WritingWriting is not assessed during SATs week.

It is Teacher Assessed : ‘Working Towards’, ‘Expected’ or ‘Greater Depth’

As teachers, we have to demonstrate which objectives have been met consistently in the child’s writing.

Some examples of these objectives are:•Using modal verbs or adverbs to indicate degrees of possibility.•Using commas to clarify meaning or avoid ambiguity in writing.•Using brackets, dashes or commas to indicate parenthesis.

Page 22: KS2 SATs Parent Meeting - St John's CofE Primary … 6...Aims of the meeting: •To inform you about Year 6 SATs and teacher assessments. •To inform you about how best to support

Once marked, the tests will be given the following scores:o A raw score (the total number of marks achieved for each paper);o A scaled score (which is explained below);o A judgement of whether the National Standard has been met.

After marking each test, the external markers will convert each raw score into a scaled score to show whether each child is working below, at or above the national standard.

When the scaled score is given, it is given in a range from 80 to 120. A scaled score of 100 or more is meeting the national standard.

There are no separate tests for higher achieving pupils. Instead, each test will have scope for higher attaining pupils to show their strengths. This means that there will be some questions on the papers that some children will not be able to do –we ask that they attempt as much as they can. These questions come towards the end of the papers.

What sort of results are reported?

What are the results for?

• To give parents an indication of their child’s attainment against national standards.

• To inform secondary schools.• Monitoring school success.• Guiding the school on how to improve.

Daily RoutineSATs Breakfast.

We recommend ALL children come to the SATs breakfast, even if they have eaten breakfast before. It calms all the pupils down and gets them focused for the morning ahead.

9:15/9:30 SATs begin

Each morning will be different depending on which tests we are doing that day.

Page 26: KS2 SATs Parent Meeting - St John's CofE Primary … 6...Aims of the meeting: •To inform you about Year 6 SATs and teacher assessments. •To inform you about how best to support

Preparing for the tests at home

• Read regularly with your child and discuss their reading.

• We ask that children should be reading every day and marking this in their reading diary.

• Research shows that reading both to an adult, and at home can help the development of listening skills, spelling, reading comprehension and develop vocabulary.

Page 27: KS2 SATs Parent Meeting - St John's CofE Primary … 6...Aims of the meeting: •To inform you about Year 6 SATs and teacher assessments. •To inform you about how best to support

Preparing for the tests at home

• Support your child with their homework –homework timetables were given out in the class letter.

• Help your child to practise their times tables –TT Rockstars.

• Encourage your child to play internet based revision games.

• Help your child to learn their weekly spellings.

Page 28: KS2 SATs Parent Meeting - St John's CofE Primary … 6...Aims of the meeting: •To inform you about Year 6 SATs and teacher assessments. •To inform you about how best to support

During the week

• Try and make home as stress free as possible. Discuss the SATs but don’t over analyse them.

• Get them to bed nice and early! They need to be alert and awake the next day.

• If they are not coming to SATs breakfast for food, make sure they have breakfast before they come to school.

• PE kits for afternoons so they can let off some steam!

SATs focus on what they know about Maths and English They won’t reflect how talented they are at Science, Geography, Art, Music, PE or anything else!

Don’t panicIn reality it’s just one or two papers lasting 30-60 minutes each day. You can’t emphasise enough the importance of keeping that in perspective.

We will do all we can to support your childThe children tend to be fine, it’s the adults that worry!
