Staying SafeThe Red River is a large and powerful waterway. Always use caution when wearing waders and stepping into the river. Near the St. Andrews Lock and Dam in Lockport, be aware of turbulent waters, strong undercurrents and rapidly changing water levels.

Fishing GuidesTo find out where the fish are really biting, consider hiring a fishing guide for a day trip. The stretch of the Red River between Lockport and Selkirk is world famous for producing huge catfish providing anglers with adrenaline rushes cast after cast.
Invasive SpeciesThese unwanted, non-native species threaten fish, wildlife and waterways. They’re extremely difficult to control and eliminate. Zebra mussels are a big threat to Manitoba’s waters. Prevent the spread by removing all plants, animals and mud from your boat and then rinsing it using high pressure. Drain all the water and dry your craft for several days. Be sure to dispose of leftover bait in the garbage.
Head north of Winnipeg for about 15 minutes and let the
fishing begin! Join the anglers along the shoreline where you’ll
pluck out walleye/pickerel, sauger, yellow perch and freshwater drum.
But really, this iscatfish country.
Big channel catfish country!

Where to FishAlong River Road South, you can fish from several serviced sites along the shoreline. The east and west sides of the Red River just north of massive St. Andrews Lock and Dam have always been the most popular spots to cast a line. Selkirk Park and Manitoba Hydro Park also provide excellent angling. Further north, Netley Creek offers angling opportunities where the creek spills into the river.
Catch and ReleaseThe health of Manitoba’s fisheries has a lot to do with the way anglers treat them. Catch and release has long been a common conservation practice that contributes to excellent fishing year after year. Handle fish as little as possible, don’t squeeze their bellies and avoid the eyes and gills. Take your photographs and return them to the water as quickly as possible.
Ice FishingThe Red River is just as vibrant in winter as it is in summer. The walleye fishery dominates the hard water season. Ice fishing shacks abound for serious anglers. A sunny winter day on the river can become a favourite new activity. Several outfitters in the area provide all the transportation and gear necessary for a day on the ice.
Licences & RegulationsMost anglers between the ages of 16 and 64 need a fishing licence in Manitoba. Seniors (65 and older) are eligible for a free licence. Status Indians don’t need a licence to fish in the province. Please see the Manitoba Anglers’ Guide (download at gov.mb.ca/water stewardship/fish) for exemptions, daily limits and fees.
Good EatingThe most common species to grace dinner plates are walleye, sauger and yellow perch. But all the species in the Red River are safe to eat. Please keep only what you plan to eat. Otherwise, practice catch and release. If you clean your fish on the shoreline, be sure to use the garbage cans provided.
