1. The Government has introduced legislation that will allow for better integration of nurses within the health care system. By bringing Licensed Practical Nurses and Registered Nurses together into the same bargaining unit, LPNs will be able to play an expanded role in the nursing care team.

2. Nearly 70 per cent of Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) voted by secret ballot to change their union representation from the HEU to the BCNU. We support this change and we support the secret ballot that enabled LPN’s to speak freely without pressure. Freedom of choice is an integral part of democracy.

3. It’s our responsibility to ensure that the wishes of BC’s Licensed Practical Nurses are recognized, as expressed through their recent vote – a process that was certified by the Labour Relations Board of BC.

For many seniors, there are common concerns about life-style as they age. Many wonder how they will manage their own homes in their older years or what kind of personal care they might be able to afford. For seniors on a limited income, these concerns can be especially pressing as lim-ited resources tend to mean fewer options.

Fortunately, a new model of retirement living is helping to alleviate those fears. Retirement living communities across the country are working with provin-cial, federal and local authorities to make seniors of all income lev-els equally welcome in their facil-ities. In Kimberley, Garden View Village has made a commitment to low-income seniors a priority.

Garden View Village is a well-crafted seniors’ community boasting beautiful suites rang-ing from studios to one and two bedroom layouts. These main-tenance-free living suites incor-porate supportive features to pro-mote independence and 24-hour emergency monitoring service for added peace of mind. Kitch-ens include a fridge and stove and each suite is equipped with its own personal heat and air conditioning controls. Beyond the suite is ac-cess to a variety of common areas which include a games room, spa room, library, dining room, cof-

fee room, crafts room, hair salon and lounges. All areas are easily accessible, full of interesting peo-ple, engaging activities and share a wonderful sense of community.

Rents for allotted low income suites start as low as $500 per month at Garden View Village and include weekly housekeeping, a wide selection of recreational and social activities, 24 hour emer-gency monitoring, shuttle bus service, and hot, delicious meals prepared by on-site chefs. Each meal is served by cheerful wait staff in a central dining room, with a cozy fireplace where guests and families are always welcome.

In addition to the hospitality services, residents can enjoy peace of mind knowing they don’t have to worry about extra bills because all utilities including water, sewer, heat, air conditioning and cable are also included.

Garden View Village is within walking distance of the beautiful Cominco Gardens and is a five minute drive to the shops, restau-rants and services in the Platzl, as well as to the town’s medical clin-ic. The region provides many rec-reational opportunities, including award-winning golf courses, beau-tiful nature parks and world-class resorts.

Seniors, stop worrying about your pocketbooks.

The B.C. government and the B.C Medical Association are offer-ing doctors a $100,000 bonus to relocate to se-lected rural communi-ties for three years.

The latest incentive is on top of a program to forgive student debt for doctors who will set up a medical practice out-side urban areas, and other inducements to graduating and foreign doctors to venture out-side large cities.

Health Minister Mar-garet MacDiarmid and BCMA president Dr. Shelley Ross an-nounced the program Wednesday. Both said it was a difficult task picking the most needy locations, and ex-pressed hope that it is successful and can be expanded.

In the Interior Health Authority, Princeton and Clearwater are funded for two general practitioners each, and Nakusp gets one. Cran-brook is funded for one anesthesiologist.

In Northern Health, the fund will be offered for one general prac-titioner each in Burns Lake, Chetwynd, Ha-zelton, Kitimat and Tumbler Ridge. Ques-nel is funded for one internal medicine in-ternist, and Terrace is funded for one anesthe-siologist.

In Vancouver Coastal region, one general practitioner each is funded for Bella Coola and Pemberton.

In the Vancouver Is-land Health Authority, Port Hardy is funded for two general practi-tioners and Port Alberni gets the only emergency physician provided for in the program. Tofino and Galiano Island are funded for one general practitioner each.

MacDiarmid, a fam-ily doctor in Rossland before going into poli-tics, said these won’t be typical office-based medical practices. The GP positions will in-volve hospital and resi-dential care, supported by a relief physician program so doctors can

take some weekends and vacations.

Some involve “out-reach” visits to even more remote communi-ties, including aborigi-nal villages.

The program is fund-ed out of the $10 mil-lion rural recruitment budget agreed to in the latest fee agreement with the BCMA. B.C. spends about $100 mil-lion on these programs, including one to pro-vide continuing medi-cal training for remote doctors.

Ross said some of the communities have had great difficulty keeping doctors, and some have lost all resident phy-sicians at times. The program is open to new graduates, physicians from out of province and qualified foreign doctors.

“We’re short of doc-tors, even in downtown Vancouver,” Ross said.

Eligible doctors will get $50,000 up front and the rest after one year, with repayment required if they don’t stay for three years.

Province offers medical funding

Gregarious Gardener

New in the NurseryIt is an extremely exciting time to be a gardener here

in the East Kootenay and a fabulous time to consider adding some awesome new trees and shrubs to your landscape. This season, 2013, is a remarkable year in that there are so many new introductions available on the market. We have worked hard to make sure that we can bring these fascinating new plants to you, to add to your garden for this year.

Many years you will see introductions of a couple of new plants, well ones that are hardy for our area anyway, but this year is truly special, because there are new fruit trees and shrubs, new hydrangeas, ninebarks, roses, weigela, spirea and even maples. In fact, there are so many introductions, I will need this and next week’s column to fit them all in.

Everyone loves fruiting trees and shrubs, and we are all concerned about not only the cost of food, but more importantly where our food is coming from. We have heard this time and again, and are constantly striving to bring new fruit producing plants to you, so that you can be sure where your food is coming from. Of course, all these plants are locally grown in the East Kootenay.

The fruiting shrubs I am most excited about for this spring are the Black Huckleberry, the Goji Berry and the Navaho Blackberry. Who doesn’t love huckleberry and now everyone can try growing huckleberry in their garden. No more fighting with the bears for the harvest in the bush. This huckleberry will grow in sun or shade conditions and will produce an abundant harvest once it matures in a few years. Be careful not to baby this bush too much as it will actually be happier with less attention.

Unless you have really not been paying attention to health reports recently, you surely have heard about the benefits of the goji berry. The goji berry is high in antioxidants which is said to slow the aging process, boost the immune system, and may even help in lowering cholesterol levels. Sounds pretty fabulous and there are a myriad of ways they can be consumed: fresh, dried, cooked, in teas or juices and wines. This is a nice well mannered shrub that does not need a ton of attention, but I would recommend a sheltered spot for it, as it prefers a little protection from our harsh winters.

The one fruit bush that I am most excited about this year is the Navaho Blackberry. Big deal you may say - we can't grown blackberries reliably in Zone 4 anyway. Now hold on a minute! This blackberry is Zone 4 hardy, so we can grow it in Cranbrook and area and the icing on the cake, it is deer resistant. Yes, deer resistant blackberry and the reports so far are good that the deer are staying away.

Although they are more grown for their spectacular flower display, roses can also supply you with a harvest of rose hips to make tea, syrup and even jam. Rose breeders are not disappointing with this year’s offering of new varieties.

There is ‘Liberty Bell’, a new dark red floribunda rose. What makes it so special is that it is an own-root, meaning it is not grafted and is considered hardier than other floribunda roses.

There are also a couple of new introductions to the Canadian Artist series of roses. These are ‘Bill Reid’, named after the artist who played a pivotal role in the introduction of the great art traditions of the indigenous people of the Northwest Coast to the rest of Canada and the world. Bill Reid is a beautiful yellow rose that at maturity is about 3 feet tall and 2 ½ feet wide, making it a great addition almost anywhere in the garden.

There is also ‘Campfire’, which is named after a stunning painting by Thomas Thomson of the same name. The painting is considered a masterpiece in design and colour, and the rose that bears its name is described as an extremely hardy and low maintenance rose which flowers in smouldering blends of yellows and reds.

There are also a few new Easy Elegance roses this year, including ‘Super Hero’ and ‘All the Rage’. ‘Super Hero’ boasts clusters of perfect hybrid tea shaped red blossoms that stand out against green satiny foliage. ‘All the Rage’, as the suggests really will be all the rage this season with ever-blooming colour from tight coral buds that open to a glowing yellow center with apricot petals. Easy Elegance roses are strong performers with good disease resistance and a proven performance.

Stay tuned next week for a look at the new ornamental shrubs and trees for 2013.

Till next time... happy gardening.Submitted by Tara

Each year, for the past six, Aveda Canada has mobilized its network in an inspiring demonstra-tion of support for clean water rights and access in Africa.

Our key fundraising project includes the 7th annual Walk for Water held across the nation on April 22, 2013. This walk will unite Water Warriors such as myself

from 16 cities nation-wide in a 6 km walk, this is the average distance a young girl or woman in East Africa must walk to access clean water. Through the walk we aim to generate aware-ness to the global water crisis.

The walk gives people a fi rst hand experience about the long distances women have to travel to even reach drinking water. This year will be

my third 6km Walk for Water with the Aveda Institute Calgary, where I attended cosmetol-ogy school in 2011 and 2012.

Last year, our school raised over $10,000 and Canada-wide the cam-paign resulted in over $529,000. Aveda’s life-time contribution has now exceeded $1.8 mil-lion, enough to provide clean water and sanita-tion to 72,000 people!

My personal goal is to raise at least $1,000

through fundraising in our community. I will be giving 10% off any of my clients hair services at The Vanity Room Sa-

lon and Day Spa, Cran-brook, to anyone who donates!

Please contact myself at 250-489-2022 if you

are interested in donat-ing, or to book a hair appointment, or if you would like to join our team and walk please

contact Kelli-Rae Ennis, director of the Aveda institute Calgary at 403-264-5053 ext 4 for more information.

One of the most ob-vious, yet overlooked, sources of cost savings is right in your own home. If you have un-treated hard water, the potential for savings is significant.

When not properly treated with a water softening system, hard water is not only a nui-sance – it’s a drain on your wallet.  On the flip-side, softened water can reveal hidden savings that bring measurable benefits  to your budget.  These include:Detergent savings

Soft water can re-duce detergent use by

as much as 80 per cent. That’s because home-owners do not need to use as much soap or cleaning aids to wash laundry, dishes, hair and body. You save on de-tergent purchases while getting even cleaner re-sults.Lower energy bills

Soft water can de-crease energy costs by up to 34 percent. Con-sumers can now wash their clothes in 60-de-gree versus 100-degree water temperatures, decreasing the energy required to heat water for successful stain re-moval.

Appliance longevity Using softened water

helps to increase the lifespan of your water-using appliances, by preventing scale buildup that can damage equip-ment and lead to pre-mature replacement. In fact, washing machines run with hard water can wear out up to 30 per cent quicker.Water heater efficiency

Gas storage tank household water heaters that run on hard water have as much as a 48 percent  loss of  efficien-cy, whereas those oper-ating on soft water can maintain their original efficiency  rating  over  a 15-year lifetime.Healthier plumbing

Hard water scale buildup not only attacks appliances, but clogs pipes, slows drains and constricts the rate of water  flow  from  show-erheads by up to 75 per cent. Soft water keeps these “lines” open and prevents the need for costly plumbing repairs.

Want to experience soft water savings? Your licensed Culli-gan water professional, Jeremy Randall can conduct a free in-home water analysis to see if you have hard water and offer recommendations.

Across British Colum-bia, 171 recipients will share $7,173,500 in the latest round of grants.

“The Community Connections Society of Southeast BC has provided years of sup-port, placing our com-munity at the forefront of their agenda. I am very pleased to see this dedicated organization receive $40,000, so they can continue to meet the increasing demand on their services,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett.

Recipients in this round of grants include programs for Human and Social Services, Arts and Culture, and Sport.

“Community Connec-tions Society is very grateful to be the re-cipient of a Community Gaming Grant again this year for the Cran-brook Women’s Re-source Centre. We were pleased to also learn that our application for Cranbrook Family Con-nections and the Koote-nay Child Development Centre was supported as well with a grant. These grants will help to ensure sustainability for these vital hubs of services in our commu-nity. We need to say a big thank you to MLA Bill Bennett for his ad-vocacy and support in this regard,” said Gwen Noble, Executive Di-rector, Community Connections Society of Southeast BC.

Community Gam-ing Grants help local groups provide impor-tant services for B.C. families.

Pink Day Success! On Wednesday Feb 27th, Mount Baker students were encouraged to wear

pink to support Anti- Bullying. This day is a nation wide campaign that prevents all forms of bullying. By wearing pink, the students demonstrated their support for diversity and acceptance. In addition, The Kootenay Ice showed their support by selling hockey tickets on March 2, 2013 for $10 to anyone who dressed in pink calling it “Pink the Rink”. The rink was flooded in pink patterns showing respect toward Anti-Bullying campaigns nation wide. Thumbs up to those who took a stand and wore pink on Anti-Bullying day!

Métis Youth Cultural Camp

A SOLID thank-you to everyone that partici-pated in the Métis Youth Cultural Camp,

Feb 27, 28 and March 1st. There were 90 Ab-original students (mainly Métis youth) and 40 Métis Elders! They had historical plays called Koo-koo-shint, had workshops called Sash Fin-ger Weaving, Métis Beading, Employment and Training, La Barouche, Impact of Residential School, Métis Jigging and Music, Métis in the Arts and Michif Language. They also enjoyed a delicious Traditional Métis Dinner. The experi-ence was engaging and rewarding to all involved and will not soon be forgotten.

MBSS Tree-Cycle ProjectMount Baker Secondary is offering students a chance to save the environ-

ment just for enjoying a hot beverage! Students who take pleasure in drink-ing purchased hot drinks are given the opportunity to receive gift cards donated to the school by local businesses. All students can enter by rinsing out their paper cup, filling out a slip for the draw, then placing their empty cup on the tree. Once the tree is full, prizes will be awarded! It’s an easy and rewarding way to contribute to saving the environment. HAVE FUN!

Good Ol’ Votes Mount Baker’s Good Ol’ Goats have made some serious ground in

CBC’s Searchlights contest to find Canada’s Best New Artist! The band itself had an hour long interview on the morning of Tuesday March 5th with CBC after they became ranked amongst the top 5 in B.C. It is out-standing to see the amount of enthusiasm, and the endless support the community has shown for these young artists. Please share this exciting news with your family and friends! The previous round of voting ended Thursday March 7th. However, you can check the contest out yourself at the link below:

Drumheller Dribble. The Senior Boys Basketball team went to Drumheller last Friday March 1 & 2nd to compete in the Dynos Sr. Boys DVSS, (Drumheller Valley Secondary School) Invitational Tournament. Our boys won 3 out of 3 games, taking first place! All the players played well, and played as a team. They all worked hard as each game was very close, especially the last 2 games, which made for exciting basketball. The boys are now getting ready to go to the AAA Senior Boys Basketball Provincials, which starts March 12th in Langley. “Go BOYS Go”!
