You are a juror…Guilty or not Guilty?

Jack is a responsible and hard working individual. However, he has always struggled to make ends meet having no proper education and could only work menial jobs. Having reached his advanced age and with no retirement schemes, Jack struggled to find employment after he was shown the boot in his previous job being told that he was too old to work as a construction labourer. Jack would not have worried so much had it been only for himself, but make matters worse; he was also responsible for his three orphaned grandchildren. One bitterly cold winter night, Jack decided he had to find a solution. The logs were completely burned and they ate their last morsel of food in the morning. Looking at his cold and starving grandchildren huddled near the dying fire, Jack ventured out. Walking, he saw the huge mansion in the corner. Jack wasted no time; after all, he only will take what is needed to buy food for his grandchildren. Jack left with only the $60 dollars he found on the key pot leaving valuable paintings and jewellery worth millions of dollars. Unfortunately, the mansion’s camera caught Jack’s image and he was incarcerated for theft and robbery. Jack is waiting for the verdict. Do you think Jack is guilty? Give sound reasoning for your answers.

What is RAFT?

A RAFT is a creative writing task. RAFT stands for:

R= Role - Who is the writer/speaker in the text?

A= Audience – Who is the text for?

F= Format – What type of text is it? A letter? A poem?

T= Topic – What is the topic sentence or main point of the text?

What? You need more gas? I just gave you your gas allowance! You cannot continue to use your gas foolishly. Gas doesn't grow on trees, you know. Where does all your gas go anyway? If you would drive 100 kilometres per hour on the highway instead of putting the pedal to the metal, you would not be draining me for every bit of gas I have. If you would check the air pressure in your tires once a week, you might be able to put your extra gas in the spare bank...I mean tank. And another thing, get rid of those spoilers on the back of your car. What a drag! You would have plenty of gas and would not cause me to have a pump attack if the spoilers were gone. And while we are on the subject, why don't you ride that nice bike of yours occasionally. You are really getting lazy! You are making more and more short trips on my power rather than using your own. Why not give your car (and the environment) a brake for awhile? Go park your car in the garage. You're grounded for two weeks!
