Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Carnivals and community events

Throughout the year the school hosts and partakes in a whole array of carnivals and community events. Please be aware of the fact that adolescent siblings are not welcome at these events. The reasons are;

1. Having adolescents on the school site poses a significant and unacceptable child protection risk for the 400+ children in my care.

2. Any school aged child on school premises during instructional hours automatically comes under my legal duty of care, and this is a duty I refuse to accept.

3. The adolescents have had their turn being South Padbury students and now it’s their siblings turn.

4. All school aged children are required by law to be at school, and South Padbury will not support truancy in any way, shape or form.

5. We have a legal responsibility to report truancy, and will do so.

Our community events (such as Harmony Day) are set up and planned for our students only and any school aged students who are not enrolled here will be asked to leave. Should they refuse my legal instruction the intruder/s will be referred to education security and/or the police.

Air-conditioning

Every year every one of our air-conditioners is serviced. This year the service provider identified that the units in the senior block (TA10,11,12 and the Music Room) required new panels. The technician did tell us that the new panels would omit a smell when we first used them. We were advised to run them 24 hours a day and when possible with all the windows open, which we did. The smell was not toxic and disappeared in a few days. It’s been a few weeks since the smell disappeared.

I hope the above facts dispel any myths that may or may not be circulating about the air-conditioners in the senior block.

Student engagement and school operations

As we enter Week 8 of Term 1 2019 I am, on the whole, extremely pleased with the vast majority of our students’ progress so far this year and can’t fault how the school is operating. The staff we’ve assembled over the years via the merit selection process continue to shine and I’m so impressed, and often in awe of what’s happening in our classrooms each and every day.

Swimming lessons

These lessons begin 1 April 2019 and finish 12 April 2019 and involve all students from Years PP through to Year 4. As the school has grown so much over the year the logistics of this exercise have become more complex. However, as a school we remain committed to the exercise as we acknowledge how vitally important it is for Australian’s to be able to swim.

Self reflection and pledge

When having been at South Padbury for 6 months and I was appointed as the substantive principal to

South Padbury in 2013 I wrote in the newsletter; “This merit select process was concluded on Friday July 19

2013 and I was the successful applicant for this position. I will work hard at South Padbury, always keeping

the students’ best interests at the forefront of all decisions made.“ I believe that I’ve remained true to my word

and pledge to continue working hard for our great school and maintain my focus—our students.

2nd Hand Uniform donations

If you have any unwanted smaller size uniforms you

no longer need they would be gratefully accepted at

Kindy or Pre-Primary as spares. They can be

dropped off at either Early Childhood areas or the

front office.

Messages to Students

Please be aware that it can be difficult to pass on

messages to students during the day, particularly if

you call the office to pass on a message to your

child in the afternoon as we do not have phones in

every class, and leaving the office to deliver a

message is not always possible. Please have a

plan in place with your child if you are running late

to collect your child. Children should make their

way to the front office if a parent/carer has not

arrived to collect them at 3.00pm.

Introducing Our 2019 Head Girl and Two of Our Student Councillors

Hi, my name is Indiana McGrath and I am your Head Girl for 2019. I enjoy all sports particularly netball. I love hanging out with my friends and relaxing at the beach. One day I hope to pursue my dream of being a teacher and the return to South Padbury to teach and give back to the school that started my story. This year I hope to be seen as an approachable Head Girl that any student feels comfortable coming up to and telling their wants, stories, needs and concerns to. I endeavour to have a positive impact on this school.

Hello teachers and parents, my name is Jay Goodwin and I am one of the Student Councillors for 2019. As a Student Councillor I would personally like to have more fundraisers for charity as the children love them. I would also like to add ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ books because most children have never heard of the books. My favourite things to read about are dragons because there are so many theories about them. I also like Greek mythology because it is very interesting to read about and there

are so many different versions of the classical myths. Thank you.

Hi my name is Bree Newland one of your Student Councillors of SPPS 2019. I am a hardworking student and I try my best in all learning areas. I am a kind and caring student. I am always kind if someone was to ask me a question or even talk to me. This year as a Student Councillor I will be looking out for upset or excluded students and trying to solve the problem or just staying with them to cheer them up. I like to look for the good in everything and be positive which I will do throughout the year. Thank you

P&C Report

Kookaburra Chronicles

Page 8

I’m pleased to announce that as of last week’s meeting, this year’s P&C committee is now complete. I

have taken on the role of P&C President and Amanda Duckworth, has taken on the role of Secretary. As

a long standing parent of our school, I have seen how far we have already come and I look forward to

what we can achieve together in the future.

On behalf of the entire South Padbury Primary School Community, I would like to send a huge “Thank

you” to our outgoing P&C President, Chantelle Martin. Chantelle’s help and knowledge has

been invaluable to our school over the last 3 years and she's left some pretty big shoes to fill. I

am hopeful that this transition will happen seamlessly.

Our new completed P&C has hit the ground running. I’m so pleased with the amount of new, enthusiastic

and capable members we have and we can’t wait to share some of the big ideas we have planned. Our

members are working intensely behind the scenes, so all in our school community can benefit.

Our next Fundraiser is our Mother’s Day Stall on Thursday 9 May. Kindy A will be able to choose their

gifts the same week, on Tuesday 7 May. The children love being able to choose something special

themselves from the stall. Notes will be coming home today, so please keep an eye out for it. Spare notes

will be available from the front office. Please return all orders by Thursday 11 April.

New General Members to our P&C are vitally important and always welcome. When you become a

financial member, you have the opportunity to vote at meetings, on what happens in our P&C. A $1

payment gives you these rights.

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 15 May at 7pm, in the staff room. I look forward to

seeing you there.

Leona Liddelow - P&C President
