Technology’s Role
Transportation Cabinet
Present an overview of the cabinet’s business objectives and mission, and how technology is used to achieve its goals. A few IT systems are denoted.
Transportation’s Charge
The Cabinet is responsible for maintaining and improving the delivery of transportation services in the Commonwealth. All modes are addressed by the Cabinet.
Established in 1912 as the Department of Highways, legislative actions have expanded and renamed the Cabinet to include Motor Transportation, Aeronautics plus selected other transportation Public Safety and Revenue functions.

KENTUCKY’S ROADS CARRY: 85% of all traffic on 27,400 miles of state maintained roads An average of 42,970 vehicles per day on the Interstates; 25% of all travel An average of 9,500 vehicles per day on the Parkways; 4% all traffic Public transportation systems carries 27M passengers each year
DID YOU KNOW – Vehicle travel has increased by 32% on KY’s highways, and 41% on KY’s Interstates in last decade Constructing a highway takes an average of 8 yrs. from design to completion 17M vehicles (about 34M visitors) pass thru KY’s 28 rest areas & welcome centers each year 5M tons of blacktop rehabilitate KY’s highways each year Constructing 1 mile of highway costs approx. $4M; resurfacing 1 mile costs $50K.

Approximately 5,300 personnel working in 12 district offices and the central office share the responsibility for designing, building, maintaining and operating the transportation infrastructure and licensing processes in Kentucky.
