The Chimes MEETINGS! WHAT’S “NEWS” IN THE WORLD
There is a lot of talk about news these days. Such as “fake” news,
news channels that only voice opinions and pick and choose what is rele-
vant. Most dictionaries agree that the word, “NEWS” has two primary
meanings. First, “news” can refer to anything that is simply new infor-
mation. This can include the most recent action of our Government to a
“handlebar’ moustache recently grown at the University of Southern Cali-
fornia by a sophomore – who happened to be a girl.
What makes something merit special attention? Who decides? It
seems to me that a lot of the time it depends if you are liberal or conserva-
tive, male or female, what shade of skin you have, or if you are Christian,
Muslim, or other. Who decides?
These are extremely difficult questions, and my empathy is for any-
one who is actually trying to be honest, fair, and truthful without making
us all endure their “righteous” opinions.
I just want to make a theological observation on the whole enter-
prise of our news media. It is this: WHAT MAKES THE HEAD-LINES IN HEAVEN IS PROBABLY VERY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT MAKES THE HEADLINES ON EARTH.
God influences the world’s headlines in the same manner He al-
ways has. He simply bypasses the official channels of the world. He ignores
them all because, as usual, those who are in the know, know nothing;
those who are in, are out; and those who are first, are last.
If the world has anything to do with what God is doing, it is always
inadvertent and unwilling. Think of the events surrounding the birth of
Jesus and you will get what I mean. Richard Neuhaus coined a phrase

that has stuck with me: “God’s truth is found in the cracks, not on the well-travelled pave-
ment of history.”
God is found in the unexpected, not the obvious. God is only seen by those who will
look, heard only by those who will listen with all of their hearts, found only by those who
seek.
I have a suspicion that at the GREAT Awards Banquet in heaven, we will probably be
hearing as much, if not more, about a Sunday School teacher in Wisconsin than maybe Bil-
ly Graham – which is not meant to take away from the many people who Billy helped into
the Kingdom. What I mean is that God’s priorities sit in judgment over all of our notions
of everything, including our idea of what is news.
This is a newsletter, and I guess it is written by a news writer of sorts. So it is humbly
submitted between what I consider news and what God considers news.
(Have you heard the news – Jesus showed up at the Great Banquets and changed lives
since we last talked!)
See you in church. . . . Jack
