After one of the slow-est starts in recent years, B.C. forest re crews are enlisting help from neighbouring provinces to battle a late-season surge of res.

Most of the major res are in the sparsely pop-ulated northeast corner of B.C., restricting the booming natural gas

industry in the region. Yukon sent 79 of its re ghters to B.C. on

the weekend, joining 20 from Saskatchewan and and 35 from Ontario.

Another emerging hotspot is northwestern B.C., where communi-ties were warned Mon-day of visible smoke along Highway 16. A re near Morice Lake

was estimated at 1,200

hectares, burning within a park.

Near the Yukon border, 20 re ghters worked on the west and south anks of a 3,500-hect-

are re north of Dease Lake. In addition to the two large res, the Northwest Fire Cen-tre had seven new re starts Sunday, sparked by lightning strikes, and reports of 12 aban-

doned camp res over the weekend.

With hot weather through most of August producing high re risk, camp res were banned last week in the Kam-loops region. Other ar-eas still allowed camp- res as of Monday, but

brush and stubble burn-ing and other open res are banned in most ar-eas of the province.

In the Kootenay re-gion, the Brewer Creek re south of Invermere

was estimated at 30 hectares Monday. Start-ed by lightning, the re had 22 re ghters,

three helicopters and four pieces of heavy

equipment assigned to contain it.

A 56-hectare re on Skimmer Horn Moun-tain near the U.S. border was reported contained by Monday.

The re danger rating is high across most of

the province with pock-ets of extremely dry conditions across the north, the western Inte-rior and the Okanagan-Similkameen regions.

PHOTO B.C. FOREST SERVICE

Forest re crew ies over the Eskal re near Fort Nelson. The re reached 2,700 hectares before access to the area was restricted and work began to identify areas that can be burned off to contain its spread across the Fort Nelson River.

This summer’s forest fi re season is now offi cially upon us

Tea can make a lot of things in life seem better and recently it helped make a differ-ence for A Clear View ~digital mammography campaign.

Deb Graham, event coordinator of the Pink Garden Tea, has been organizing the event over the past three

years to help support breast cancer patients living in the Creston area.

This year Deb and her committee decided to expand the event to two days (July 27 & 28) and to direct their funds to the A Clear View ~ digital mammography campaign.

Deb’s home garden was transformed into a

welcome retreat for tea lovers and featured an array of teas from New York, made with love crepes and fruit skew-ers, plus a chance to shop at the tea market boutique for a variety of items such as teas, books, angels and hand creams. Also show-ing their support was a quilt presentation by Carmen Lancaster

(cancer survivor), sales of a special edition wa-tercolour tea cup giclee by Creston artist Laura Leeder and book sign-ing and sales by author Valerie Comer.

The Pink Garden Tea…. a part of the pic-ture of the A Clear View campaign. For more information please visit www.ekfh.ca.

Recently, Premier Christy Clark spelled out BC’s position on heavy oil pipelines across our province.

BC knows there is a market for Canadian oil in Asia. We also understand the need in Canada to reduce reli-ance on US markets by developing trade with emerging Asian mar-kets. BC already leads

Canada in developing exports of lumber and coal to Asia and led the Canadian effort to have China designate Canada as a favoured tourism destination. BC is also developing a multi-billion dollar liqui ed natural gas industry for export to Asia which will create thousands of new jobs.

Premier Christy Clark made clear that BC is not opposed to trans-porting heavy oil from

western Canada to our north-west coast. But we are stating clearly the principles that must guide this sort of devel-opment forward:

• Successful comple-tion of the formal envi-ronmental review pro-cesses.

• World-leading ma-rine oil spill response, prevention and recov-ery systems for British Columbia.

• World-leading prac-tices for land spill pre-

vention, response and recovery systems for British Columbia.

• Legal requirements regarding Aboriginal and treaty rights must be addressed and First Nations must be pro-vided with the oppor-tunities to bene t from these projects.

• British Columbia must receive a fair share of the bene ts of proposed heavy oil projects that re ect the risk borne by our citi-

zens.With regard speci -

cally to bene ts -- all British Columbians de-serve to receive bene ts from an oil pipeline that re ect the risk to our natural environment. A “fair share of bene ts” does not mean BC ex-pects to take bene ts some other jurisdiction is due. It is unfortunate some of the media has characterized our re-spectful statement as a ght over provincial

royalties. BC must re-ceive some type of -nancial bene t in return for BC assuming the risk of an oil pipeline. These bene ts will be identi ed & de ned thru discussions with the companies and oth-er governments.

I stand shoulder to shoulder with Christy Clark on these prin-ciples.

But note: the NDP categorically oppose pipelines, without even wanting to know the results of an environ-mental assessment or potential bene ts to tax payers. The BC Con-servatives categorically support pipelines, no matter the environmen-tal risk and cost and no matter whether BC re-ceives any bene ts.

Christy Clark and our BC Liberal team have taken the time to understand all the is-sues and come up with a balanced position. I hope you will let me know what you think. [email protected]

Changes to City Garbage Collection to Begin September 1Starting on September 1, 2012, the City will only collect a maximum of three (3) garbage receptacles per week per household. City Council approved the amendment to the Solid Waste Collection bylaw at their regular meeting of August 13. The intent of the amendments to the bylaw is to further encourage recycling and composting thereby reducing the amount of garbage required to be disposed of each week. The Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw also limits the size of receptacles (either containers or bags) to 100 litres and receptacles cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms each. Garbage containers are to have a water tight cover and smooth rim, must be in good structural and sanitary condition and have fixed handles. Plastic bags are to be securely tied closed at the top and be strong enough to withstand normal handling and lifting. For more information about solid waste pickup, your scheduled collection dates or to review the Solid Waste Collection and Disposal bylaw, visit the City of Cranbrook website at www.cranbrook.ca, click on the ‘Residents’ tab, and click ‘Solid Waste Pickup’.

Free Transit Rides to Cranbrook Farmer’s Market This Summer Enjoy the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market with free transit rides every Saturday morning from June 23 to October 6, 2012. The free ride comes with a catch: each passenger must be carrying

a reusable or recycled bag, be traveling to and from downtown Cranbrook and indicate to their transit driver that they are attending the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market. The City of Cranbrook is funding the free rides for all 16 Saturday markets. The Cranbrook Farmers’ Market runs 9 am to 1 pm, but the free bus rides are from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. That gives early birds and last minute shoppers’ equal access to transit time. Trips to and from the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market via BC Transit are for non-transferable passes only. This innovative partnership between BC Transit and the City of Cranbrook also achieves five specific goals identified in the community’s long term sustainability plan – “Connecting to our Future.”For more information please visit – www.bctransit.com.

New Hours for Cranbrook Public Library Starting September 4The Cranbrook Public Library’s hours are changing effective Tuesday September 4, 2012 to be open seven (7) days a week and five (5) evenings per week. And, to better serve our community, the Library will remain open on the weekends before statutory holidays, although it will remain closed for the holiday itself. For more information please call 250-426-4063 or visit www.cranbrookpubliclibrary.ca.The new schedule is:

1. The Province ended the fi scal year with a defi cit of $1.84 billion, which included the one-time repayment of $1.6 billion of HST transitional funding. Excluding that one-time repayment, the province would have posted a defi cit of $241 million, better than expected!

2. We’ve seen this improvement because we’ve continued to control spending – we held our spending increase across government to just 2.6 per cent – something we should be proud of because we’re the best in Canada. And BC continues to have some of the lowest debt levels in the world.

3. BC continues to stand out globally as a safe harbour that attracts investment in a time of international economic uncertainty. It helps us weather this downturn better than most, and it’s what this government will continue to do going forward on your behalf.

East Kootenay Foun-dation for Health vis-ited the Creston Valley Hospital this week to welcome the arrival of a colonoscope which was purchased thanks to a funding partner-ship with EKFH and the Creston – Kootenay Foundation, Interior Health and the Creston Tuck Shop.

Endoscopy at the Creston Valley Hospi-tal is a very valuable service to the citizens of Creston Valley and patients that also trav-el from other centers (Kimberley & Cran-brook) to have the pro-cedure performed.

Creston’s operating room is well equipped, the endoscopy equip-ment is state of the art and the purchase of this colonoscope replaces an older scope that now gives the hospital a full complement of high de nition scopes. This service enables patients to have their scopes in a timely fash-ion and combats the is-sue of waiting times for services performed at larger centers.

East Kootenay Foun-dation for Health is proud to work togeth-er with the Creston-Kootenay Foundation, Interior Health and the Tuck Shop for the bet-terment of health care in the Creston Valley.

If you are interested in helping health care and your local hospital, donations are gracious-ly accepted by EKFH and held in trust for the Creston Hospital and/or Swan Valley Lodge. To make a gift visit www.ekfh.ca.

Oyster Mushroom KitBack to the Roots, ABVZ5000

$1 OFF

Right now, gardens are starting to supply us with red, ripe tomatoes, gorgeous green beans and other beautiful, fresh vegetables. Growing your own is a fabulous experience, especially when it comes to harvest time. But what about growing one of my family’s favourites... mushrooms? Honestly, up until our purchasers returned from a recent shopping trip, the thought had never even entered my mind.

What they brought back is what might be the most fun and interactive way to have a fresh meal of oyster mushrooms. ‘Back to the Roots’ Mushroom Kits have everything you need to grow those tasty fungi right on your kitchen counter. Inside a brown and light-blue cardboard box, roughly the size of a large juice container is an insert with coffee grounds, oyster mushroom spores and a mister.

Growing the mushrooms could not be easier; you simply remove the perforated front cover to expose the insert and cut a crossed slit into the plastic bag. Take out the insert and submerge it in a bucket of water for 24 hours. Placed back in the carton, the mushroom kit should be put in a bright spot with indirect light. Now the insert has to be misted twice daily with the provided mister.

The fi rst few days, there won’t be much happening in the box, but after about a week, the fi rst tiny mushroom caps will pop out and after about 10 days, the oyster mushrooms will be ready to be harvested.

But the fun isn’t over yet. After you’ve harvested one side, take the panel out of the back side of the carton and repeat the process to get another batch. Two batches is what the growers from ‘Back to the Roots’ guarantee, but you can try for even more, just keep on misting.

Once the kit is all spent, you can use the growing material as a soil amendment in your garden. And this – besides the fun way of growing delicious mushrooms – is what makes ‘Back to the Roots’ so cool. The kit uses spent coffee grounds as a growing medium and the company is on pace to collect, divert and reuse about 3.6 million pounds of coffee grounds this year. At about one and a half pounds of mushrooms per kit, ‘Back to the Roots’ expects to help families grow over 135,000 pounds of fresh mushrooms at home.

The idea for the mushroom kits was developed by two graduate students at the UC Berkley. Their fi rst test batches were grown in a fraternity kitchen, but now the two are full-time mushroom farmers. They stay connected with all the kitchen-sill gardeners through their interactive website, full of tips and tricks as well as tasty recipes.

Come by the Garden Centre and see if going back to the roots and growing your own batch of oyster mushrooms is something you want to try with your family.

Till next time... happy gardening,Submitted by Kerstin

Gary Gordon, a promi-nent Deputy Fire Chief, Emergency and Busi-ness Continuity Planner and Toxicologist was in Cranbrook August 17, 18 and 19th to pro-

vide local re ghters with the knowledge and tools required to better deal with incidents in-volving hazardous ma-terials. The course was hosted by Cranbrook

Fire and Emergency Services with members from Cranbrook, Fer-nie, Baynes Lake and Jaffray Fire Depart-ments, as well as mem-bers from the Ministry of Environment partak-ing in the training.

Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services initiated a Hazardous Material program ap-proximately three years

ago, at the direction of City Council. This pro-gram provides an im-proved local capacity to deal with many issues such as leaking chemi-cals, toxic atmospheres and unknown or sus-pected hazardous ma-terials. The next clos-est hazardous materials teams to Cranbrook are located in Calgary and Vancouver.

To date Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services has responded to several incidents of note including:

• chlorine gas in a large retail store,

• chlorine leaks within City facilities,

• an apartment in which an unknown substance had been dis-charged utilizing a pres-surized vessel,

• A large propane cyl-inder breech,

• unknown chemicals which had been mixed and reacted with one another.

In each of these cases re ghters were bet-

ter able to de ne safe zones, limit the num-ber of evacuations and resolve the incidents sooner than was possi-ble before the program came into effect. Often, the situation can be rem-edied by simple actions once the appropriate type and level of per-sonal protective equip-ment can be identi ed, allowing re ghters to safely enter the site. For example, a chlorine leak in the pool area of Western Financial Place might require the evacuation of the entire

facility until the gas-ses dissipate (hours or days) if a response team could not enter the area to shut off the valve or isolate the cylinder.

With hazardous mate-rials incidents the haz-ards are not always ob-vious. The tool kit and training Gary provided this weekend will help re ghters to identify

when a signi cant life hazard is present utiliz-ing a series of simple tests and observations. Also, when there is little or no threat from an inert substance this can be readily identi ed in the eld, minimizing disruptions caused to the community due to the event.

Dr. Jane Goodall to present ‘Reason for Hope’Submitted

The Columbia Basin Environmental Educa-tion Network (CBEEN) is thrilled to announce that world-renowned primatologist, conser-vationist and humani-tarian, Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, will be in Cran-brook from September 29 to October 1, 2012.

Dr. Goodall is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), and a UN Messenger for Peace.

Dr. Goodall will be offering her widely ac-claimed ‘Reason for Hope’ presentation at the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook on Sunday, September 30, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50.00 and can be purchased from the Key City Theatre Box Of ce (250-426-7006) starting Monday, August 20. Following the presentation, Dr. Goodall will be avail-able for a question and answer period and book signing.

In addition to her public presentation, Dr. Goodall will also be speaking to a select group of students and educators about JGI’s Roots & Shoots – a global program that em-powers youth to take positive action on envi-ronmental and humani-tarian issues. This will complement the work CBEEN is already do-

ing as an umbrella net-work for environmental education in the Colum-bia Basin. CBEEN’s Wild Voices for Kids (WVFK) program offers students free programs and eld trips with lo-cal experts to promote stewardship and a con-servation ethic through direct experience of ecologically and cultur-ally signi cant areas in their own back yard.

“To host Dr. Goodall’s rst visit to the Koote-

nays is truly an honor for CBEEN. She travels extensively to share her story and message with leaders and citizens across the world” com-mented Duncan Whit-tick, CBEEN’S Ex-

ecutive Director. “We anticipate with great ex-citement the spark that Dr. Goodall will kindle in environmental edu-cation in the Columbia Basin.”

CBEEN is grateful for the generous sup-port from their premier sponsor, Kicking Horse Coffee, along with fea-ture sponsors Kootenay Savings Credit Union, Columbia Basin Trust and the Black Press East Kootenay Group. CBEEN would also like to recognize the important role of their supporting sponsors in making this event a re-ality, including St. Eu-gene Mission Resort, Key City Theatre, Cran-

brook Photo, Wildsight, Kootenay Kwik Print and Lotus Books.

Residents in the Cran-brook area will be able to recycle their old tires during a one-day tire round up this week.

The event is being or-ganized by Tire Stew-ardship BC, the com-pany that oversees the tire recycling program across the Province, and will be held on Saturday, August 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kal Tire in Cranbrook.

“The last round up was held in 2010 in Kim-berley and we collected over 35 tons of tires in six hours,” says RDEK Communications Man-ager, Loree Duczek. “I encourage everyone with tires sitting around to take advantage of this round up to get rid of their old, unused, or un-wanted tires for free.”

There will be no limit on the number of tires that can be dropped off during the event, and the following tires will be accepted on or off rim: PLTS (passenger , light truck) MTS ( me-dium truck or semi-truck tires)

“The staff at Kal Tire will also be collecting donations for the Cran-brook Food Bank during the event,” adds Duc-zek.

The tires collected will be taken to West-ern Rubber in the Delta

area where they will be ground into crumb rub-ber or coloured land-scaping mulch. Some of the products the crumb is used in include play-grounds and walkways, athletic tracks, synthetic turf elds, ooring and

mats.For more information

Just over a year ago East Kootenay Foun-dation for Health was working on its market-ing plan for the A Clear View ~ digital mam-mography campaign. That plan included the concept of Faces of the Campaign and the rst two individuals to step forward to showcase their story were Sue Selby and her daugh-ter Stephanie. A trip to Idlewild Park had photographers Chris Pullen and Cassidy Shankowsky of Cran-brook Photo pulling out all the stops to capture the essence of the spirit of a breast cancer survi-vor and one of her clos-est supporters.

What wasn’t known at the time of the photo shoot was that the very next day Sue and Steph-anie would be making their way to Calgary for Sue to undergo a ste-reotactic biopsy since the equipment was not available in Cranbrook.

Her courage, hope and strength to face breast cancer a second time

left an indelible mark on Sue’s husband Roger. “Sue has always been a very positive person and facing breast cancer not once but twice she has moved me deeply as she has refused to let this disease affect her life negatively.”

Roger also shared with Donna Grainger that his wife’s rst bi-opsy was very dif cult. When she returned from Calgary he distinctly remembers Sue say-ing that the stereotactic equipment had made the second biopsy so much easier that she wanted to help some-one else and to make a difference now through not only her pro le sup-port of the campaign but also with a $500 gift of nancial support.

Fast track to a year later and Roger Selby never forgot those words “to help someone else”. The Selby fam-ily have recently de-cided to sell their Fort Steele ranch and move into Cranbrook. It is at this time that Roger did

something remarkable for the woman who he feels sets a stunning ex-ample of living each and every day to the fullest even with breast cancer. Roger, in honour of Sue and his family who stood rm beside her donated $10,000 to the A Clear View campaign to help all those other “someone elses”.

East Kootenay Foun-dation for Health had the honour and privilege to return to Idlewild Park this week to have the talented Cassidy Shankowsky once again capture the essence of the spirit of a breast cancer survivor and this time with a bevy of her supporters ~ the Selby family.

“The journey with the A Clear View cam-paign has taken me many places but one of the most treasured mo-ments was to witness the love of a family who see their way clear to give back to com-munity, to others with a breast cancer diagnosis and to a campaign that is going to change lives.

I am one of the luckiest people in the world to be a part of something so wonderful,” shares Donna Grainger, EKFH

Executive Director. The A Clear View ~

digital mammography campaign has received an outpouring of sup-port and sits at $855,000

towards it fundraising goal. If someone you love receives a breast cancer diagnosis, help the East Kootenay Re-gional Hospital become

a center of excellence in breast cancer screening by making a campaign donation today, visit www.aclearview.ca to learn more.

Organizations can now apply for funding for projects that will create or enhance acces-sibility for people with disabilities in Canadian communities through the Government of Canada’s Enabling Ac-cessibility Fund.

David Wilks, Member of Parliament for Koo-tenay Columbia, today invited organizations in Kootenay Columbia to submit proposals for small projects. These

may include renova-tions, construction and retro tting of buildings, modi cation of vehicles for community use or enhancements to make information and com-munication technolo-gies more accessible.

“The Government of Canada recognizes the abilities of all Canadi-ans and is committed to removing barriers for people with disabili-ties,” said Mr. Wilks. “Through the Enabling Accessibility Fund, our Government is improv-

ing access to facilities, activities and services to enable all Canadians to participate more fully in society.”

The call for propos-als was launched by Dr. Kellie Leitch, Par-liamentary Secretary to the Honourable Di-ane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, on August 21, 2012. Or-ganizations can submit proposals until Octo-ber 5, 2012, and can re-ceive up to $50,000 per project.

Being a butcher isn’t just a profession; it’s an art...Being a butcher isn’t just a profession; it’s an art. In addition to knowing all the characteristics of slaughter animals, fish and poultry, butchers must be able to quarter them into sections, know the characteristics of each of these sections as well as how to prepare and cook them.

A butcher is also an artist when it comes to preparing meat, fish and poultry: de-boning, mincing meat, preparing French cuts, deli meats, fish fillets and so on. He or she must also know how to prepare brine and marinades.

Some butchers specialize in wild meat, such as deer, caribou, moose, bear and wild boar. He or she must have the necessary knowledge to advise clients on how to keep the animal’s meat intact after it has been slaughtered until it can be sectioned. Butchers must also know all the various methods of preparing wild fowl.

Butchers are true connoisseurs when it comes to their field of specialization and they are top-rate advisors for clients. And since we live in a multicultural country that has people with all types of tastes and ways of preparing meat, butchers also need to be aware of these cultural differences.

The art of being a butcher means knowing how to get the most out of each piece of meat that goes to the customer, so that it can be truly appreciated. Whether he or she works for a large restaurant or hotel chain, or in the kitchen at a large construction site, we rely on our butchers to provide us with meat, fish and poultry to make delicious meals.

Automotive repair is now a hightech industry... Today’s cars and trucks have more computing power than the spacecrafts used in the Apollo missions! The “shade tree mechanic” is no more. Today’s technician is in a demanding and rapidly changing profession. To stay in a very competitive industry, a shop must be committed to investing in technology, quality service and exceptional customer relations. The best time to check out a repair facility is before you need one. Ideally, take your vehicle in for minor service, such as an oil change or tire rotation. Use this opportunity to look over the service area, note the equipment used and talk to service personnel.Licences-Repair facilities must have a journeyman automotive technician on staff at all times. Qualifications should be posted in plain sight, as should municipal licences. Do not do business with a facility that is not licensed. Appearance-A clean, well-organized facility reflects attention to detail and an effort to maintain a professional image.Amenities-The facility should have a comfortable waiting area. Many shops now provide additional services for the convenience of customers that may be beneficial.Equipment-A good repair facility will have up-to-date equipment and information for a wide variety of makes and models. Some shops choose to specialize and this may limit their ability to work on all types of vehicles.Recommendations-Ask your family and friends about their experiences. Were they charged the price they were quoted? Was their vehicle ready when promised? Were they treated courteously? Were all questions about the repair answered thoroughly? Ask about the shop’s warranty. Most repair facilities will warranty their parts and labor either in writing or in shop posted announcements. To receive the most beneficial and accurate vehicle repair, you the customer must provide the clearest and most comprehensive information possible. You know your vehicle and will be the first to know when its performance changes. You also know your vehicle’s repair and maintenance history. The more information you can share with a repair facility, the better prepared they are to identify problems.Don’t be embarrassed to ask questions. Before you leave, be sure you understand all shop policies regarding diagnostic fees, labour rates, warranties, time lines, methods of payment and whether or not you can have the parts that were replaced.

When it’s hot… and when it’s coldIt’s summer and it’s sweltering hot out there. So why may you ask are we talking about the trade of heating technician? Because a heating technician takes care of many more things than just heating systems.

A heating technician installs and repairs air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, installs heat pumps and humidifiers, replaces furnaces and repairs air exchangers, compressors and all types of motors.

All these appliances are useful to consumers especially when they are properly installed and maintained by a heating technician. For example, a heat pump can reduce an electricity or oil bill by 30 to 40%. Having an air exchanger installed eliminates humidity in the summer and maintains better air circulation in the winter when all the windows are closed. A humidifier protects woodwork during the winter and reduces allergies in the summer.

It’s very important to have maintenance work done on these heating systems once a year: forced air systems, hot water systems, heat pumps, electric baseboard heaters, auxiliary components, etc. As for hot-air generators and gas boilers, these should be checked every two years. A qualified technician will ensure the work is carried out in a professional manner.

Depending on the appliance, the technician will verify the belt tensions, clean ducts, insulate hot-air ducts, grease certain components, maintain coils, etc. In other words, the technician will carry out all the maintenance work necessary to ensure your comfort, no matter what the season, for many years to come.

Finding the right home may seem like the hard part of a real estate trans-action, but in reality, getting the best financing can be much harder. This is partially because we have so many options nowadays for mortgage loans and so many places to find them. Using a mortgage broker is by far the best way to go about finding and arranging the very best mortgage to suit your specific needs. Trust in a mortgage broker that knows how to pack-age your application, what pitfalls to look out for.

The benefits of using a professional mortgage broker include:Reduce your stress and frustration. There are dozens of lenders from which to choose, so why not let an expert handle the application process for you? These days the forms and other data that are required for a loan application can be quite complicated, so it is wise to hand the entire pro-cess over to a professional.

Fewer complications. A seasoned mortgage professional will have years of experience, and that will help him or her navigate the tricky loan appli-cation waters that lie ahead. Let a broker’s know-how work to your bene-fit.

Help you get the best deal possible. Although you may be tempted to apply for the mortgage on your own, by hiring a professional you are assured of getting the best interest rate, the best payment plan, and the best deal in general.

Save you time. The most valuable of all commodities. A broker has the experience to make sure you get the best package for your individual needs.

Real personalization. Since the mortgage broker works for you (not the lenders), he or she offers you unbiased advice and helps you select the mortgage that’s absolutely right for you. You get the personal service you just cannot get from a bank.

Service at no cost. Not only will a broker obtain the best mortgage rate for you, broker services cost you nothing.

The AMP Advantage. The AMP designation differentiates mortgage bro-kers from others in the mortgage industry. It demonstrates their commit-ment to providing you, the borrower with the highest level of service while finding the best mortgage solution suited to your needs, explain all of your mortgage options and provide mortgage peace of mind. You’ll feel at ease when dealing with a mortgage broker who has met a higher standard of ethics and is committed to ongoing training.

The Ktunaxa Nation Council announced that they have purchased the old Central School Building in Cranbrook British Colum-bia. The Central School Building will become an of ce for the Ktunaxa Na-tion Council (KNC), and house up to 150 staff mem-bers between the KNC oth-er af liated organizations.

“We have been looking for a space that could ac-commodate our growing organization and its many staff members,” said Kath-ryn Teneese, Ktunaxa Na-tion Chair.

“Currently we have many dispersed of ces, in a variety of locations, and this will allow us to consolidate and centralize services, which will pro-mote resource ef ciencies, improve communications, and allow better support across all the sectors which make up the Ktunaxa Na-tion Council.”

In a recent analysis, g-

ures show that the Ktunaxa inject more than $30 million annually into the regional economy. Most revenue is generated is from consulting and professional services, along with various Ktunaxa owned enterprises, with less than 3% of core funding coming from AANDC (De-partment of Indian Affairs).

The KNC is governed by a nine member Executive Council, which is comprised of the Chiefs of the four Ca-nadian Ktunaxa communi-ties and ve Council Chairs which represent the sectors of the KNC: Corporate; Economic; Social Invest-ment; Lands and Resources; and Traditional Knowledge and Language.

“When the opportunity for the Central School building presented itself, the Nation Executive was whole heart-edly in favour,” continued Teneese. “The building is historically iconic and we value the preservation of culture, tradition and heri-tage, and as such, we accept the responsibility of main-

taining the heritage value moving forward.

Many Ktunaxa went to the school there when it was active, and the building is centrally located in the Ktu-naxa Traditional Territory in the lands now known as Cranbrook. The purchase of the Central School Building represents a continuum of the history of Ktunaxa on its lands, and is symbolic of Ktunaxa efforts in moving towards self-governance.”

The building, built in 1909, will become a centre for cultural gatherings and will house a Ktunaxa Nation Museum, for which resource planning is already under-way. The building will also have a dedicated space for Ktunaxa Elders to discuss and share cultural values and history. The building will be home to many af li-ated organizations including Ktunaxa Kinbasket Treaty Society, St. Eugene Mis-sion Resort Holdings Ltd., Ktunaxa Holdings Ltd., Traditional Knowledge Lan-guage Enrichment Society, Kootenay Aboriginal Busi-ness Development Agency (KABDA) and FlexiNET Broadband Inc.

All pre-purchase inspec-tions, including building and building systems, structural, environmental, air quality and re inspection have been concluded, and date of pos-session will be October 1st. There is some minor external restoration & repair work to the brickwork that will take place immediately, and there are plans for upgrades to the heating and cooling systems in the future.

A Grand Opening will take later this fall, at which time the Ktunaxa will welcome the citizens of Cranbrook and surrounding region to join in the celebration.
