Komen Breast Cancer Foundation WINTER 2006 KOMEN CONNECTION Thousands of you, determined to stomp out breast cancer, marched through Central Park on Sunday, September 10, in the Komen New York City Race for the Cure ® . Led by 14 pink-clad women on Harleys, feather boas flying, and warmed by a bright sun and cheering onlookers, 20,000 people ran or strolled with a single goal: to beat breast cancer. A joyous day for all, almost circus-like, and not just because of the guys on stilts, the clowns and the face-painters. Thanks to your energy and support, we raised more than $4.1 million dollars — a record! Contributing their not-inconsiderable talents, a number of celebrities were on hand: CBS2 anchor Maurice DuBois (a long-time Komen GNYC supporter) and colleagues Tamsen Fadal, Kristen Cole and Kate Sullivan; Christine Nagy of 106.7 Lite FM; syndicated TV star Judge Judy Sheindlin; “Sopranos” actress Maureen Van Zandt; actress and director of “Southern Comforts” Judith Ivey; “One Life to Live” actress Robin Strasser; members of the cast of “As the World Turns” and Donna Hanover, co-host of “The Morning Show” on WOR Radio 710AM. Television correspondent and co-host Denise Richardson contributed to a rousing finish at the finish line; and Brooklyn-raised songstress Maya Azucena rocked at the start and at the Bandshell. There were also special appear- ances by the Knicks City Dancers, as well as Cheer NY on our float, a new start line feature. It began as the vision of a group of volunteers who ran a small healthclinic out of an Episcopal church. Now, 35 years later, the Charles B.Wang Community Health Center (CBWCHC) is housed in a spacioussix-story building on Canal Street. Since its first health fair in 1971, theCenter has expanded to meet growing community needs. KomenGreater NYC recognized CBWCHC in 2006 as “Komen Greater NYCGrantee of the Year” for its “fierce devotion to the breast health needsof its patients.”

Because cancer rates are lower in China than in the U.S., women oftendon’t see screening as a priority. Health often takes a back seat toissues of basic survival, like employment and housing, explains UnitManager Shao Ping Yu, with socioeconomic, educational, languageand cultural barriers contributing to the low breast cancer screeningrates in the community.

The Center’s Asian-American Breast Health Screening and OutreachProgram, funded by Komen since 1995, targets Chinese-Americanimmigrant women age 40 and over from the metropolitan and tri-stateareas of New York City. Komen-funded outreach workers help todispel commonly held myths about breast cancer and encouragewomen to come to the health center for mammograms and clinicalbreast exams. CBWCHC also hosts educational workshops andFamily Health Days that offer free breast health screenings and teachwomen how to perform breast self exams. The program also providesfollow-up services for any woman diagnosed with breast cancer.

By providing excellent breast health services to their community overthe years and continuously evolving in response to its needs,Charles B. Wang Community Health Center epitomizes the Komenmission in action.
