While we’ve all experienced tragedies in the past, this pandemic is one to “try men’s souls.” We’re close to the end of Lent, and while I truly hope this trying Easter season has brought your families together, we must keep mindful that our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ died on the cross and united us as Christians. This is truly a time for Christian unity as a body of Christ. Let’s not let him (and each other) down. So what’s ahead for our Council? I wish I had the answers. Due to the threat of significant health issues, our monthly meetings are now at a halt as are our planning sessions. President Trump has just suggested a continuance of the “stay home” initiative until at least the end of April. I agree. We have yet to see a peak in the COVID-19 virus. Let’s not get complacent. You all are in my prayers daily. Please keep the faith, retain a positive outlook, and we’ll “weather the storm.” (There’s always a beautiful day at the end of every storm.) Fortunately, most of our functions throughout the year resulted in significant successes. We missed out on the St. Patrick’s Day function and most of the Lenten meals although we are blessed in that we made a significant contribution to our parish prior to our current and worldwide “state of affairs.” A sincere thank you to all who made these events possible. Also, remember, we are at a time when we must create a slate of new officers. Please consider service to your council as many have in the past. We are in dire need of members to come forward; however, it appears it’s often the same members who serve year after year. Let’s give them a rest. At this time, I have no idea when this selection process will occur since our schedules are upside down at the present. One last reminder, please consider praying your rosary daily. Do you read the newsletter? The Council is continuing this contest for members to respond to this question.

Each month a "Question Box" and prize for the month will be posted in the newsletter. Somewhere in the following articles the answer will be provided. To enter the contest you must reply to the editor at [email protected] (Do not reply to email with Newsletter attachment as your answer will be visible to all members). You must submit the exact answer the way it is stated in the newsletter. Please include your full name with your email address. The deadline for each month will be included in the

messages.

The contest prize may vary from month to month. It could be a cash prize, tickets to Council Dinner/Dances or donated items. All entries received from correct responses will be entered in a random drawing to determine a monthly winner. Winners will be notified by email. Prizes will vary each month but will be worth entering the contest.

So, again, do you read the newsletter? Well now you have one more reason to make this a

regular activity you look forward to each month.

Last Month’s Contest Answer

March Contest Question: “Who was Pope during WWII and how long did he lead the

church?”

The exact answer was “Pope Pius XII led the church for 19 years beginning 1939 to 1958

when he died.” It was located in the “Lenten Meal” article on page 9. We received 14

entries from which the winner, Patrick Boland, was drawn. Due to the St. Pat’s dinner being

cancelled, Brother Patrick, will be mailed a $25 gift certificate.

April Newsletter Contest

it?”

Deadline for all entries will be Friday, April 10th. The only entries to be considered will be

Message from Membership Director Brothers,

As I sit here thinking about our current situation it makes me sad. I offer my prayers and thoughts too all that are ill and to all my fellow Knights. Unfortunately we have not been able to interact with each other by attending our Lenten meals, Council meetings, or our Formation Degrees. Hopefully by Aprils end we can resume all of these necessary functions. We must stay strong - we will come thru it.

That does not mean we stop talking to our fellow Catholic Brothers about joining the Knights of Columbus. So far we have not met our quota for the year that ends June 30th. I hope to have a Formation Degree in April. Let’s try to bring in a few new members. Talk us up and tell them - what we do - how we can use their help. Winston Churchill said during WW2 “We owe so much to so few "meaning the British Air force. LET’S KEEP UP OUR GOOD WORK Thank you all again My phone number is 702 379 3025 and my e mail is: [email protected] . Bob Zagby RECRUIT! RECRUIT! RECRUIT! Membership Chairman Form 100s are in the Church Office 1st Degree Team Leader Vivat Jesus

Formation Degree Exemplification Don’t forget – Help recruit Members! The Formation Degree at SJHOM is held the last Saturday of the Month!

At this time all Formation Degrees are postponed until a future date.

Good of the Order

We ask all of your prayers for our daughter Debbie Medina who is battling a severe case of Sjogren’s disease. Her body is destroying her blood cells as the marrow produces them. That requires frequent transfusions. Please pray that these severe effects will subside as there is no cure. Tony & Paula

We ask that you continue praying for the recovery and return to full health of Tony Ruivivar and his wife Karen. They continue to be very active supporters of the council.

Please continue to pray for Brother Darren Horvath and his family. I have no recent update on his condition but at last report he is doing well and is still in California recovering.

Nick & Mary Jane Ciccone wish to thank everyone for the prayers for their grandson Christopher. He is doing much better and his lymphoma is responding well to treatment. Keep the prayers coming, they work.

Ed & Maria Miranda asks for prayers for their son Devin and his friend Talia who have been traveling in areas in Europe where the corona virus is prevalent. Please pray that they are well and that they test negative for any illness.

Please pray for long time member Patrick Boland who has onset Alzheimer’s disease and his wife Joselyn. They are in need of our prayers for comfort and ease in this time of their life.

We also ask everyone to pray for the repose of the soul of Tony Tatalo’s oldest sister Katherine who passed away in Vieste, Italy at the age of 95. Cards of condolence may be sent to Tony at 7129 Mountain Moss St. Las Vegas, NV 89147.

If you or someone you know would like to be on the prayer list or if you know of someone who should be removed from previous prayer lists, please contact the editors of this newsletter until a new Fraternal Chair has volunteered.

Council 10442 Insurance Field agent Stephen Melancon, PGK, FICF (702) 672-1425 [email protected] Brother Knights,

Most of you know me as your Knights of Columbus Field Agent but before that I’m a Brother Knight and as such I wanted to send you a quick note that reflects the posture of the Knights of Columbus and my own commitment to serve you and your family in these unprecedented times. As a framework, I want to employ the five pillars that Supreme Knight Carl Anderson has pointed to as characteristics found in men who, in time of crisis, not only survive but lead. First, we remain rooted in the truth of the faith. We pray for one another, for the sick and the dying, and for the Church and world. In this we remain true to Fr. McGivney’s vision of protecting families within the sure tracks of the Catholic faith. Second, the Knights can be counted on to step into the breach. When disasters strike, the Knights are there with prayer and work, supporting first responders, providing shelter and assistance to those affected. This time is no different. Working together, we remain united and strong. Third, a Knight stays at his post. I understand that you have concerns about health, finances, job security, savings, retirement, and these have only increased in these days. I am here to help allay those concerns and to answer any questions you may have. We are ready to suffer for the good. It has fallen to us agents and our Supreme Council leadership to roll up our sleeves and get to work so we can remain effective as we work remotely and maintain social distance. To that end, we are employing new technology that allows us to meet “virtually,” using a secure video conferencing software. It allows us to see each other, and to share a screen that features forms and other graphics. Finally, a Knight maintains humble confidence. My commitment to you, our members and families, remains steady and is built not primarily on my qualifications but on the strength of our Order, which has grown and strengthened over more than 135 years. Our Order is strong, and our guarantees remain in place. As always, I stand ready to help. If you or anyone you know are in need of assistance of any kind during these trying times, please feel free to contact me at (702) 672-1425 or at [email protected]. Fraternally, Stephen Melancon, PGK, FSCP Field Agent

COUNCIL OFFICERS FOR COLUMBIAN YEAR 2020/2021 BROTHERS:

The council is facing a very real crisis, one that has persisted now for the past 6 to 8 years. We are in desperate need for volunteers to come forward and take a leadership role as a Council Officer. I remember back when this council was forming there were a number of members vying to be the next Grand Knight and volunteering for the offices that would eventually move them up to be in that position. I have been a member of this council for almost 29 years and except for the few years I was out with my heart surgeries I have always been an officer. I joined the Knights to make a difference and the best way to do that is through leadership as an officer. You will find it fulfilling and rewarding.

As you look at the proposed slate of officers below, three positions are being filled by PAST GRAND KNIGHTS. That is not an ideal situation. We need new leadership with new ideas. If we do not have anyone to step forward the council is in serious danger of going inactive. That means we will no longer be able to meet as a council or do anything at parish level as a council which includes social events, meetings etc.

Potential Slate of officers: Grand Knight – PGK Don Thompson Deputy Grand Knight – PGK Chuck McCloskey Chancellor – PGK Bill Koss Advocate – Jim Butman Warden – Dave Richardson Financial Secretary -- OPEN Treasurer -- OPEN Recorder -- OPEN Outside Guard – Tony Tatalo Inside Guard – Mike Castanova

As you can see the top three offices are being filled by past grand knights who have already fulfilled their obligation to serve many times over. We would suggest that you can step up and co-chair a position and that way learn this year from a PGK and then take it on in the next year. Please consider that option.

Our present FINANCIAL SECRETARY Ken Sawyer has agreed to train a new F/S and stay close to help him when he needs it.

Remember the reality for the council is becoming like the dinosaurs, EXTINCT.

Anthony Donofrio, PGK Editor

From The Editor’s Desk

Brothers, I have been running an article about the need for a FRATERNAL CHAIRMAN for about six months now and no one has stepped up to fill this important position. As I have stated a number of times it is a very fulfilling and satisfying position because you are in contact with the members or their families at a time when they most need someone to be there for them. Yet to date again no one is interested in helping the less fortunate or grieving members of our council family. Again I implore someone to please fill this important position. If you have moved or changed your e-mail address or phone number please forward this new information to me so we can update our records. There is valuable information on our website, http://uknight.org/councilsite/?cno=10442. Please visit this site regularly to find out what is happening in your council, CALENDAR OF EVENTS, NEWSLETTERS AND OTHER VALUABLE INFORMATION to keep you informed and active in your council. The council would like to thank Bob Zagby for stepping up to fill in at the DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT position. Bob is important to the council in so many ways and is exactly what I am talking about in the above article on needing volunteers to become officers. Not only did Brother Bob temporarily fill in the DGK position he is also captain of the first degree team and along with all of that Bob is the best MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR in the state and probably the best this council has ever seen. Thanks Bob we need more men like you. Thanks is also in order for PGK Chuck McCloskey for stepping up to be the DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT for the remainder of this year and also into the next year. Holy Roman Emperor Contantine held the first Ecumenical Council in the city of Nicaea in what is now present day Turkey. Chuck is another knight who does multiple jobs for the council. He has been taking care of the meals for about 8 years now along with his other duties. We owe Chuck a debt of gratitude for all he does. It is my understanding that about forty members still have not paid their dues. It is essential that those of you who have not paid do so at once. The supreme council and the state council levy a per capita fee on each member whether they pay their dues or not. The amount of this tax per member is $20.50. That means that the council is responsible for paying over $800.00 for delinquent members. Please pay your dues as the council could be in trouble if it cannot meet its obligation to pay the per capita tax. The total for the council amounts to over $4000.00. We need to be active to continue our much needed and appreciated charity work. Tony Donofrio, PGK Editor [email protected] 702-306-1132

FYI NOTICE

The following information was sent to Auxiliary members but other Council members may be interested in this email from Ken Sawyer:

Ladies, As a semi-retired Tax Professional, I want to share some information with our members, and particular with our Widows. Please feel free to share the top information with anyone you think might need it, including in the newsletter. There are already Scams and Misleading emails popping up aimed primarily at taking advantage of those who have not filed taxes in several years. Do Not fall for these official looking links like:

“Do I have to file to receive a check? “What about those on SS?” “Check to see how much you are eligible to receive”

Fact, for those on SS, with no other income; YES, you will receive these Stimulus funds. Fact, you DO NOT have to file a Tax just to be eligible. BUT it will take longer. The IRS will be checking for those who have filed a 2019 tax, and then those who filed a 2018 tax. Once they have that data, they will be matching it to the SS eligible file, and if no taxes have been filed, they will be sending funds to those remaining individuals, the same way they receive SS payments today. Either a check or direct deposits, but those receiving checks can expect a 2 to 3 week additional delay.

OK Ladies, A SECOND ITEM for your consideration of who I can help in the “I don’t have to file” group. I still do about 30 taxes a year, and I continue to maintain my IRS Preparer (PTIN) Certification each year to e-file to the IRS. As such I would like to extend an offer to e-file the first say 10 KofC Widows’ 2019 tax at no charge. I’ll see how these go & evaluate. This is assuming they are in the “I don’t have to file” group. This offer should speed up their ability to receive those stimulus funds by several months. This offer assumes they still have copies of the SS Benefit Statement (Tax Form SSA-1099) and all other tax forms. Please understand I’m not interested in growing my Tax service, I just know that I have other former clients that haven’t needed to file, that I am now following up with. This is a onetime effort to help our Widows receive the funds ASAP. If you have any questions or know of someone, please feel free to contact me. Call my cell # 702-203-7403 (Not the home #), or email me at [email protected] Ken

News from the Ladies Auxiliary Ladies Auxiliary Knights of Columbus St. Joseph, Husband of Mary Council #10442

Dear Sisters, I hope this newsletter finds all of you healthy. And not going stir crazy being confined to home. I know this is not how we would choose to spend the Lenten season, with churches closed and events around the country cancelled, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still keep in touch. I know our meeting is cancelled for the immediate future, but I emailed a virtual agenda for April when I sent out the minutes. Please read the agenda and send me an email with your comments or anything you would like to add. I found this lovely interpretation of prayer that I thought you would enjoy and a short essay reminding us of what we have. What is Prayer? Prayer doesn’t just happen when we kneel or put our hands together and focus and expect things from God. Thinking positive and wishing good for others is a prayer. When you hug a friend. That’s prayer. When you cook something to nourish family and friends. That’s prayer. When we send off our near and dear ones and say, “Drive safely” or “Be safe.” That’s a prayer. When you are helping someone in need by giving your time and energy. You are praying. When you forgive someone by your heart. That is prayer. Prayer is a vibration. A feeling. A thought. Prayer is the voice of love, friendship, genuine relationships. Prayer is an expression of your silent being. “Keep on Praying Always” (Facebook article from Empaths, Old Souls & Introverts) Something to think about. Read slowly. Listening to music is not cancelled, quality time with our families is not cancelled, reading a book is not cancelled, sharing with friends is not cancelled, singing out loud is not cancelled, laughing has not been cancelled, sharing hope with others has not been cancelled. Let’s embrace what we have. “Inspire Uplift” on Facebook (Courtesy of Jolyn Pinzl) Be Healthy and Happy,

Just a little humor THESE ARE ACTUAL COMPLAINTS RECEIVED BY "THOMAS COOK VACATIONS" FROM DISSATISFIED

CUSTOMERS – submitted by Jackie Katrosits. 1. "On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don't like spicy food." 2. "They should not allow topless sunbathing on the beach. It was very distracting for my husband who just wanted to relax." 3. "We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish." 4. "We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price." 5. "The beach was too sandy. We had to clean everything when we returned to our room." 6. "We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as white but it was more yellow." 7. "It's lazy of the local shopkeepers to siesta in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during 'siesta' time -- this should be banned." 8. "No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared." 9. "Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers." 10. "I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local convenience store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts." 11. "The roads were uneven and bumpy, so we could not read the local guide book during the bus ride to the resort. Because of this, we were unaware of many things that would have made our holiday more fun" 12. "It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair." 13. "I compared the size of our one-bedroom suite to our friends' three-bedroom and ours was significantly smaller." 14. "The brochure stated: 'No hairdressers at the resort.' We're trainee hairdressers and we think they knew and made us wait longer for service." 15. "When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners." 16. "We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning." 17. "It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel."
