Last week saw the performance of this year’s High School musical production Aladdin. Audi-ences were whisked away to a world of enchantment and flying carpets as they watched Alad-din’s plight to woo the fair Princess Jasmine.

Scripture of the week: ”You shall rise before the gray headed and honor the presence of an old man, and fear your God: I am the LORD.” Leviticus 19:32

A Game to Learn about Honour - “Aahh and Whoops”

Have you ever driven in the car with your children and they get a little tired of the long trip? Well, here is an inter-esting and enjoyable game that can be played over several hours or a few days. You may choose to play this game on a car trip or when hanging out at home together on a Sat-urday afternoon. The game is the “Whoops” and “Ahhh” Game. Playing it can be a lot of fun and it helps children recognise common forms of speech that aren’t very hon-ouring. Choose a few hours when you will all be together interacting.

How to play: Announce the beginning of the game and explain how it is played. “We will look for five types of dishonouring speech: arguing, boasting, whining, complain-ing, talking too much and being bossy. Anyone who hears dishonouring speech from children or adults says “Whoops!” Everyone then tries to guess which type of dishonouring speech they heard. The family then works together to offer honouring suggestions.

For example, when John says, “Are we there yet,” in that whiny voice, his sister, Karen might say “Whoops!” You can identify that as whining and suggest that John ask his ques-tion in a more honouring and polite way. At the same time, everyone is on the lookout for honouring speech that in-cludes praise, gratefulness, compliments and affirmation. If Karen says, “Thanks Dad, for taking us on this trip”, eve-ryone playing can say, “Ahhh.” To keep it fun, you might occasionally say something dishonouring on purpose to earn a “Whoops!” You might say, “I sure am a good driver.” This will earn you a “Whoops!” for boasting followed by an inter-esting discussion of your alternatives.

Strategy for the week: Next time you are in the car driving, try the game “Aahh and Whoops”. Be sure to set an end time to the game. Although the evaluation can be helpful for a time, too much analysis can get irritat-ing and loses its fun.

“Oh to be young again!”

Noah’s Ark youngsters celebrated the joy of learn-ing last week as they enthusiastically explored their learning environment. With the help of several mums, face painting was a highlight as well as bubble blow-ing, water balloon fishing and dancing. The creative juices were flowing as children expressed ideas and made meaning of their play world.

Of ThanksgivingA Day to say Thank You to those who make a difference in

our lives and communities.Last Saturday was National Day of Thanksgiving. On As-

sembly last Wednesday I encouraged the students to take the time to stop and think what they should be grateful for in their lives. I started by thanking the majority of students who come to school each day with a positive attitude, a mindset to get it right and just do their best. They are the young people our staff appreciate and who make our school the great school it is.

Developing an Attitude of Gratitude takes our thinking from being a ‘glass half empty to glass half full’ mentality. To start and finish the day by thinking on what we can be grateful for changes our perspective on life. Here are just some thoughts I found to give an example of one person’s thinking on thankfulness.

Be Thankful• Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire. If you did, what would there be to look forward to? • Be thankful when you don’t know something. For it gives you the opportunity to learn. • Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow. • Be thankful for your limitations. Because they give you opportunities for improvement. • Be thankful for each new challenge. Because it will build your strength and character. • Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valu-able lessons. • Be thankful when you’re tired and weary. It means you’ve made a difference. • It’s easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks. • Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles and they can become your blessings.[Author Unknown -- from ‘Aiken Drum’ ([email protected])]

I am sure you have already started to think about the things you can be thankful in your life. It is important to take the time to thank the people in our lives who make such a difference for us.

Happy parenting. And so it is. Maintain good relation-ships. Bring heaven to earth. Fear prevents, faith prevails. God bless. True meaning of Easter. Celebrate the risen Christ. Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums. Find the joy. Defend the Australian way of life. Encourage goal setting. Be thankful. ~ Rhonda Bevan, Head of Secondary

Student BehaviourAs we know the majority of our students demon-

strate exemplary behaviour at King’s at all times. How-ever the recent fad highlighted in the media known as “planking” has encouraged a small minority of stu-dents in schools to engage in silly behaviour.

Students have been told in assembly that they must not get involved in this potentially dangerous activity and should not encourage others to do so either. There will be strong consequences for any student involved in this type of behaviour.

We always endeavour to educate our students to think about the possible dangers and the consequences for their own behaviour and hope they choose wisely.

~ Kieron Vallance, Dean of Students

New Hair Policy for Boys Effective from Semester 2, 2011

Hair must be tidy, short, clear of the collar, ears and eyebrows. All haircuts must be of a conservative style. The spirit of the code is that haircuts should not follow temporary fads or be attention-seeking. A very small amount of hair product may be used if it helps the student to comply with the code. Hair colour should be natural looking. Students will be excluded from school until hair is acceptable. A final decision on hair will always be at the discretion of senior staff.

What Is Your Attitude?Quote from “Walk in Faith” by Ray McCauley

But Jesus said to them “A prophet is not without hon-our except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.” Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick peo-ple and healed them. And He marvelled because of their unbelief. Mark 6:4-6

The hardest people to minister to are often your own family.

Verse 5 tells us that He could do no mighty work in His own home town, it does not say He would do no mighty work. The original Greek here says that He could do no mighty works except heal a few minor ailments. It was the people’s attitudes which prevented the power of God from flowing. Likewise today, even if Jesus Himself were to appear, some would fold their arms, close their minds and protest that first they wanted to see whether or not all this “stuff” works! Jesus could do no mighty works because of their unbelief. Note that Jesus never marvelled at the miracles of God. The only recorded instances which caused Him to marvel were people’s faith (Mat 8:10, Luke 7:9), or conversely their lack of faith or their unbelief (Mark 6:6).

Let us be believing people. Do not harden your heart.

PrimaryPrep to Year 3 Fun Run

On a beautify autumn day our Prep, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 students put their best foot for-ward and competed in the annual Fun Run. Fol-lowing weeks of preparation during PE lessons, the students were keen and eager to take part.

This was the first sporting event of this kind for our Prep students so they were very excited to be part of the day, so with butterflies in their tummies and smiles on their faces our students took to the Fun Run course with gusto on Friday May 27. Lead by our gallant Year 7 students and encouraged from the rear by our very special ‘surprise’ clowns the students completed the run like seasoned athletes.

Our students have been taught to look at physi-cal activity positively and enthusiastically and to give their best efforts, regardless of their ability.

We would like to commend all of your young athletes for competing so well and being sup-portive of each other at the Fun Run.

We would also like to acknowledge the achieve-ments of the following young athletes for finish-ing in the top three of their year level:

Commonwealth GamesDemii Maher–Smith has been one of twenty

seven selected to represent Australia at the Junior Commonwealth games to be held on the Isle of Man in September. Demii will compete in the Triple Jump in the U/18 age group. This is a truly sensational achievement and we wish Demii all the very best as she prepares for this International event. Demii is to be admired for the way she uses her natural ability and com-bines this with dedication and hard work. Well done, Demii.

Australian Rules – State SuccessWe congratulate both Dylan

Mutu and Billy O’Donnell who last week represented South Coast at the U/15 Queensland Schoolboys Championships. Their team did fantastically well and unfortunately just lost the grand final.

Billy then went on to be named in the state team and that was a remarkable achieve-ment. We congratulate both Dylan and Billy who have achieved to such an elite level. Well done, boys!

Golfing Success We congratulate both Kanami

Iwama and Dee Dee Russell who qualified for the Regional Golf Finals on Monday that were held at Lakelands. We will re-port on the girl’s progress next week.

Ricky Ro continued his suc-cess in the Greg Norman series with his handicap of 5 he was the net winner in the U/17 event at Southport. Dee Dee Russell continued her fantastic form with a win in her age group as well. Great work!

Queensland U/19 Soccer ChampionshipsWe congratulate Veneesha Robertson who has

been selected as a shadow player for the U/19 Queensland School Girls’ Team. Veneesha, play-ing in the defence for the Southcoast team, made it all the way to the state final where her team was narrowly beaten. This is a great result as she is still only in Year 11. Well done, Veneesha!

APS Finals DayFor the first time, APS will hold a finals day to

culminate the Winter season. All teams will play–off on this day against the teams next to them on the final table. More information to follow but the games will be played at central venues. At this stage a number of teams are looking to at least make the grand finals.

PrimaryAPS Rugby Cup Year 5

At the beginning of the cup the boys came in feeling ex-cited and confident. To cheer us on and support us were; Isaac’s dad - Mr Hawkins, Andrews dad - Mr Smith - who also supplied the drinks, Mrs Oswald, Mrs Bohlsen, Mr Nicholsen, Mr Davis, Mr Genge and of course our awesome coach - Mr Bird. Our first game was a battle to the end against All Saints, but unfortunately All Saints squeezed in a try in the last couple of minutes of the game. Our second game was an easy one against AB Patterson and we ended up with a stun-ning victory of 6 tries to 1. Our third game against Somerset was a very close game for King’s which we unfortunately lost 2 tries to 1 - this automatically put us out of the final. We still fought to the end and beat Comera Anglican College 6 - 1. We didnt win the cup, but we all tried our hardest and finished 5th overall. Well done boys!!

~ Isaac Hawkins, Sam Shaw and Luka Lewis

Year 6Last Thursday the Year 6 rugby team coached by Mr. Kear-

ney competed in the APS Rugby Cup. We won our first three games against A.B. Paterson, All Saints and the Grand final winners of last year, Somerset College. We made it to the semi-finals but got knocked out by Saint Stephens 2-0. All the boys were very upset, but still we had to play another match for 3rd place, in which we beat All Saints 3-1. All the boys are all ready for next year.

~ Jayvin Topp

Year 7The Year 7 rugby team took part in the annual APS Cup

held at All Saints Anglican College. We beat Trinity 56 - 0, drew 12 all with Somerset, lost 7 - 0 to Emmanuel and lost 21 - 7 to All Saints. The team placed 5th overall on the day. It was an extremely enjoyable day with Xavier Toia the player of the tournament for King’s. We also had four play-ers from our team selected for the APS Rugby Representa-tive Team.
