Page 3 The first speaker Dr Roland discussed on the above model of the process of strategic plan which
comprises of a few stages namely situational analysis followed by establishing mission and vision,
from here we can develop strategic goals with action plans. Once Action plans were executed,
monitoring and improvement need to be considered to close the cycle. For JU strategic planning SRI
had completed the Situational Analysis stage and the data has been collected, processed and
analyzed. They used focus group interviews comprised of JU leaders / top management, faculty
members, staff and students to get the appropriate data.
The second speaker Dr Christ Hill discussed briefly on the findings of the data collected. In general,
they found out the results were positive, consistent with the general expectations from strategic
point of view thus JU can move forward to plan and implement the strategic directions.
The third speaker, Mrs Ophelia Yeung discussed on PESTLE and SWOT Analysis they used in the
process of data they gathered. PESTLE stands for Political, Economical, Social, Technological, Legal
and Environmental analysis and SWOT stands for Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats
analysis. Both of these analyses (PESTLE and SWOT) have to be considered to produce a reliable
and implementable strategic planning.
SRI decided to revisit the mission and vision of Jazan University and came out with three strategic
directions that need to be developed and implemented to achieve the vision of the university
Following are SRI suggestions for vision, mission and strategic directions of Jazan University.
Jazan University will be a gateway to the future for the region and the kingdom, recognized
nationally and internationally for relevant research, high-‐quality graduates, and service that deliver
social and economic impacts to the community.
• Produce internationally recognized research and new knowledge that meet the needs of
the region, the Kingdom, and the world

Careful analysis of the PESTLE and SWOT above, combined with the revised mission and vision,
yields three strategic directions or goals for Jazan University:
• Build world class management
• Achieve intellectual excellence
• Deliver social and economic impacts
1. The importance of jobs descriptions in Jazan University.
2. Must be able to distinguish or define the roles between centralization or decentralization of
university management.
3. What is the process that needs to be considered in the implementation and monitoring of
strategic planning of Jazan University.
4. Not much has been mentioned about university core values in the discussion.
5. The importance of incorporating a change management team in the university that needs to
be set up for the implementation of strategic planning.
The meeting achieved its objectives and more discussion in details will be continued in the two-‐day
workshop at Hayatt Hotel beginning on the following day.
