From times immemorial India has adopted cleanliness as a virtue that should be practised by all human beings. Not only did the importance of external (read environmental) cleanliness but also internal (read mind free from evil tendencies) cleanliness was emphasised upon by great thinkers and savants. Over a period of time, running perhaps to centuries, very few societies stuck to this grand concept and continue to be good models in practising it. India as a nation has seen steady decline in practising cleanliness, particularly in public places, with the result that the Prime Minister himself has taken this as a point for national level action by every individual so that the country is able to contain pollution which is the cause of most health hazards affecting the quality of life eventually impacting on the image of the nation from a global perspective. The need of the hour is to take this up as a National Movement and ensure that every citizen gains awareness of the concept of cleanliness and voluntarily participates in it. This is more easily said than done for the simple reason that many agencies have to work in unison in marching towards a clean India. Throwing litter in public places is a common sight which rarely gets checked and penalised. When we travel by train the sight of garbage ranging from plastic bags, water bottles waste paper etc on both sides of the railway track can be taken to indicate that the train is nearing a major railway station or junction. No doubt there is some provision in railway compartments to dump the unwanted or used containers, papers cups, plastic bottles etc. But most passengers find it convenient to throw out garbage through windows and doors of the carriage without straining themselves to locate a litter box and drop it there. Roadside eateries and tea shops contribute their share of polluting the environment by not making any provision for disposal of used plates, leaves, left over food etc. Due to lack of facilities that ought to be provided in public places by local authorities, strict enforcement of cleanliness drive is very rare. Lack of adequate toilet facilities in public places and in private households in many rural pockets and slums has posed serious problem in keeping the environment clean. Media is playing an important role these days highlighting the health hazards relating to polluting the environment by using open space for toilet needs. Here again very heavy investment is needed all over the country to ensure that all households, public institutions and places like schools, hospitals, highways, tourist destinations, places of worship etc have appropriate toilet facilities. Of late many corporates, NGOs, non-profit foundations are coming forward to fill in the deficiency wherever noticed. Over the years many attempts have been made to keep the environment clean and free from pollution of any type. Due to constraints of various types like lack of assured water supply, lack of maintenance of toilets with proper facility for dealing with the waste matter and sewage and drainage connections etc the desired result has been achieved only in a few areas. In a country where provision of safe drinking water is a major problem and tapping water for other household and industrial purposes demands extensive planning and considerable investments, it is a real challenging job to link availability of water with the requirements of the people and industry. This has to be done and there is no escape from it. Time is now ripe for a concerted effort by all agencies to join the cleanliness drive call and ensure that every citizen plays his part to create the image of the country as a clean and pollution free nation. Where there is a will there is a way. Once this catches the imagination of the younger generation the goal can be achieved early. A nation which has succeeded in reaching the Mars through Mangalyan Mission and is to put shortly man in space can certainly achieve cleanliness. K. CLEAN INDIACleanliness is next to Godliness, goes the old adage.

From times immemorial India has adopted cleanliness asa virtue that should be practised by all human beings. Notonly did the importance of external (read environmental)cleanliness but also internal (read mind free from eviltendencies) cleanliness was emphasised upon by greatthinkers and savants. Over a period of time, runningperhaps to centuries, very few societies stuck to this grandconcept and continue to be good models in practising it.India as a nation has seen steady decline in practisingcleanliness, particularly in public places, with the result thatthe Prime Minister himself has taken this as a point fornational level action by every individual so that the countryis able to contain pollution which is the cause of most healthhazards affecting the quality of life eventually impacting onthe image of the nation from a global perspective.

HEALTH NOTESCERTAIN FACTS REGARDING YOUR HEALTH

(Prof. Dr. Rameeza. A. Rasheed)There’s a world of difference between being old and feeling

old. Your birthdays may be piling up, but that doesn’t mean youhave to slow down, grow weak, or lose energy. All it takes to keepyour body and spirits strong is a little exercise - and anunderstanding of what you should eat or drink

As you grow older and become less active, you may not requirehigher nutrients in your diet. But you still need more of certainnutrients, such as Vitamin B12, Calcium, and Vitamin D. A healthydiet should include plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetableswith little saturated fat or sugar. On the whole it should not exceed2000 calories a day.

Aged persons should eat 30 to 35 grams of fibre each day.Fibre may prevent constipation and conditions that affect digestion. It may also lower cholesterol and blood sugar and help you haveregular bowel movements. Fibre is found in fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, brown rice, and whole grains, such as oat, barley, wheat, corn, and rice bran.

Food poisoning may be more of a problem for older adultsbecause their senses of taste and smell aren’t as good as whenthey were younger .It may be more difficult to tell when a food isno longer fresh. To help avoid problems with spoiled food, youcan date foods that you put in the refrigerator. Medicines also canaffect the way foods taste.

If you have a problem with urinary incontinence, you need notcut back on the amount of water you drink each day. You stillneed to drink enough water and other beverages each day forgood health. That’s usually eight eight-ounce glasses of fluid. Talkwith your doctor if you have incontinence to see what can be donewithout cutting back on your fluid intake. Getting enough fluid canbe a problem for older adults, because they may not be able totell as easily when they are thirsty. If you are drinking enoughfluids, your urine will be pale yellow. If it is a bright or dark yellow, that means you need to drink more liquids.

Aerobic exercise is not needed for seniors to lose weight Mostseniors can lose weight faster through strength training thanthrough aerobic exercises..Researchers at Harvard found thatwomen who walked just three hours a week cut their risk of heartdisease by 40 percent, equivalent to the benefits of much morevigorous.

MIRACLES OF TURMERIC POWDER The yellow/orange spice of Turmeric has been in use for

over 2,000 years, and is considered one of the most effectivemedicinal herbs through its active ingredient - Curcumin. Studieshave found that a daily intake of Turmeric can do a great deal ofactual benefit to our breathing, digestion, blood flow, heart andeven brain. The curcumin has strong anti-inflmmation and anti-cancer properties. It’s amazing what just a spoon of turmeric, mixed with the right ingredients, can do. Old and wise men andwomen have, through the centuries, come up with great homeremedies using turmeric. Here are some uses for this wonderspice that will bring you relief, healing and better living:1. Treat ulcers and digestion problems: Mix one spoon of turmeric

powder in a cup of boiling water, let it cool and then drink..2. To relieve a sore throat: Mix 1/2 a spoon of turmeric and 1/2 a

spoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gurgle in the throat.3. To treat fungus on the foot and nails: Mix turmeric powder

with lemon juice until an ointment is created. Smear theointment on the problematic area for a week.Recommendation: Put socks on them and sleep through thenight this way.

4. To stop a bleeding caused by cuts or scrapes: Dub generouslywith turmeric powder for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammationeffects.

5. For quick healing of wounds : Make a thick mixture of turmericwith a bit of water. Smear on the wound and bandage it for atleast 24 hours.

6. To relieve asthma attacks: Mix 1/4 spoon of turmeric powderin a glass of hot water and drink in small sips.

7. To stop your gums from bleeding: Massage the teeth and gumswith a mixture made of equal parts turmeric powder, mustard, oil and salt.

8. Treating stubborn calluses: Prepare a thick mix of 50 gramsof turmeric powder with 3 table spoons of olive oil. Mix well toreceive the salve and then smear it on the callus.

9. To treat insect bites: Make a mixture of turmeric and lemonand smear on the injured area to stop both the itching andsuck away the small amount of poison they leave behind whichirritates the skin.

10. For rough PMS syndrome and cramps: Mix a spoon and ahalf of turmeric in a glass of hot milk and drink
