Self-Learning ProgramWeek 7: Evaluating in BRT

Levels 5-6

• Previous lesson’s homework

• Students’ presentations

Simsim
(Approximate duration: 15 minutes)T asks each student to submit her/his homework and present them in front of the class. Each student will be given about 30 seconds to talk about: 1. the homework's topic2. the reason behind choosing one task (topic) instead of the others Rationale: 1- prepares ss to acquire needed skills for the presentation of their final project. 2- encourages ss to be selective based on clear objectives (e.g. it is easy, challenging, interesting, I like drawing……etc.)

Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy

Simsim
T reviews the learning pyramid with the ss and shows which level of thinking they are going to learn this week. T elicits some answers about ‘evaluating’ and then proceeds explaining the topic. For teachers : Evaluating domain in BRT involves learning how to asses, analyze, hypothesize and evaluate. By the end of the task, students should be able to review and critique a piece of art or work. Awarding marks should be guided by rubric and mark schemes.

Lesson Objectives

1- Improve critical analysis through evaluation

2- Improve self-learning skills by using critical analysis and inference techniques

Simsim
T needs to explain the lesson's objectives.

You are a juror…Guilty or not Guilty?

Jack is a responsible and hard working individual. However, he has always struggled to make ends meet having no proper education and could only work menial jobs. Having reached his advanced age and with no retirement schemes, Jack struggled to find employment after he was shown the boot in his previous job being told that he was too old to work as a construction labourer. Jack would not have worried so much had it been only for himself, but make matters worse; he was also responsible for his three orphaned grandchildren. One bitterly cold winter night, Jack decided he had to find a solution. The logs were completely burned and they ate their last morsel of food in the morning. Looking at his cold and starving grandchildren huddled near the dying fire, Jack ventured out. Walking, he saw the huge mansion in the corner. Jack wasted no time; after all, he only will take what is needed to buy food for his grandchildren. Jack left with only the $60 dollars he found on the key pot leaving valuable paintings and jewellery worth millions of dollars. Unfortunately, the mansion’s camera caught Jack’s image and he was incarcerated for theft and robbery. Jack is waiting for the verdict. Do you think Jack is guilty? Give sound reasoning for your answers.

What is RAFT?

A RAFT is a creative writing task. RAFT stands for:

R= Role - Who is the writer/speaker in the text?

A= Audience – Who is the text for?

F= Format – What type of text is it? A letter? A poem?

T= Topic – What is the topic sentence or main point of the text?

RAFT Review Taken from: www.earth.uni.edu/EECP/mid/mod3_la.html

What? You need more gas? I just gave you your gas allowance! You cannot continue to use your gas foolishly. Gas doesn't grow on trees, you know. Where does all your gas go anyway? If you would drive 100 kilometres per hour on the highway instead of putting the pedal to the metal, you would not be draining me for every bit of gas I have. If you would check the air pressure in your tires once a week, you might be able to put your extra gas in the spare bank...I mean tank. And another thing, get rid of those spoilers on the back of your car. What a drag! You would have plenty of gas and would not cause me to have a pump attack if the spoilers were gone. And while we are on the subject, why don't you ride that nice bike of yours occasionally. You are really getting lazy! You are making more and more short trips on my power rather than using your own. Why not give your car (and the environment) a brake for awhile? Go park your car in the garage. You're grounded for two weeks!

Answer the following questions to review the RAFT :

1. What is the role in the text?2. Who is the audience?3. What is the format?4. What is the topic of the text?5. Is the language formal or informal?6. Do you think the role’s tone and choice of language have a strong

effect on readers? Explain.7. Describe the text’s imagery by choosing 5 words and commenting

on the effects these words contribute to the overall message the text conveys.

8. Did you like this RAFT? Explain.

Simsim
Pair or Group Work: Text-based critical analysis and language appreciation learningT discusses the questions and provides clarifications to students should they have any queries. T assembles students in pairs or groups. T asks students to read the text silently and work in groups to answer the RAFT questions on the slide. Answer:Role = Audience = Format = Topic =(Comment: I suggest this RAFT to be a class work wherein the questions will be answered with full assistance of the teacher and answers are written on the board in order to provide an example on how critical-response questions should be tackled.)
