What is sinusitis?

• Sinusitis refers to an inflammation of membrances lining with the sinuses that may occur due to bacterial, viral or fungal infections.

• Sinusitis Prevalence in USA only:Number of adults diagnosed with sinusitis: 29.4 million(12.3%).

What are sinuses?

• Sinuses are one of the hollow cavities that are present in the skull and are air filled.

• Healthy sinuses have no bacterial, viral or fungal infection.

(1) Types of sinusitis

1. Acute sinusitis

• Led by viral, fungal or bacterial infections.

• Contaminated from nose to sinuses.• Normally subsides within 10 days.

2. Subacurte sinusitis

• Inflammation lasts for 1 to 2 months.

3. Chronic sinusitis

• Led by an allergy.• Acute attacks occur frequently.• Last for approximately 2-3 months.

4. Recurrent sinusitis

• Attacks may last up to a year.

Symptoms of sinusitis

• Coughing• Nasal discharge• Sneezing• Stuffy nose• Headache• Sore throat• Facial pressure• High fever etc.

Causes of sinusitis

• Air pollutants.• Cold• Pet danders• Dust allergy• Deviated nasal septum• Nasal polyps• Allergic reactions• Some medical conditions etc..

Preventing sinusitis (i)

Get immediate treatment!

Use -

• Saline sprays• Nasal lubricant sprays• Nasal irrigation

Preventing sinusitis (ii)

Avoid -

• Extremely dry indoor environment• Irritant exposure• Smoking...

Sinusitis treatment (i)

Acute sinusitis -

• Decongestants (e.g. steam inhalation, nasal drops or sprays).

• Antibiotics (as per prescribed, usually for 10 to 14 days).

Sinusitis treatment (ii)

Chronic sinusitis -

• Treat Underlining Cause• Warm moist air.• Warm compresses• Saline nose drops• Antibiotics and often• Nonprescription decongestant

What if sinusitis remains untreated

Delayed sinusitis treatment or unattended sinusitis may leadto:

• Unwanted pain & discomfort and OFTEN

• Meningitis or brain abscess and so on!
