Tania Reis received an NIH R01 grant titled “Mechanisms of fat regulation by conserved anti-obesity genes” with a funding period of 02/01/2017 – 01/31/2022. Congratulations to Tania.

Jane Reusch received a VA Clinical Merit award titled “Clinical Merit “Cardiovascular Mechanisms of Exercise Intolerance in Diabetes and the Role of Sex” with a funding period of 04/01/2017 – 03/31/2021.

Also we would like to acknowledge Amy Keller from the Reusch lab who received a VA Career Development award titled “Repair of Vascular Contractility and Mitochondrial Function by NOS Recoupling” with a funding period of April 2017 – March 2022.

Congratulations to Jane and Amy.

David Saxon received the Health Services Research Development Award from the Department of Medicine focused on the utilization of FDA-approved anti-obesity pharmacotherapies within the VA system. This award has a 2-year funding period. Congratulations to Dave.

We just heard yesterday that Vicki Catenacci’s R01 resubmission application received a score in the 11th percentile. Her grant is titled “Comparison of Weight Loss Induced by Intermittent Fasting Versus Daily Caloric Restriction in Individuals with Obesity: A 1-Year Randomized Trial”. NIDDK is likely funding to the 13th percentile. Congratulations to Vicki.

Sarah Farabi who works with Teri Hernandez, she received the Excellence in Advancing Nursing Science award for her outstanding PhD dissertation by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Congratulations to Sarah.

Also David Saxon and his wife had a baby girl this month, congratulations.

Division Head Updates – the Division Head meeting will be later this month so there are no updates at this time.

Clinician-educator position – There are four candidates; Mahnaz Mellati, Se-Min Kim, Sina Jasim and Palak Choksi. We are looking for a clinical/educator position, not an R01 NIH funded type position to meet the increased need at the clinic. Rather than a few people meet with them, we are trying to get as much exposure as possible. They have given or will give talks as an opportunity for as many people to see them. Sina Jasim will be visiting in the near future. Palak Choksi’s husband decided not to pursue a position offered at the School of Medicine therefore Dr. Choksi will not come for a visit.

UC Health at Highlands Ranch – This outreach clinic is not through University Hospital, this clinic is part of the UC Health system where we are given first opportunity to staff with our own faculty. The salary and productivity expectation will likely be higher at this location. Currently we are putting in our request of what we need to be successful which is a physician and a practice manager. Ideally, we prefer the providers would work 80% in Highlands Ranch and 20% at Anschutz for opportunities for good interactions and connections with the staff on Anschutz campus. This location will probably be staffed in the second quarter of 2018.

There is an ongoing discussion about UPI staffing this location and having it as a hybrid private practice/ academic outreach clinic in an effort to have a stronger relationship with the School of Medicine. The challenge is to have the UC Health outreach clinic providers have an incentive to participate in the academic community at the School of Medicine. Currently we are trying to have a clinical research presence with the intent of having research coordinators working there. There was a suggestion to be proactive by having a social event to stay connected to the providers at outreach clinics.

Anschutz Health and Wellness Director Search – The process for the search for a director has moved to the second phase. Interviews will be held in the next few weeks.

Kate Horwitz – We are having a retirement luncheon for Kate on Friday May 19 from 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM in the Krugman Conference Room (Trivisible). She is officially retiring on June 30, 2017.

DOM Interdisciplinary Research Faculty - Send Bryan names of junior faculty, internal or external, who can bridge new research for these new interdisciplinary positions (late Assistants to Associate Professors, mid-career stage). Significant amount of funds are available for this recruitment.

Administration

PRiSM – complete PRiSM now for faculty evaluations, the deadline for the Division to submit is March 1st. We received a notice from the Department of Medicine that several faculty have not started updating their PRiSM accounts.

Clinical

Aspen Valley Outreach Clinic -Marc Cornier, Cecilia Low Wang, Virginia Sarapura and Irene Schauer are providers at the Aspen Valley Hospital outreach clinic. The monthly clinics began in January 2017. The overall experience has been good so far even though there has been a bit of a learning curve. Thank you to the four providers for doing this.

Patients referred back to Primary Care providers – Please set expectations up front to patients to understand they will be referred back to their primary care providers after the specialist has resolved issue.

Telehealth – Medicaid will reimburse for telehealth consultations next year.

Fellowship

We matched our top 7 fellowship candidates. The 3 new fellows will start in July; Adnin Zaman, MD from USC, Kelsey DeSalvo, MD from University of Colorado, and Elisa Rogowitz, MD from the University of Arizona.

Candidates seem to be looking for stability and opportunities to stay at the institution of their fellowship.

Fellowship Faculty survey – Sarah Mayson will develop an opportunity for faculty development and information to clarify faculty, residents and fellows roles, which will address areas for improvement from the fellowship faculty survey.

IT Services

CrashPlan Service– This is a backup utility installed on your computer that backs up to a secure HIPAA compliant cloud service through an active Internet connection. Over 600 US academic institutions currently use it. It has been approved for all types of data and is MAC and PC compatible. Up to four devices can be backed up with an individual account. Crashplan PROe is a backup client that is installed on laptops and other critical computers to provide a continuous backup to a secure cloud. This protects against data loss due to hard drive failure, ransomware and malyware attacks. Professional data recovery services are extremely expensive (often $1000-$2000 per incident) and are frequently not successful in recovering data.
