Dear parents and caregivers,

In my opinion, 2019 has been our most successful year at South Padbury and as this is our last newsletter, I’ll make a few observations of the year gone and how this will link into 2020. A strong indicator as to how well a school is operating is enrolments and if we use our enrolments as a guide, then we’ve had a remarkable year. Every day we’re receiving requests to enrol, and this momentum has continued all year. With a relatively small catchment area, we are in the position to accept out of boundary enrolments and these enrolments constitute 57% of our school cohort. Without these out of boundary students we’d have only 177 students at school and this would see us with 8 less teachers, 3 less education assistants and 1.5 less office staff. Having said that, it is a balancing act. Last year I had more than enough applications to absolutely fill every class to the maximum amount of students allowable. We chose not to do this and in doing so forfeited $210,000 in funding via the student-centred funding model. In retrospect, I believe that this was the correct course of action as I’d rather have productive classes than maxed out classes for the extra funds. We’ll continue to make these enrolment decisions based on student outcomes rather than financial incomings.

Our 2020 planning day was highly successful. As a staff we develop our operational plans, which effectively drive our Business Plan and then the finance committee builds the 2020 budget around these plans. By planning in this order we ensure that curriculum is driving the budget and not the other way around. In the seven years that we’ve been planning in this way the finance committee has honoured every fiscal request from the curriculum teams and this will continue in 2020.

Our staffing this year has been exceptional and I’ve spent a lot of time in classrooms providing constructive feedback to teachers in regards to their professional performance via their performance management regime. Again, at South Padbury we do this differently to most schools whereby I meet with each classroom teacher at the start of the year and we talk about their students only. From this starting point, the performance management regime is based solely around how the teacher is addressing the specific learning needs of each and every student in their class. This approach ensures that we all retain our focus right throughout the year and our sole purpose to being here remains at the forefront of everything that we do.

When I restructured the school in 2015 we had around 40% less students than we have now. These extra students have placed enormous extra pressure on my workload and to address this, in 2020 Tasha Donnelly will be joining the leadership team in the office. She brings enormous extra expertise into the team particularly in terms of ICT and academic extension and enrichment. Tash did the job in Term 1 of this year and did an exceptional job and I know will again prove to be invaluable. Having said that, Verne Jones will again be spending Term 1 from weeks 3 to 10 as the Principal of Padbury Primary School. Tash will be joining Verne as the school’s behaviour management coordinator, whereby Verne does this by himself at the moment. Behaviour management is an area that I really want to extricate myself from as I believe that the principal’s role is to be the chief encourager, consoler and supporter of all of our students. When I’m also involved in behaviour management as a disciplinarian, I do believe that it diminishes the effectiveness and authenticity of my chief role.

2020 will see Lisa McGuigan (Year 1), Julia Bishop (Year 6) and Felicity Thomas (Kindergarten) all staying at home with their new babies. I wish these 3 beautiful girls all the very best in motherhood and thank and commend them for a job well done this year.

I do work closely with parents on a daily basis and this is the key to our success. I thank each and every member of our school community all the very best for the Christmas and new year period, and for those families who are leaving us, all the very best for the future.

P E Lessons in Term 4 have been delivered by parents and coaches from a variety of district sports.

Hockey - Many thanks to Mr and Mrs Ezzy and Mr Harris for their interesting and informative introduction to Hockey. These parents are from the Whitfords Hockey Club and are keen to see lots of juniors 'sign up' in 2020.

AFL - Chad Barns from the Joondalup Falcons delivered and impressed with his AFL knowledge for all PE lessons in Week 6.

Thank you for all of your time, effort and support. You are the people who make a difference and build the sense of community we have at SPPS. The P&C would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season and we hope everyone enjoys the summer break. We look forward to what we can achieve together in 2020.
