Function of knee
• Patella (kneecap): A thick, circular-triangular bone that covers and protects the anterior surface of the knee joint.
• Faces proximally and distally- towards the torso, tilted towards feet.
• Role of patella is knee extension and leverage of femur depending on the increase of angle
• Primarily used for mobility and movement of knee and leg.

Tendons/Muscles• Patella connects to
quadriceps tendon (thigh muscles)
• Patellar tendon connects to the fibula bone to give stability and position to patella
• The femur connects to tibia by the anterior cruciate ligament, cushioned by the meniscus

Complications
• Young athletes, 16-20 years old are more commonly known to have dislocations
• Dislocation- The patella slides out of its position on the knee, causing extreme pain and swelling. Usually caused by a direct blow, increase of (awkward) pressure, or sudden twist of leg.
• The patella usually returns to its position on its own back into the patellofemoral groove with an extension of the leg

At risk of dislocation..
• Lack of balance • Inflammation of the joints• Too much tension on patella: the
ligaments weaken and begin to tear• Trochlear dysplasia: Is caused by the
flattening of the trochlear groove because the dislocation of the knee has scraped or flattened unnaturally- there is nothing to hold the patella in place

Surgery Procedures
• Patellar shave- Shaving or removing uneven surfaces of patella bone caused by arthritus or dislocation
• ACL reconstruction• Articular Cartilage Restoration• Knee Arthroscopy• Meniscal Transplant surgery

Recovery
• Weeks or months of physical therapy• Excessive stretching/strengthening
of quads• Avoiding stressful or pressured
actions
