HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY SERVICES (HDCS) has been working to glorify God’s Kingdom by working in the three major areas of health, community development and education. Our projects include the running of two hospitals in Lamjung and Rukum, where we provide quality and affordable rural health care services to thousands of people who have limited access to medical facilities. We also work with communities

on a grassroots level. Our community radio broadcasts on matters like health, education, sanitation, and agriculture to help improve lives of those living in rural Nepal. As for education, our Asha Bal

Bikas Sewa serves physically and mentally disabled children, and through KATHMANDU

INTERNATIONAL STUDY

CENTRE (KISC) we are able to provide a positive educational experience for children from all over the world while they are in Nepal. The Lord has done wonders and we are eager to see what else He has planned for us!

Faithfully,

Dr. Tirtha B. Thapa, Founder and Executive Director of HDCS

KISC is a diverse community: students from 4 to 18 years old; local staff and those from overseas; those at the beginning to those at the end of their careers; paid and volunteers; hailing from diverse religious backgrounds. Through all these differences it is inspiring for us to experience a community based on the KISC values of love, justice, grace, community and excellence.

Before the establishment of KISC many mission families had to leave the country for the sake of their children’s education. KISC provides K-13 education with UK and USA certificates at graduation. More importantly, our hope and prayer is for the students to graduate with an understanding of who they are and how they can impact their world for the Glory of God.

KISC EQUIP, with its teacher training programme implemented in a number of Nepali schools, helps raise the education standard across Nepal and aims for the holistic development of the whole community.

It is a privilege as directors to be involved in running this school as well as the teacher training programme for Nepali schools

through EQUIP. We appreciate all that everyone invests into supporting our staff to provide an excellent education for the students, the majority of whom come from mission families who in turn work hard to positively impact this beautiful country of Nepal.

We would feel honoured if you would choose to be involved through supporting us in prayer, through volunteering or donating towards some of our projects. Thank you for taking the time to read our brochure.

Faithfully,

Angus Douglas, Development Director Khim Kandel, EQUIP/TEC Director Daniel Parnell, School Director (left to right in the photo)

NEPAL is a small, landlocked Asian country nestled between China and India. Boasting large mountains and the highest peak in the world, Mt. Everest, Nepal is one of the most beautiful nations in the world. Despite being rich in natural resources, Nepal remains one of the poorest South Asian countries. Its mountainous topography makes development work difficult and costly. This, combined with a recent 10-year political turmoil has left a legacy of underdevelopment. The country ranks 145 (out of 187) on the United Nations’ Human Development Index scale. The index measures a country’s achievements in terms of health, income and education.

K I S C (KATHMANDU

INTERNATIONAL

STUDY CENTRE) was born out of education

needs of the children of the mission workers who came to provide humanitarian assistance to Nepal after the opening of the

country’s borders to foreigners in early 1950s. Established by

United Mission to Nepal (UMN) and International Nepal Fellowship

(INF) in 1987, KISC has become a reputed international Christian school in Nepal. In 2007, the Nepali NGO, Human Development and Community Services (HDCS), was awarded the ownership of KISC by the Government of Nepal’s Ministry of Education. God has richly blessed KISC for nearly 30 years and we want to share the blessing with others in Nepal.

EQUIP (Education Quality Improvement Programme) was started in 2007 to allow KISC to share blessings and help transform education in Nepal through practical teacher training. The programme equips teachers with tools and skills necessary to develop problem solving and creative thinking as well as good character in students. It also works with the whole school community to encourage a mindset that everyone has an important role towards improving education in Nepal.

TEC (Transformational Education College) is KISC EQUIP’s answer to God’s calling to grow EQUIP into a teacher training college. The TEC will provide Nepali teachers with the opportunities to build on and extend the basic training they have received by offering intensive, practical and high quality courses and qualifications.

KISC is a K-13 international school in Nepal with both Middle States Association (MSA, American) and Cambridge International Examinations (British) accreditations.

KISC mainly uses a British curriculum with international components. All our students receive an American High School

Diploma on graduation. This allows students to easily transfer to their home-countries and to other schools and universities around the world. At KISC, approximately 82% of the students are from mission families and the other 18% are students seeking an international education. KISC is a culturally diverse community with over 20 different nationalities represented by our 300+ students and staff. The class sizes are small - no larger than 22 students per class - to enhance learning and to encourage more personal student/staff relationships. There are around 40 full-time academic staff, 20 part-time teachers and teaching assistants, and 40 Nepali and foreign operations staff. KISC relies on volunteers to keep tuition fees as low as possible.

KISC PASSION STATEMENTThe Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to

proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,

to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God,

to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion — to bestow

on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning,

and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of

righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor. ISAIAH 61:1-3

KISC MISSION STATEMENT“To provide quality education, primarily for the Christian mission community and Nepali national teachers, based on the sovereignity of Christ. Through the KISC international K-13 school and the EQUIP national teacher training programme, students and staff will positively impact their world.”

KISC VISION STATEMENT: “To be living witnesses of Christ’s love through

excellent education”

At KISC we aim to live according to the KISC values of LOVE, GRACE, COMMUNITY, JUSTICE

and EXCELLENCE. We believe each student is an individual made in the image of God. Our learning process focuses on understanding a Biblical Worldview. We aim to develop caring, critical, creative and collaborative thinking, and we aim for KISC students to be deeply rooted and established in knowledge and wisdom. Students are encouraged and given opportunities to develop their God given gifts and talents through as many aspects of KISC life as possible. We wish for our students to discover their identity and therefore their purpose in life. We recognize that education is an active partnership between parents, students and staff. Through our mutual efforts, we want our students to develop the skills, attitudes and spirituality they need to successfully meet the challenges of our rapidly changing world and bring good to others.

“KISC is like a second home to me. When I leave, I’ll be renting it out to my juniors and people to come.”

“KISC is like a painting: everyone is different but we all need each other to make a masterpiece.”

“The best thing about KISC is the diversity. You cannot be picked on for

being different because everyone is.”

“KISC is a secure, protected place where all ideas are respected, heard and listened to.

It is very positively influenced by leaders and fellow students by setting a good example.”

“KISC challenges me to achieve my fullest but be myself.”

“The five days of ECD (Early Childhood Development) training by KISC EQUIP boost up my confidence in teaching and communicating with others. Now I can share my ideas during staff meetings and other gatherings. I lacked creative ways of teaching. Now, I am able to teach through storytelling, play, using teaching materials and rhymes. The children in my class want to come to school even during the weekends.”

KISC EQUIP seeks to establish kitchen gardens in each of its partner schools. Students and staff will be involved in yielding nutritious produce out of the land to provide free meals for needy students. At the same time they will be getting hands-on experience in agriculture, science, nutrition and health education.

KISC EQUIP has developed a manual containing basic farming techniques which will be given to teachers in addition to training provided by KISC EQUIP teacher trainers. So far, KISC EQUIP has trained teachers and students in two of its partner schools. These two schools now have functional kitchen gardens and are excited to share their newly-gained skills with their neighborhood and wider communities.

FUTURE GOALS

Over the last 8 years, KISC EQUIP has been providing holistic education training to teachers and school communities in different project areas in rural and regional Nepal. We also work in close coordination with the concerned government agencies and school communities to ensure transparency and accountability. The programme is committed to working with the schools for at least five

years in order to build a good relationship and trust with the school communities. The EQUIP Team consists of experienced Nepali as well as foreign mission teacher trainers with an attitude of servanthood. KISC EQUIP teacher trainers visit each partner school several times a year to offer training in their local contexts and do follow up after the training to encourage and ensure the implementation of the

skills gained in trainings. We are committed to placing our teacher trainers in our project areas so that they are easily available to meet with the teachers to support and encourage them. KISC EQUIP also provides an opportunity to mission teams from overseas to come and serve the school communities. The length of the service can be a few days to several weeks.

TECKISC EQUIP is planning to expand its training to provide

a year-long college course. Through partnering with

Government and Educational Organisations, EQUIP will

pilot the certificate training in Education in Kathmandu

from the current site. Other centres will be opened in

rural areas to allow for high quality teacher training to be

accessible around the country.

NEW SITEKISC has outgrown its current rented site and the aim is

to purchase a new property. Additional space for offices

and sports facilities have recently been rented but they

do not provide the long term security that would be

beneficial for the development of KISC, EQUIP and TEC.

The hope is to purchase a site to develop a purpose-built,

earthquake-resistant school with additional facilities.
