Dialoguewith CEO

After spending the Eid and summer holidays, I bid you to recuperate your zeal and vigor through which we can fulfill several achievements for the good of our beloved Kuwait and the oil sector in particular. In fact, we are confronting mammoth challenges on top of which our progress in executing KPC 2030 strategy, the plans which are aimed to augment productivity, develop work systems, cope with the international incessant technological developments, improve personnel’s skills and discover the positive energies of the oil sector’s personnel to harness them appropriately for the public good.Definitely, the non-stop challenges epitomized in developing the oil depots, discovering new oil and gas depots, increasing production as per KPC 2030 strategy and consolidating the international status, which KPC managed to fulfill as an oil producer and exporter, require exerting much effort and harness all available capabilities and experiences to make such goals concrete fact. Certainly, the personnel of the Kuwaiti oil sector realize how KPC is keen on implementing several gargantuan projects aimed to bolster Kuwait’s status internationally as one of the most important oil exporters. Achieving such goals requires reinforcing communication means among the sector’s personnel to keep the spirit of the one family which is one of the distinguished characteristic of our small oil society and the spirits of the Kuwaiti society in general.

Fahad Nouri: Allotting strategic and inclusive plans regarding research and technology tops our priorities

The Research and Development Department is considered one of

the most significant departments at Kuwait Petroleum Corporation

(KPC) thanks to the multiple tasks it undertakes such as allotting

plans, training programs, preparing reports, conducting researches

and studies as well as allotting appropriate solutions in this do-

main.

To learn more about the department and its tasks, KPC Newsletter

interviewed Mr. Fahad Abdulrahman Nouri, Manager of Research

and Development Department.

The interview has been conducted as a question and an answer as

follows:

1- Could you throw light on the nature of your department

which is considered one of the modern departments relatively

in KPC?

Indisputably, the scientific research is considered a substantial char-

acteristic of the modern age and key basis for human knowledge. In

addition, the applied scientific research is major base for achieving

technological development, improving production and quality of

industrial products which help consolidate the status of countries’

economies and development.

In fact, the economic development in any country depends focally

on the ways of harnessing efficiently the scientific and technologi-

cal knowledge in its key sectors including industry.

In this context, it is undeniable that KPC puts the scientific research

and development on top its priorities and Mr. Farouq Al-Zanki,

CEO of KPC, pays special concern for this field thanks to the posi-

tive results fulfilled by the scientific research such as providing ap-

propriate solutions for the technical problems and challenges which

the corporation confronts. Add to this is its capability to discover

new scientific facts that help reinforce the status of KPC and its

subsidiaries among the huge oil companies internationally.

Consequently, a long-term strategy has been geared up in Novem-

ber 2002 to manage and apply the modern technology in

implementing the projects of the scientific research and de-

velopment in all activities of KPC and its subsidiaries. In

addition, a specialized team identified the major challenges

which will be handled in the future and the best way of han-

dling each challenge as per the specialty of the challenge

for the Kuwaiti oil sector and its added value for KPC and

its subsidiaries.

On January 22, 2003, the Supreme Petroleum Council

(SPC) approved the KPC strategic directions for the com-

ing phase. These directions pay special concern for the

field of scientific research, development and technology;

in addition to rehabilitating technical personnel specialized

in this domain. To carry out the first phase of this strategy,

Research and Development Department was established on

January 2, 2005.

2- What are the tasks of the department in general?

The department is in charge of the following tasks:

Allotting strategies and plans regarding research and •

technology on the level of KPC and its subsidiaries.

Coordinating intensively with K-oil companies to •

identify their needs from projects of research, devel-

opment and technology.

Subsidizing the research projects that are executed by •

Page 11: Kuwait News

9

the concerned authorities for the good of KPC and its sub-

sidiaries such as Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research

(KISR) and Kuwait University (KU).

Assessing and following up the approved research projects •

and comparing them to the plans allotted in this domain. In

addition, the department submits periodical reports about

these projects to the higher administration in KPC.

Following up adherently the plan of establishing Kuwait •

International Center for Petroleum Research.

Identifying and assessing the applications of the renewable •

energy resources to meet the needs of the oil sector.

Organizing seminars and workshops to increase the aware-•

ness of the oil sector’s personnel on the importance of the

scientific research and technology.

3- What is the nature of the department’s relation to plan-

ning, guidance and surveillance?

Research and Development Department coordinates incessantly

through technical specialized teams and committees with KPC’s

subsidiaries to allot executive plans to conduct researches in col-

laboration with internal and external research authorities. These

researches help provide the ideal solutions for the challenges

and problems which KPC’s subsidiaries suffer from as these

researches are basically aimed to improve the efficiency of pro-

duction and intensifying the operations of refining and manufac-

turing of petroleum products in Kuwait. “We cannot disregard

here the continuous cooperation with Planning Sector to ensure

that KPC strategy is being carried out properly; therefore, the oil

companies’ performance is periodically assessed.”

4- Could you tell us your future vision and the

mechanism of implementing it?

Oil and gas sector is essential field in any

country; therefore, research collabora-

tion in this field should not stop at the

local level; there should be interna-

tional cooperation with global com-

panies and institutions to benefit from

their experiences and scientific capa-

bilities in handling technical and tech-

nological problems which the oil sector

confronts. In addition, such international

collaboration helps improve the efficiency

of the Kuwaiti personnel in this respect.

The mechanisms which help achieve such fu-

ture vision include what follows:

To recruit the experienced and specialized person-•

9

nel in the field of scientific research and technology.

To establish an independent authority financially and ad-•

ministratively in charge of executing the strategy of scien-

tific research and technology.

To exchange field visit with international research authori-•

ties and endorse common cooperation accords to carry out

research projects serve the oil sector.

To build intensive communication network through bol-•

stering relations with international research centers, uni-

versities and companies specialized in scientific research

and development.

5- What are your most prominent projects in the coming

phase?

Research and Development Department is aimed to implement

several projects as per KPC 2030 strategy on top of these projects

to establish Petroleum Research Center to become basic prop to

execute KPC strategy as regards research and technology field.

It is supposedly in charge of confronting the technical and tech-

nological challenges which the Kuwaiti oil sector faces through

providing appropriate solutions for them; the matter helps fulfill

the operational plans of the sector on the long and middle run.

There is another project is aimed to avail of the resources and

applications of the renewable energy’s techniques to meet part of

the oil sector from energy to partake in preserving consumption

of energy and manage properly the emissions of CO2 and other

gases. This project depends focally on executing a number of so-

lar energy’s applications in the oil sector such as pilot projects to

assess their actual performance technically and economically.

It is noteworthy that KISR carries out this project in co-

ordination with KPC and its subsidiaries. In addi-

tion, KISR is supported technically by a num-

ber of German universities such as Kassel

University.

In the same context Research and De-

velopment Department collaborates

and coordinates with all international

oil companies to carry out the initia-

tives of implementing the research and

development strategy; accordingly, a

specialized team has been formed to fol-

low up the plans allotted in this domain.

Oil Spills

KPC Newsletter team has selected the is-

sue of “oil spills” to spotlight in this issue

of KPC Newsletter due to the negative

influences of the petroleum hydrocarbon

substances on environment. It will also

underline the tremendous efforts exerted

by KPC and its subsidiaries to control

the hazards of these substances on envi-

ronment.

The term of “oil spill” refers to the pro-

cess of leaking, by mistake, petroleum

hydrocarbon liquids in seas and oceans

while transporting them; the matter jeop-

ardizes the marine environment and its

organisms. Accordingly, the concerned

authorities have to hastily intervene to

control such spills and handle any nega-

tive environmental impacts resulted in

this domain.

Contamination with oil distillates can

take place through:

1- Oil refineries and its waste resulted

from the operations of refining oil.

2-Waste resulted from consuming fuel

in gas and thermal power stations which

consume big amounts of fuel; thus, the

amount of waste is huge as it includes oil

and lubricants.

3- The explosions of pipelines, which

are used to transport oil, due to terrorist

activities.

4- Some oil tankers empty the contents

of its waste in water under the absence

of international surveillance.

5- Oil Spill occurs also when any oil

tanker has a collision inside the sea or

it sinks.

6- It is resulted when oil flows during the

operations of drilling in the sunken ar-

eas; in addition, the spill may take place

also when pumping oil to tankers to ex-

port it.

7- Oil spill may take place also due to

exploding any of the pipelines which

may be corroded chemically and thus oil

would be leaked.

8- Some plants which are located near

the sea may also get rid of their petro-

leum industrial waste in the sea; the mat-

ter leads to forming oil dispatches that

endanger the life of sea organisms.

Additionally, some refining labs and sta-

tions of treating crude oil which are lo-

cated near to the beach expose of their

waste through bowling them into water.

Moreover, the oil tankers cleaned in the

sea lead to the same hazard. Oil, natural

gas and petroleum products may vapor

from their containers and cisterns to the

air and then fall in the sea or the river and

lakes with rains.

It is mentioned that millions of tons of

spoiled oil float on oceans; the matter

endangers the lives of fish resource and

birds which feed on fish.

Negative influences of oil spills

Oil spills kill several crustaceans and fuci

as they form a layer above the surface of

water bans oxygen, which is necessary

for their respiration, to reach them. In

addition, they ban the sunrays, which are

necessary for the growth of the botanical

organisms, and jeopardize the sea organ-

isms as well as impede the movement of

birds feed on such organisms.

Pursuant to its social responsibility to preserve environment

KPC sponsors the operation of lifting ship sunk opposite to Al-Beda’ Coast

As per its keenness to bolster the con-

cepts of social responsibility in the

civil society, KPC took part in spon-

soring the initiative launched by the

Kuwaiti Diving Team that is affiliated

to the Environment Voluntary Asso-

ciation to lift a ship sank in the east of

Al-Bea’ Coast.

On his part, Head of Diving Team

Waleed Al-Fadhel thanked and ap-

preciated the authorities took part in

patronizing such initiative specially

KPC which interacted hastily with

the initiative.

He clarified that the ship confronted

hard circumstances of bad weather

that made the ship’s captain lose his

control on the ship. Thus, it sank in

the sea at the depth of 12 meters,

indicating the team preferred to ex-

tricate the ship after the holy month

of Ramadan due to the circumstances

of fasting and the hazards of working

at night. Accordingly, the team has

allotted a successful marine plan to

rescue the ship.

He pointed out that the Diving Team

collaborated with the Coast Guard

General Department and Fire Ser-

vice Directorate represented by Ma-

Page 15: Kuwait News

13

rine Rescue Center. After that, the team

placed day and night navigational signs

to secure the site of the ship to avoid any

marine accidents in the same area. They

also fixed the ship not to move by the

power of wind or rough water currents.

The team after that used a crane whose

power is estimated to 100 tons since the

ship, which was loaded with foodstuffs,

weighs nearly 60 tons.

He further indicated that this rescue op-

eration is considered the first of its kind

for the diving team as they use for the

first time a gigantic crane in the open

sea to lift, through 4 continuous days of

hard work, a ship weighs 60 tons and its

length is 25 meters; whereas the width

is nearly 8 meters.

Some people say that they hate the idea of joining a gym. They see it as being an unpleasant and competitive idea.

Although in reality it is very different. Joining a gym has many positive outcomes in our everyday lives.

Gyms usually provide plenty activities for everyone to enjoy. Swimming pools, for example, serve joy to both children

and adults. Other activities and sports provided by gyms include tennis, squash, football and beach area as well as the

gym itself and regular classes. Many gyms provide an assortment of classes from the harder workouts like step and

aerobics through to Pilates and yoga. Then there may be a beauty salon, masseur, cafe or restaurant, enough amenities

to have an indulgent spa day or a fun family day out.

Certain gyms provide personal trainers to tailor the specific needs of each person. This way, you will be challenged and

motivated to workout harder. Sometimes trainers will provide diet plans to help you maintain or lose the weight.

Exercising regularly is important to our health and ourselves- mainly because it is stress relieving. Allowing time for

a swim before work or at the end of the day can provide an important transition between work and calming the body.

Some people visit the gym after work, before going home. This helps carry any stress and concerns from their day.

They are able to exercise and then go home, looking forward to the evening ahead.

Joining a gym can provide an assembly for our exercise regime, an opportunity to meet new people, take time out for

ourselves and of course a way of easing stress. It can also provide a fun day for the whole family and with our friends.

There are many advantages to joining a gym.

Vegetables and fruits instead of cosmetics!

Scientific researches and studies have proved that

having vegetables and fruits keeps the beauty of the

skin; therefore, physicians advise women to give up

wearing cosmetics and depend on vegetables and

fruits. We will underline briefly some of the most

important vegetables and fruits as follows:

To be energetic and fit

Carrots

It is considered one of the oldest vegetables that man

recognized and ate before realizing its healthy ben-

efits. In addition, it is one of the basic ways of skin

beauty as it is rich with Vitamin A; therefore, having

carrot juice regularly has explicit and positive influ-

ence on the skin’s beauty.

Cucumber

It has numerous healthy benefits which we may not recognize

as it works as styptic for the wide skin; therefore, it is used in

making several skin’s masks to protect it particularly the sen-

sitive skin. Cucumber has obvious influence on whitening the

skin and getting rid of blackheads which appear under the eye.

Cucumber juice is used in summer as a lotion to treat sunburns

and to moisten the skin.

Lettuce

It is used in preparing several cosmetics as it is natural and dis-

tinguished moisturizer that works as an insulator for the skin to

protect it from the sun heat and the influence of wind. It is rich

with several vitamins which are used in preparing nutrients for the

skin and lotions for the face.

Strawberry

It is used in treating the sunburns which girls sustain during

summer in particular; in addition, it is used as a skin moisturiz-

er since poultices made from strawberry juice moisten stagger-

ingly the skin. Moreover, it treats skin’s sloughs and burnings.

Strawberry is used also in making masks for face as it works

as a styptic for skin particularly the oily skin.
