and landscape. My partner Mike Tonkin and I are both qualified RIBA architects. We are also teachers, having in the last ten years conducted M Arch studios at the University of Westminster, London Metropolitan University, AA School of Architecture, and University of Bath. Jose joined us from April of 2015. When we interviewed him in March, we were impressed with the beautiful drawings in Jose’s portfolio, the quality of his work indicated a balance of rationality and creativity, combined with a fine sense of artistry. At the time we had been shortlisted for an exhibition design project in China, and were working very hard to develop our proposal for the final presentation. We were pleased that Jose was able to join us and help us with this intense competition. Jose’s input on the exhibition design helped make it clear and systematic, and he produced the set of final presentation drawings. After this project was completed, we asked Jose to work on a marina project for Abu Dhabi, for a client based in Spain. This prestigious project had come through a talented Spanish architect who had worked for us for many years and who had, since leaving our studio, worked at other practices around the world and is now the architect for the Municipality at Abu Dhabi. We asked Jose to accompany us to the site visit to Peurto Banus in Spain, and to document the spatial typologies and psychologies that contribute to the success of this Marina. Jose’s observations and documentations were thoughtful and analytical. Being a small studio our workflow is continually fluctuating. Having not won the exhibition project, and with a few projects put on hold, we are sorry that we are unable to keep him on. In the time that he’s been with us, Jose has helped with producing drawings for a master-planning and landscape strategy for a hospital complex in Somerset. In the Abu Dhabi Marina project, Jose worked in a team to conduct research on precedents, compile a report on the analysis of the workings of marinas, and has been taking part in the brainstorming design sessions. In addition, Jose has been working closely with a colleague, Sebastian, to develop the design both at the macro and the micro scales. Jose is proficient in Rhino, and has learned Vectorworks here. He has also been open to using plasticine and paper, to conceptualizing early ideas for a project. I trust that the intensity, fluidity, and variety of all of the projects and process Jose has taken part in in our studio have helped build his design experience. Ness Point is a place known for its sharp cliffs. These cliff lines are taken as an inspiration to design a particular house in an outstanding location, using the house as part of the lands-cape, where the design lines are overlapsing with the cliffs. As a result, the house becomes part of the cliff. The geometry generates a spacial complexity that is along the two floors of the house. The natural light integration is also an important element of design, using both facade and rooftop lightning systems.

The plot where the Nobel Centre will be held is sorrounded by three different rea-lities which are crucial for the design of the project. This particular location is in contact with the urban orthogonal structure, compact and massive; a park, that will be redesigned, and the sea, which is the principal characteristic of the city of Stockholm.As a result of the study of the place, an extensive architecture is projected, res-ponding in a different way to the three different realities mentioned above, and going into the water redefining the coastline, being the architecture part of it.The nature of the project makes the roof a very important part of it, treated as the 5th facade, the principal one. A pixelated kit of parts is used to configure a dynamic and sophitiscated system. And as an end, in an outstanding place, the farthest into the sea, the auditorium which purpose is to held the Nobel Prize Ce-remony, and a traslucent tower as the lightouse of the city.

Colour Stroll has been conceived as the concept for the Musgrove Park Hospitallandscape, which has three main characteristics: Colour gardens, Choreogra-phed routes, and Surprise Encounters.Colour Gardens are used to reinforce memory and the sense of place, being in Musgrove Park, and being in Somerset. Colours on the Musgrove Park Hospital Map guide help visitors navigate through the different buildings and areas. Simi-larly, the different colours of NHS staff uniforms communicate their roles to the visitors. We propose that the colour codes on the current hospital map are used to create the planting zones. This will not only accentuate the difference between the zones but also reinforce the visitors’ mind map of the hospital. Each zone takes on a stronger identity of its own, through colours and through seasonal interests.Choreographed Routes are identified and reinforced, and will be lined with delica-te light posts with the colour of the zone. The primary route has been identified as the one that connects to the hub, and forms a central North-South walk through the different buildings and zones. The majority of the journeys undertaken are a function of getting from A to B. We propose to create a variety of lengths within a legible framework, encouraging people to make greater use of the landscape as a place of exercise, rest, contemplation. Quantified stroll lengths equate to health benefit, perhaps exercise targets, for patients who are staying longer.Department colour mapSurprise Encounters are encountered as a variety of coloured structures with the colour themed gardens. Being vertical they will be visible from a distance. De-pending on the needs of each area these structures may be armature for plants, bike sheds, or pergolas. They help to give the area a specific focal point and act as place makers to give each garden a memorable character

A mat-building is a large-scale, high-density structure organised on the basis of an accurately modulated grid. A first look at any mat-building geometry shows a ground plan in the form of a regular grid that constitutes the general order.In this occasion, this basic unit consists on a square, a rectangle created by the joint of two of the squares mentioned above, and the lines that close the polygon by joining both units. Then, this modular unit configures the space, articulating a flexible space, with a very complex richness of functions, acording to the program.

The study of the topography of the place was taken as an opportunity to create a project that is sensible with the landscape where it is posed. DIfferent layers of activity are created, which are in constant movement and overlapse, creating a continuous circulation , as if it were a Moebius Band. As a result, three cracked levels are developed as containers of different parts of the program. There is also a facade pattern developed in terms of avoiding the interpretation of the scale of the project.

The application of a pattern in order to divide and structurate is a landscape te-chnology where the creation of conditions is more important than getting results. After studying the patterns in the different landscapes of Castilla La Mancha, the creation of narrow and perpendicular to the river plots is the model selected, dis-posed in the maximun gradient lines. As a system, a 12 metres wide plot has been chosen. These plots can be purchased, extended and combined by the different potential owners. These documents are shown as a brief that belongs to a national competition.

Infrastructure is defined as a group of elements or services that are considered necessary for the creation and use of any kind of organization. In these terms, the old Battersea Power Station is considered as a container of an infrastructural system consisting of an spatial matrix generating activities. The infrastructure, as Kevin Lynch refered, takes centre stage; is shown, it’s used as a gallery. The void, is turned into a liquid space and usable space.
