Early Learning ProgramsParenting with Power

Scripture of the week: Trust in the LORD and do good. Dwell in the land and feed on His faithfulness. Psalm 37:2

Honouring your children by faithA problem arises when a person’s worth or value is not

easily apparent. A father might dishonour his child because he doesn’t appreciate her and even considers her opinions and actions foolish. He may overreact, pull away or make sarcastic remarks. A mother may react with anger when treated poorly by her son and over time will lose any sense of value she once had for him.

It is especially harmful when parents give up or become hostile in response to their children’s rejection. This can be a serious parenting mistake that may contribute to young people searching for different friends and authorities who will listen and accept them, especially when they are teen-agers.

I remember confronting and correcting my teenage daughter once, just to hear her angry and disrespectful response of, “Get out of my room!” When your children’s worth or value is not easily apparent, a parent must learn to honour their child by faith. Honouring our children, even when they behave in a completely unlovable way, is one of the most difficult skills when parenting. It is helpful to look at this issue from God’s perspective. Each person has intrin-sic value to God and is significant and worthwhile to Him. Often when you start with God’s perspective you recognize the value of even the most difficult person. Stories abound of parents who have continued to be faithful even when all seemed hopeless, only to find their child to make major steps of improvement.

Teenagers formulate a worldview and opinions about life. When parents dish it out the same way teens do, their chil-dren often get hurt. As parents, we must continually look for ways to challenge our children to maturity without harming our sometimes fragile relationship with them. Teens have a way of treating you badly one minute and asking for money the next. Sometimes we must just say something like, “I’d like to take you to shopping but I feel uncomfortable about the way you asked me to ‘Get out of your room’ an hour ago. I would like to deal with that problem first before we go on living life as normal.” This way, your child feels they are still honoured and loved by you and usually respond by honouring you as the parent.

Strategy for the week: Challenge your teenagers, but continually do it in honouring ways. In the end, you will preserve relationship and motivate growth at the same time.

Self-expression, Noah’s Ark style

Noah’s Ark children have been experiencing varied forms of artistic and cultural expression including that of the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community. They are discovering that we can express ourselves with mixed media (paint & clay) and through music and dance (tapping sticks). As we experience differ-ent ways of doing things we start to appreciate and value diversity.

Life. Success. Happiness.

Talking with friends on the weekend, we were discussing the importance of having an attitude of gratitude, forget-ting self and seeking to help others - whether it be to let someone in in front of you in a line of traffic, being thankful for each new day, or speaking happily with the checkout chick and letting her know that her job is important.

SUCCESSThe most important single ingredient in the formula for

success is knowing how to get along with people.

In humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:3,4

In Bible Power for Successful Living, Norman Vincent Peale tells of a man he calls Jeb. Early in his life, Jeb was so miserable that he attempted to kill himself by drinking poison. He succeeded only in burning his lips. When he re-covered, his first thought was negative, I can’t even kill my-self. Then a different thought took over, Perhaps God has spared me for a purpose. From that time on, Jeb decided it was his purpose in life to make others happy. Everywhere he went for the next thirty years, Jeb left a trail of smiles and sunshine. He handed everyone he met a business card on which he had printed this message:

The Way To HappinessKeep your heart free from hate,

your mind free from worry.Live simply; expect little; give much;

fill your life with love; scatter sunshine.Forget self.

Think of others, and do as you would be done by.Try it for a week - you will be surprised.

Dr Peale said Jeb was one of the happiest men that he had ever met.

In your goals for success, have you included any goals that will help others find happiness?

The truth is that all of us attain the greatest success and happiness possible in this life whenever we use our native capacities to their greatest extent. Smiley Blanton

Happy parenting. And so it is. Maintain good relation-ships. Bring heaven to earth. Fear prevents, faith prevails. God bless. True meaning of Easter. Celebrate the risen Christ. Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums. Find the joy. Defend the Australian way of life. Encourage goal setting. Be thankful. Bloom where you are. Develop resilience. Too blessed to be stressed. Take time. Encourage a positive at-titude. Never quit. Guidance. Help others. ~ Rhonda Bevan, Head of Secondary

Try hard!Quote from Power New Testament

You do not have to try hard to get God to love you - he loved you so that you would try hard! How much does God love you? Spread out your hands as wide as you can. That much! God sent His son to the cross so that in the bloody sacrifice of Jesus, you would be forgiven! Respond to that love in gratitude. Try hard! “Christ sacrificed His life’s blood to set us free, which means that our sins are now forgiven. Christ did this because God’s gift of undeserved grace to us. God has great wisdom and understanding.” Ephesians 1:7-8

Year 5 Camp ReportThis year Year 5 went to Maroon Dam for our 3 day survi-

vor camp. We stayed at a campsite called Camp Lake Fire, which was named that way because in the morning when the sun is shining on the lake, it looks like it is all on fire.

When we arrived we were given the rules and regulations for the campsite and then we had to put our tents up, which was really fun. This was to show how we all worked together as a team.

We were split into 5 teams and had to make our own team flags out of fabric and paints. We did many activities over the 3 days including archery, fishing, canoeing, raft building and milk crate climbing. We had to make lots of our own meals and light our campfire. After tribal council we toasted marshmallows and shrunk the wrappers in the fire.

The second night we had a huge storm and blackout. We

all got really soaked, but still had fun. The storm filled up all the rainwater tanks which was lucky as that’s all the water available to drink while you camp there.

Raft building ended with most of us falling into the water. Archery was good for our team as we won. Canoeing taught us to follow an obstacle course and some of us ran into trees.

The A team were good at fishing and caught 12 fish. The Gladiators won the milk crate climb. The Warriors won the canoeing. The Blue Tongues won the activities with the most points and received McDonalds vouchers. The Ulti-mate Survivor was won by Tahlua and Jack.

Devotions were our favourite part of camp. We were all touched by the Lord and have returned much closer to God. Mr Malcolm came to visit us on the first night and we played games and sang songs. We would recommend this camp to future students.
