Daggafontein

An Informal settlement of 15,000 people, we think, on the outskirts of Springs, 30 miles east of Johannesburg. 11 languages are spoken - Zulu primarily.

Aids/HIV, alcoholism, prostitution, and domestic and sexual violence are rife.

There is no electricity or sanitation, and only 5 water stand pipes. Nor are there any schools, pre-schools or health facilities.

Kwasa

A South African non-profit social enterprise, led by Sharron Dinnie, established to provide education for the children of Daggafontein.

Started as a pre-school in 2002, the recent purchase of a 20 hectare derelict gold mining site has made possible the expansion into Primary and ultimately High School education. Currently on-roll 138 pre-school and Grade 1 Primary students.

The vision - 2026

Quality education for Daggafontein’s young people enabling them to reverse the cycle of poverty in which they live.

By 2026, a 1,200 pupil 3-18yr independent ‘low fee’ Anglican college.

• Enrolment of the first 22 Grade 1 (5-6yr olds) students in January 2014, complete with new uniforms, and the engagement of Mrs Finke as the new Grade 1 teacher.

• Approval by the Department for Education for Kwasa to operate as independent diocesan school; and approval by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipal Council that it will fund 60% of the teacher salary budget, 2 years in arrears, from 2016.

• Upgrading the electricity power supply to the site.

• Relocation of the squatter families from the large retail ‘White’ building at the entrance to the school site (below left), in readiness for conversion (eventually) into the school hall, sports hall, media suite, clinic and offices.

2015 - the year ahead Newly qualified Grade 1 teacher, Miss Minnaar, starts in January 2015. Mrs Finke will move up to teach the Grade 2’s.

Funds have been raised for the construction of two new classrooms and an ablution block. Foundation work has started (albeit halted temporarily for ground stability and Dolomite testing). We are still awaiting confirmation of the rezoning of the land from mining to educational by the Council. Notwithstanding theses delays, completion is expected Q2/3 2015, ready for Grade 1 and 2 occupation in January 2015 (see below).

Funding Kwasa - capital and revenue costs

For the pre-school alone, 7 staff, a minibus and running costs, the annual spend is @£50,000.

Kwasa has also historically sponsored the (state) school fees for 15 pre-school children each year to progress through primary and high school in Springs at a further annual cost of £50,000. (This will, over time, wind down as the Grade 0 pre-school children from this year move up to become Kwasa Grade 1).

Each new module of 2 classrooms costs £70,000 to build and equip, and a further £20,000 annually to staff with qualified teachers.

Kwasa’s revenue costs are supported financially by communities in South Africa, USA, Dubai, Eire and the UK.

Ultimately, the college will be sustainable through state funding, school fees and local business sponsorship. Until that time, all support is really appreciated!

Ekhurhuleni council has no capital budget for school building. West Green charity has undertaken to source and supply the funds for the new classrooms over the next 11 years. SA funding sources are being pursued for other necessary capital and equipment spend.

A grant application for additional funds from a US foundation has also been successful, enabling work to commence on a third new classroom, also in 2015.

The new classrooms will mean, finally, the removal of the last two shipping container classrooms from the pre-school.

A water borehole will be sunk to reduce water bills.

Phase 1 of the White Building refurbishment/renovation will start, re-roofing the 2,000 sq.m space and creating a walk in clinic, waiting area and treatment room (below, marked blue).
