Grand Knight’s Message

Ernie Rodriguez

Worthy SKs and Brothers, as each and everyone of us are witnessing, our world and church today is in a time of turbulence. This month, my Grand Knight’s Message is an excerpt from our Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori.

“Turbulence is an unwelcome experience, which causes heart palpitations and can endanger life and limb. But it also serves a purpose. As noted, turbulence is also good for one’s prayer life. As a passenger on a plane, I’m in the pilot’s hands, but I’m ultimately in God’s hands: “Jesus, I trust in you!” The unnerving ups and downs of turbulence also serve as a good metaphor for life itself. As we begin each day, we hope it will be productive and tranquil. We often pray for lives that are calm and undisturbed. Yet, as we utter such prayers, Scripture rings in our ears. For example, in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus speaks of wars, famines and earthquakes, and he warns of persecution and even death because of his name (cf. 24:6-9). In John’s Gospel, the Lord says, “In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world” (16:33).

We experience turbulence in many ways, both in everyday life and in our life of faith. Sometimes, it’s the result of our own folly, as when we betray the trust of others or engage in self destructive behaviors. At other times, such turbulence is not of our own making. Life’s journey can be rough due to illness, financial problems, unemployment, marital discord and controversy of all sorts. The Church is in the grip of a global crisis of trust because of clergy sexual abuse and the failures of some bishops. This crisis has shaken the faith of many. Some have stopped going to Sunday Mass; others have left the Church altogether. Corrective measures once deemed effective don’t seem to have lessened scandals in the Church.

In the midst of this, what are we to do? Are we simply to grip the nearest pew and hold on tightly? Rather, we need to pray for all we’re worth. Sometimes, all I can do is to repeat over and over again: “Jesus, I trust in you!” Both clergy and laity also need to speak their mind about the scandals and do whatever they can to help

the Church restore trust and continue its mission of faith, worship and service. Just as airline passengers see turbulence as a bad thing, we usually recognize life’s problems as bad. But turbulence in our Church and in our personal lives also serves a purpose. It reminds us that we are not fully in charge. It reminds us that we need to pray and express in faith our dependence upon God. It builds up perseverance.

And it also confirms the need to change course, to take corrective actions — not looking for the smooth air of untroubled comfort but for a pathway of truth and courage through present trials. Ultimately, the air, or wind, we must seek is divine — the Holy Spirit, who carries us to everlasting life.”

On Sept 8 we heard our Gospel say: Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion?” ( Lk 14:27-28)

Each month, our Supreme Chaplain has a monthly challenge for each of us Brother Knights. Here is his challenge for the Month of September by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori:

This month, I challenge you to learn more about the life of one of the martyrs and how he or she was prepared to pay any price to follow Christ. Second, I challenge you to participate in the Faith in Action Into the Breach program or read Into the Breach on your own with a particular eye toward how we can best prepare to carry our crosses.

Questions for Reflection: What cross is Christ asking you to carry in your life? Are you willingly taking up the cross and seeking to follow Christ or trying to avoid the cross? In what concrete ways can you imitate the martyrs’ total commitment to Christ?

So as your Grand Knight, I question each and every one of you, ‘What cross are you carrying’?

Vivat Jesus Ernie Rodriguez

Congratulations to Andy Ziny

August Knight of the Month

Andy has been a parish member since April 2006. He serves as a lector, EMHC, sacristan, acolyte, servant leader of sacristans and acolytes, coordinator of the Monday evening Bible study, coordinator of the Holiday Food Basket ministry, part of the Fostering Hope "Haven" ministry, member of the finance council, and sometimes carpenter (he built three tables on and near the altar, frame/stand for the Divine Mercy image, and have three kneelers in the queue to be completed).

Brother Andy is a retired US Air Force service member, and currently works as a civilian for the Air Force at Peterson AFB. His job is transportation planning for homeland defense and assistance to civil authorities, which usually means providing assistance in the wake of natural disasters, such as the earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2010, the hurricanes that hit Texas, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico in 2017, and hurricane Dorian which severely damaged some of the islands in the Bahamas earlier this month. Andy also volunteers at the Arts and Crafts center on the Air Force Academy and teaches introductory wood working classes.

Andy married his wife Michele in 1985. They have two grown children, daughter (Charlotte, age 32) lives in southern Virginia with her husband and works as an assistant professor of Nursing at Sentera College of Health. Son (Anton, age 31) lives in Alamogordo NM

and works on F-16 aircraft at Hollomon AFB and volunteers as a fire fighter.

We are blessed for having Brother Andy in Council 9993. We thank him for his dedicated service in the Country, Council, church, and community.

Congratulations to the Davis Family

August Family of the Month The Davis’ last selection for "Family of the Month" was November 2004. Since then they have continued in their support of St. Patrick's Church. Because

of this, Jim and Nancy Davis have been selected as Council 9993 August Family of the Month.

N a n c y h a s been act ive w i t h t h e L a d i e s Auxil iary by helping with t h e i r m a n y activities. She has focused on making baby blankets w i t h t h e Crafters.

Jim has been focused for many years on working Wednesday’s at the Marian House Soup Kitchen. He has been working on many projects involving peeling onions and many other clean up projects. He spends about 6 hours every week there. He tries to help out on the first Saturday of the month when St. Patricks sponsors the Marian house. Also, once a month he transfers food donations from King Soopers to the Food Pantry, at St. Patricks, for distribution on Friday. Jim also helps with monthly pancake breakfasts and has managed the Sound Ministry for several years. Jim is currently also serving as the Council’s Lecturer.

Thank you Jim and Nancy for the may ways you have inspired and contributed to the Ladies Auxiliary, Council 9993, Assembly 3049 and the community.

Respect Life News: October is Respect Life Month by Ron Krom, Life Director

Every day of every month should be. Every human life does matter. So, let’s get ready to spread the word, especially during October. Here are some great ways to get involved.

There is a new pro-life movie: Fatal Flaws dealing with the pitfalls and slippery slope of assisted suicide and euthanasia. Like most Christian-themed movies, it had a very limited window of opportunity to view it in theaters. So far, there was only one showing at Icon Cinema, near Interquest and Voyager Parkway,on Wednesday Sept. 11th. You can learn more about the film at https://fatalflawsfilm.com/ and it is also possible to stream it at home. All of us and our loved ones will one day face the prospect of suffering and end-of-life. We would do well to arm ourselves with the truth about this vital issue in advance. If there are additional screenings, I will send an email.

As follow-up to the Fatal Flaws movie, St. Patrick will host a seminar Sat. Sept. 28th at 9:30 AM, dealing with: • What is the status of Physician Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia in Colorado? • Is your paperwork up to date?  • Do you have the “right” paperwork? ~ Things have changed!  • Do you know how to advocate for a loved one? • If interested, RSVP to Deb at (719) 593-2880 or [email protected] to assure a seat and materials.

During October, we plan to erect our Respect Life Crosses on the parish lawn as a memorial to the thousands of children who perish by abortion each year. This is a great witness to the tragedy hidden behind clinic doors, a witness that these are our lost children, not medical waste to dispose of. We will send out a notice when we plan to erect and take down the crosses.

Bishop Sheridan will host his annual Respect Life Dinner on October 24th at the Broadmoor Hall. This is always a very nice dinner with a featured pro-life speaker. Cost is $65 for an individual or $600 for a table of 10. If our Council sponsors a table, I will send out information on how you can obtain a seat for $60. Stay tuned.

40 Days for Life is a very successful prayer campaign conducted to witness near abortion clinics. We pray for expectant parents and also for abortion workers to have a change of heart and turn to choose life. We also inform parents that there are other loving options besides abortion, such as our local pregnancy center. Since 2007, over 16000 babies have been saved! Think of it – that is enough children to populate a good-sized small town. Another result of this campaign is that 191 abortion workers have changed jobs, and over 100 abortion clinics have closed. The fall campaign goes from Sept. 25 to Nov. 3, and we need prayer warriors 24/7 for those 40 days. Sign up and help save lives. https://40daysforlife.com/local-campaigns/colorado-springs/

Finally, there may be other activities at St. Patrick, such as Roses for Life. Please watch the parish bulletins and our K of C messages. Working to save lives will have a positive impact on your life!

One-Third By now you have probably heard about the following report: Pew Research Center, July 23, 2019, “What Americans Know About Religion” that discovered only about 1/3 of Catholics believe in the real presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. (https://www.pewforum.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2019/07/Religious-Knowledge-full-draft-FOR-WEB-2.pdf) See below for an excerpt regarding the specific findings: I do sincerely hope that within the ranks of the Knights of Columbus, this number is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than 34%. But just to help ensure that the Truth is shared and known, the following is a new feature in the newsletter… Corner of the Catechism. From time to time, paragraphs from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) that teach on a particular subject will be offered. It’s hoped that you’ll be spurred to discover something deeper about our faith and pass it on to your family, friends and community.

Bible Verses Regarding the Eucharist 1. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true

food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me (John 6:54-57).

2. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes (1 Corinthians 11:26).

3. They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles (Acts 2:42-43).

4. Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf (1 Corinthians 10:17).

5. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die (John 6:48-50).

1406 Jesus said: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; . . . he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and . . . abides in me, and I in him" (Jn

6:51, 54, 56).

1407 The Eucharist is the heart and the summit of the Church's life, for in it Christ associates his Church and all her members with his sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving offered once for all on the cross to his Father; by this sacrifice he pours out the graces of salvation on his Body which is the Church.

1408 The Eucharistic celebration always includes: the proclamation of the Word of God; thanksgiving to God the Father for all his benefits, above all the gift of his Son; the consecration of bread and wine; and pa r t i c ipa t ion i n t he l iturgical banquet by receiving the Lord's body a n d b l o o d . T h e s e elements constitute one single act of worship.

1409 The Eucharist is the memoria l of Chr ist 's Passover, that is, of the w o r k o f s a l v a t i o n accomplished by the life, death, and resurrection of Chr is t , a work made present by the liturgical action.

1410 It is Christ himself, the eternal high priest of the New Covenant who, acting through the ministry of the priests, offers the Eucharistic sacrifice. And it is the same Christ, really present under the species of bread and wine, who is the offering of the Eucharistic sacrifice.

1411 Only validly ordained priests can preside at the Eucharist and consecrate the bread and the wine so that they become the Body and Blood of the Lord.

1412 The essential signs of the Eucharistic sacrament are wheat bread and grape wine, on which the blessing of the Holy Spirit is invoked and the priest pronounces the words of consecration spoken by Jesus during the Last Supper: "This is my body which will be given up for you. . . . This is the cup of my blood. . . ."

1413 By the consecration the transubstantiation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ is brought about. Under the consecrated species of bread and wine Christ himself, living and glorious, is present in a true, real, and substantial manner: his Body and his Blood, with his soul and his divinity (cf. Council of Trent: DS 1640; 1651).

1414 As sacrifice, the Eucharist is also offered in reparation for the sins of the living and the dead and to obtain spiritual or temporal benefits from God.

1415 Anyone who desires to receive Christ in Eucharistic communion must be in the state of grace. Anyone aware of having sinned mortally must not receive communion without having received absolution in the sacrament of penance.

1416 Communion with the Body and Blood of Christ i n c r e a s e s t h e communicant's union with the Lord, forgives his venial sins, and preserves him from grave sins. S ince rece i v ing th i s sacrament strengthens the bonds of charity b e t w e e n t h e communicant and Christ, it also reinforces the unity of the Church as the Mystical Body of Christ.

1417 The Church warmly recommends that the faithful receive Holy Communion when they participate in the celebration of the Eucharist; she obliges them to do so at least once a year.

1418 Because Christ himself is present in the sacrament of the altar, he is to be honored with the worship of adoration. "To visit the Blessed Sacrament is . . . a proof of gratitude, an expression of love, and a duty of adoration toward Christ our Lord" (Paul VI, MF 66).

1419 Having passed from this world to the Father, Christ gives us in the Eucharist the pledge of glory with him. Participation in the Holy Sacrifice identifies us with his Heart, sustains our strength along the pilgrimage of this life, makes us long for eternal life, and unites us even now to the Church in heaven, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and all the saints.

HELP US SERVE YOU!

Dear Brothers, You probably have seen our prayer list in the newsletter, or perhaps you have received prayer request email from us. But you may not know about other things that we do for our members. Yes, when you or a loved one are injured or seriously ill, we ask the K of C family to pray for you. If you are hospitalized or homebound, we try to arrange visits or cards or calls. If desired, we inform the parish that you wish to receive communion. Of course, we can’t do any of that unless someone tells us of the need. Perhaps a friend or family member will inform us, or we may hear your name mentioned at Mass. Best of all, you can call or email an officer listed on our web page www.kofc9993.org . Or if you put in a prayer request at the parish, ask them to notify the Knights.Next, if you should be too ill to contact us, or should die, your family should be made aware that you are a Knight of Columbus. Grown children living far away or surviving spouses may not be aware of, or may forget about, your membership, or that you wish to contact us. This has happened too often, and we grieve lost opportunities to assist a Brother or his wife.If a Brother or his wife dies, we want to honor them and the family as much as possible. We enroll the deceased in the Colorado State Perpetual Memorial Society so that they are remembered at K of C memorial Masses, and a certificate is given to the family. If the family desires, we will arrange a 4th Degree Honor Guard at the funeral, if given enough notice. At the funeral, we also present the family with a certificate of our condolence at the loss of our Brother. If the Brother has K of C insurance, we will notify the agent so that he can assist the family. Finally, we place a Memorial Brick in the Rachel Garden for our deceased Knights and Ladies Auxiliary members. Many of these things are time-sensitive, and the more advance notice we get, the better we can do.So, in your final instructions, funeral pre-planning, with your living will and other important papers, it would be a good idea to place a notice to contact your K of C Council, or keep a notice on your refrigerator or in your wallet. Below is a sample.

Yours in Charity and Fraternity,Ron Krom, PGK, for Knights Konnect
