IntroductionStress, long hours and unhealthy lifestyle are common conditions for people around globe - especially in HK and China’s major cities. How we spend our precious leisure time is of critical importance for distressing and healing. Design for Leisure focuses on the sports and leisure market and on the importance of downtime, play exercise as an escape from our hectic world. We will explore lifestyle trends, emerging sports and leisure activities in China and create innovative solutions for the way people will play in China in the future.

Desogn for whom?We are required to match the areas of participation with an emerging trend and demographic. Some emerging sports and leisure markets areas:• Women• Backcountry• Wired• Spiritual

• Urban Research where? Our research should involve expanding and identifying additional emerging markets. Good resources for information are sports, leisure and lifestyle magazines.

Play what? The second component in the mix is sports and leisure activities. Here we look at all the types of activities people perform while they engage in recreation. By identifying activities instead of product

categories we are able to see solutions from a wider perspective. Play when?Projects should be developed for a 5-year-in-the future approach. which technologies will surge forward? What new technologies will emerge? How will China’s cultural, social and lifestyle trends evolve during the next five years? How will those evolutions/ revolutions affect the development of our ideas?

Play where? This is the part of the mix where we look at outdoor context and environment - Think water, air, land, climate, weather, time of day, evening, night...where shall we go? Inner city? Backcountry? Underground or up in the air? How does id look like? Green, grey or dark? Etc.

Design how?Mix it up. Take the best fit froma personal perspective. What appeals to us from a personal and participation level? Which Chinese market segment wouls us like to work for? Where do we see the greatest potential for meaningful solution? What do we need in our portfolio?

Helmet camelbak - (Mountain biking)- more easy for them to drink water- minimize the harm of sun ray to the head, which is the most suering area

Towel camelbak - (Hiking / Running)- as water bag for cooling down the body temperature- as towel for rubbing o the sweat

Hiking, marathon, trail running, biking, etc, all are the sports which is large amount of energy consumption and need to expose under the sun. Many people will then may suered from sunstroke, in order to prevent from this, people should drink plenty amount of water.

ThermoregulationThermoregulation is an important aspect of human homeostasis. Most body heat is generated in the deep organs, especially the liver, brain, and heart, and in contraction of skeletal muscles. Humans have been able to adapt to a great diversity of climates, including hot humid and hot arid. High temperatures pose serious stresses for the human body, placing it in great danger of injury or even death. For humans, adaptation to varying climatic conditions includes both physiological mechanisms as a byproduct of evolution, and the conscious development of cultural adaptations.

Thermoregulation in both ectotherms and endotherms is controlled mainly by the preoptic area of the anterior hypothalamus.

Initial ideas of Hydration

Idea 1/A device which can purify the urine or the polluted water, then for drinking, used for when you were lost or trapped during hiking or other outdoor activities.

Idea 2/A sports towel with a camel bag inside, where the camel bag provide hydration and cool down the body temperature with the water inside. The towel suface can also used for ridding out the sweat.

Idea 4/A helmet with a some water inside, located in the space between the rubber and the helmet. The water may used for hydration and cool down the body temperature.

Idea 3/A vest with a camel bag and a spray system inside, where the camel bag provide hydration and the spray used for cool down the body temperature.

Initial ideas of Hydration

What is it?It is comfortable and flexible running suit, preventing body water loss or body dehydration. It adapts to the body, therefore it is gear that can be worn underneath the clothes, suitable to be used by all person sizes because it is strechable. Utimately what the gear does is be able to regulate the flow of the sweat. But at the same time protecting you from a sunstroke, specially when running in hong kong. It is detachable it can be separated into two parts, the upper part that is the one protecting the head and the lower the one protecting the body. However it comes in two different versions, one adapted to men and another to the women. Because we don’t have the same physiolagy and that we don’t all sweat the same way.

What does it do?It significantly reduces the body temperature in the affected zones, located mainly in the spine, shoulder blades area, arm pits. Basically the shape is based on the area where we sweat the most. It is suppose to balance your body temperature and prevent you from dehydrating. If you are exposed to an intense amount of heat.

How does it do it?It does it by the latest technology of the «OUTLAST» fiber, which can absorbs, preserves, divides and releases body heat, depending on changes in the external climate through the use of patented microencapsulated Thermocules™. Outlast® technology’s phase change materials (PCMs), incorporated into clothing, interact with the skin’s temperature to provide a buffer against temperature swings. PCMs are materials that can absorb, store and release heat while the material changes from solid to liquid and back to solid.

Why is it so great? It is so great because it can prevent you from getting dehydrated and also from being embarrased by the amount of sweat that your body can generate. Very often runners love training on sunny days, which are the days when the temperature is highest. That way you can run up to your highest effort without feeling discomfortable. Because it balance, regulizes your body temperature your don’t experience any discomfort while doing that activity which make you have a better resistance.

Who use it?It is mainly used by runners, it can be specially useful if you are training for a marathon, but it can also be use by a regular user. The gear is specially adapted to the female body, and men body.

Final idea of Hydration - Stage 1

What is it?It is a kit of a trendy hat gear and strap to be used outdoors activities, that prevents sunstroke and therefore dehydration. The strap is equipped with a pocket that store and keeps your bottle of water cool. Inside the hat is located, there is one detachable part that has gel inside, and which you can put into the freezer. The same for the strap. The outlook of the hat is made out of a reflective material, that would make the light to bounce.

What does it do?It significantly reduces the body temperature in the areas of the body that heat up the most, located mainly in the liver, heart and brain. Basically the shape is based on where the heat is mostly generated. Through this kids are safer and avoid sunstroke. Plus, because it is equipped with a reflective material on the outside which also prevents you from suffering a sunstroke.

How does it do it?Differnt parts are made of different materials in order to work out the best function which aim to different problems. Five materials are being used:- X-static is used for the hat outside, which is a fiber made with layer of 99,9% pure silver, and so can reflected the sun ray to the atmosphere.- Abletex is used for the hat inside, which is the first material to satisfy the demands for both enhanced waterproofness and improved moisture permeability.- Cool gel pack is the main element of our design, which used for cooling down the body temperature so that less more risk of suffereing by dehydration, the gel is mostly made of hydroxyethyl cellulose (Cellusize™)or vinyl-coated silica gel.- Polyethylene (PE) is used for the pack of the gel, it is the most widely used plastic, good at chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, impact resistance, and also it is recyclable.- Soft Microfiber is used for at the top of the pack, it create a “flat” soft fabric surface which is more comfortable to wear, as a thermal distribution layer which creates a soft, uniform contact area with the user’s head, thus avoids any “freezing” sensation.

Why is it so great? It is so great because it can prevent your kids from getting dehydrated and getting a sunstroke. Parents don’t have to worry, when their kid is out on sunny day. It is fashionable and light colored to be able to maintain the body temperature regular. The kid wouldn’t actually feel the heat and or any discomfort.

Who use it?It is used by kids who are between 10-12 years old, basically pre teenager. Who love outdoors activities, mainly hiking. These kids are constantly in the quest of achieving social acceptance, therefore they are always following the latest trends.

Final idea of Hydration - Koola-CapWhat is it?An accessory line of hat wear and scarf for sunstroke prevention for kids.

What does it do?The hats reduce the body temperature in the area of the body that heat up the most, located in the

brain. The scarf is used for protecting the neck area and to get rid off the sweat.

How does it do it?Both the hats and scarf are also covering a gel pack for cooling, the user only needs to put the gel pack into the freezer for around 30 mins. The scarf is made up of microfiber, which is the same material for sports towel, it is super absorbent, quick drying and lightweight.

Why is it so great? It’s the new solution in the market of preventing your kids from getting dehydrated and getting sunstroke, they need to be protected without looking ridiculous. The products make the parents and the

kid safe and comfortable. Who uses it?It is designed for kids who aged between 2 - 5 years old. They the one’s who need more protection since they love outdoors activities, but since they are too little and are not aware of the heat and risk of dehydration, when exposed to the sun.

Mock up

Color testing of Cap

Mock up of ScarfWe’ve modified the way of containing the gel pack after making this mock up, we realized that it’s better to put the gel pack between two fabric, because the fabric can avoids any “freezing” sensation.

We added the plastic adjusting bar at the back of the cap after making this mack, because the bar can make the cap become more universal.

After making these two hats, we’ve add a layer of metal fabric, in order to solve the problem of holding the gel pack, also the metal fabric can keep the cool of it.
