MissionThe Kankakee Valley Park District exists to acquire, develop, and maintain parks, promote the conservation of natural and historical resources, and provide recreational facilities, programs and services for the benefit of all District residents. The ability to accomplish our mission is made possible through the dedicated efforts of commissioners and staff, the generosity of area residents, a combination of tax dollars, fees, private donations and grants, and by working cooperatively with other governmental and private entities.

Park District Board MeetingsMeetings are held the fourth Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the Bird Park Meeting Room located at 893 W. Station St., Kankakee. Residents are invited to attend to make suggestions or comments to help us improve the programs and facilities we offer.

Kankakee Valley Park FoundationThe Kankakee Valley Park Foundation is organized and operated exclusively for educational, civic and charitable purposes. The Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life in the Kankakee area by assisting in the preservation of open space and enhancing recreation facilities and programs in Kankakee for people of all ages to enjoy.

Program/Class DeadlinesPlease try to register early for classes to ensure the success of a program. For most programs, a decision will be made 3 days before a class is scheduled to begin. Registering at the last minute may mean that the program has already been can-celled. If you miss a deadline, please call (815) 939-1311 to see if there has been an extension.

Dog OwnersWe ask that you follow park and city ordinances. Please keep your pets on a leash at all times and clean up after them. For information on River Run Dog Park see page 27. Thank you for your cooperation.

Grills in our ParksGroups are allowed to bring grills out to any Park District park. If you bring a charcoal grill, we ask that you take the used charcoal with you and dispose of it on your own. Please do not leave it on the ground or place it any garbage can on site.

Lost and FoundItems left at Park District programs or events will be kept at the Park District Adminis-trative Office. Items can be retrieved during regular business hours. Items will be kept for 30 days and then donated.

Gift CardsGive a gift of recreation! Gift cards are good for any Park District program, includ-ing bus trips and sports leagues. Gift cards may be purchased at our Administra-tive Office located at 893 W. Station St., Kankakee or at the RecCenter located at 150 N. Indiana Ave., Kankakee.

NSF ChecksA $50 service charge will be assessed on all checks returned due to insufficient funds.

Refund Policy1. Full refunds will be issued for any program canceled by the Park District.2. Filling out a refund request does not guarantee a refund. 3. Participants may request refunds for programs up to three business days before

the program’s first meeting. In athletic programs and leagues, the program is considered to begin with its first practice.

4. Refunds will be issued via check 7-21 business days once approved. 5. Refunds for trips and contractual programs will only be issued if the spot can be

filled from the waiting list. A full refund policy can be found on our website at www.kvpd.com

Severe Weather PolicyPrograms and Splash Valley Aquatic Park may be cancelled due to severe weather. Decisions about canceling an event will be made at least one hour before the scheduled start time. If an activity is interrupted by severe weather, a supervisor will stay with the participants until the weather has passed, or the participants have been picked up by a parent/guardian. Each facility and event has a weather line that can be reached by calling (815) 939-1311, and following the automated attendant instructions.

Instructor Positions/Program IdeasThe Kankakee Valley Park District is expanding our educational and recreational programs. If you have a particular skill, have an idea for a new program, or are qualified to teach various recreational or educational classes, please call (815) 929-1885 ext. 303.

Publicity PhotosThe Kankakee Valley Park District takes pictures at its parks, programs and special events for publicity purposes. Please be aware while visiting parks or attending Park District programs, pictures of you and your family may be taken and used for publicity purposes without notification or compensation.

Get Your Picture I.D. at the New RecCenter. . . Whether you need a Dog Park pass or a Splash Valley pass, you now get them at the new RecCenter located at 150 N. Indiana Ave., Kankakee, IL 60901. The number there is 815.929.1885 and they will get you set up. Once Splash Valley opens you may also get your Splash passes there. If you have your Season Pass from last year, you can simply renew it at any office, no need for us to print a new card.

Message from the KVPD Director Pardon our excitement, but we’re still celebrating the KVPD’s 90th Anniversary and as of Nov. 1, 2015 the KVPD has been awarded accreditation for the first time in park history. As we get into full winter mode, there’s still time to enjoy the last few weeks of 2015, while preparing for an exciting new year. Our 5th Annual Holiday Lights Spectacular continues each Friday thru Sunday, until December 20, and closes out another fantastic year that included: two Kids Trout Fishing Days, our biggest BBQ Fest to date, MMA fights at our RecCenter, a new Haunted Trail/Village for adults and children, ice fishing at Bird’s Park Quarry, and a nationally sanctioned skating competition and Division I hockey at Ice Valley Centre Ice Arena.

Next year will be no exception, as we work to offer services, programs, parks, and facilities that enhance the quality of life for our residents and visitors.

Don’t hibernate. Come on out and enjoy the outdoors. Our 37 parks offer opportunities for sledding, cross-country skiing, hiking, ice fishing, and more. Don’t miss our Annual Outdoor Show, February 27, that is sure to get you excited for spring and summer.

Mark your calendar for BBQ Fest 2016, July 14, 15, 16. Plan a camping stay at our improved campground, book a softball tournament, at our award winning softball complex or enter one of our 5K/2K run and walks, or just enjoy the beautiful Kankakee River that runs along 11 of our parks.

Building and Pavilion RentalsThe Kankakee Valley Park District has buildings and pavilions for rent. Our facilities can accommodate groups of any size; whether you are hosting a birthday party, family gathering, class reunion, wedding reception, bridal/baby shower, or school function, we have the perfect place for you. Boat Slip Rentals at Beckman Boat HarborRegistration for new renters opens May 1st!

Enjoy the beautiful, scenic Kankakee River without the hassle of moving your boat around all summer. Kankakee’s spacious Beckman Boat Harbor can accommodate boats up to 26 feet long. Each slip rental includes two parking passes (exclusively for the slip renter). The harbor is fenced-in and each renter receives their very own key to the locked gate. Proof of boat registration and insurance is required at time of rental. Space is limited, so hurry in today! Residency is determined by boat reg-istration. Lincoln Park Zoo Lincoln Park Zoo is a world of wildlife in the shadow of skyscrap-ers. Located within a verdant park just minutes north of Chicago, the zoo has been a natural, free oasis for generations of animal lovers. The bus drops us off near the zoo, then the day is yours to enjoy. The trip departs from and returns to the Quarry building at Bird Park. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Canyon Country Experience America’s Canyon Country on a trip that combines the destination’s stunning vistas, unique forests, incredible topography, and bright colors. Kankakee Valley Park District is organizing a special trip, Canyon Country, with the longest-standing U.S. tour operator Collette. The trip is in honor of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. Canyon Country offers an unforgettable tour of Arizona, Utah, and Nevada departing on October 6, 2016 for 9 days, for $2,999. The tour features stops at three national parks: Grand Canyon, Bryce, and Zion. You will be able to experience the spectacular views of Lake Powell, the wonders of Kaibab National Forest, the stark beauty of Monument Valley, and the bright lights of Las Vegas. You’ll also have the wonderful opportunity to experience a delicious chili cook-off, Navajo culture, breathtaking landscapes, and awe-inspiring vistas. Shipshewana Flea Market The Kankakee Valley Park District is happy to be returning to the Shipshewana Flea Market. Shop “till you drop” is more than just a saying in Shipshewana! If hunting for treasures through the 1,000 plus Flea Market vendors is not enough to make you drop, you can walk across the street to the Trading Place Antique Gallery, or walk the short distance to the wide variety of shops downtown. Tai Chi In-a-ChairDeveloped with the input and guidance of medical specialists, yoga teachers and Tai Chi teachers, this therapeutic routine features gentle stretching, moderate movement, and healthful breathing. Taekwondo for Tiny TigersDo you want to do something great for your children? Learning the Korean martial art form known as Songahm will help your child develop discipline, confidence, concentration, and self-control, all qualities that are important to a child’s growth. Kids have a private day of fishing in KVPD’s Bird Park Quarry stocked with trout

one week before the event by Illinois Department of Natural Resources. All fish are

catch and keep. The NIAA measures and records each catch. Prizes are awarded for the biggest catch by a girl and a boy. Bait will be provided. Participants should bring

their own gear. Some poles may be available for loan. Refreshments will be served.

River Road Run. Join us for a community tradition this

spring! Race day is Saturday, March 27 at 9 a.m.

Participants can enjoy a 5K Run and 5K Walk through

Dog Park PermitsApplicants may register up to three dogs. Permits are valid for one year from the date of purchase. Owners must bring record of vaccinations and rabies shots when registering.Dog Park UsageOnce a dog park permit is purchased, members can use the dog park year-round during park hours. KVPD CAMPGROUNDThe Kankakee Valley Park District Campground offers 14 RV sites, to accommodate any size RV, and 13 sites for tent camping with a common dump station and water area. All RV sites have a 30-amp electric hookup, picnic table, and fire ring with grill, and are handicap accessible. Maximum two vehicles per site are allowed in the campground. RVs are allowed one RV and one additional vehicle. A new wilderness walking path has been added to allow campers to walk from the campground through the wilderness to the Kankakee River.

Little Blades 1-3 Students need a USFS Membership.

This unique and fun-filled class teaches the fundamentals of skating to children ages 4-5 years. Each week, skaters will learn basic balance and skating skills in a themed environment, including a Frozen week, Tot Olympics, and Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration! Skaters will develop the coordination and strength necessary to maneuver on the ice independently, while incorporating age-appropriate on-ice activities. Learning to skate is easy and fun! Our classes are designed to keep students excited about learning

from their very first class until they have reached their goals.The Learn to Skate program at Ice Valley Centre Ice Arena offers ice skating classes for the beginner, intermediate and advance skater,

in both hockey and figure skating. From age 4 through adult, there is something for everyone! The program begins by introducing the fundamentals of ice skating. As skaters progress through the levels, more advanced skills are introduced, allowing skaters to specialize in an area of skating: free skating, dance, pairs and synchronized. Our instructors strictly adhere to the standards set

Fundamentals of Ice Skating (Basic and Freeskate Levels) Students need a USFS Membership.

This U.S. Figure Skating program introduces the fundamental moves of ice skating and serves both the recreational and competitive skater. Our curriculum keeps skaters enthusiastic about learning, from the time they begin lessons, until the time they reach their goals. Upon completion of the Basic Levels, skaters will have a grasp on the sport, enabling them to advance to the more specialized area of skating: free skating, dance, pairs, and synchronized. Off Ice Boot CampOorah! Did you know off ice classes provide skaters the opportunity to improve upon additional aspects of skating: strength/core training and body awareness? Adult Hockey LeagueReady to hit the ice again and show the other teams your moves? Ice Valley’s adult hockey league plays on Wednesday nights with each team playing ten regular season games, followed by a single elimination playoff that determines the champions. Get your team together, gear up and get ready to hit the ice. New to hockey and can’t find a team? Play on the KVPD drop-in team to get in on the action. All players must be a minimum of 18 years of age, and all players must register with USA Hockey in order to participate ($53 fee involved with the registration, does not go towards team registra-tion).
