Anti-Semitic violence has brokenout in Bessarabia, Southern Russia.

A newspaper in Kishineff recentlyinflamed the local populace againstthe Jewish population by publishingthe familiar European fable that Jewsmurder Christian children whilecarrying out their religious rituals.

The Vice-Governor of Kishineff, who is also the press censor of thedistrict, refused to interfere. He madeno effort to prevent the publication ofthese inflammatory falsehoods

The massacring of Jews and thepillaging of the Jewish quarterfollowed, and the police, instead ofattempting to protect the victims, hounded on the rioters to furtheroutrage.

Fifteen streets in Kishineff weresacked and 4000 Jewish familiesrendered homeless. Children wereflung into the streets out of thewindows of their homes. Manywomen were raped and then horriblymutilated.

A Russian official report on theoutrages admits that 700 houses and600 shops were pillaged, and that 43persons were killed and 474wounded.

Intense indignation has beenaroused amongst the Jewishcommunity in New York. They haveset up a relief fund to assist thesufferers in Russia, which is beingwarmly supported by Christians aswell.

Meanwhile in Melbourne a groupof concerned Jewish gentlemen iscurrently organising a similar appeal. This newspaper will acknowledge anysubscriptions forwarded to it.(Edited from reports in The Age,throughout May, 1903.)

Despite the situation as reported in the story opposite,The Bulletin published this unsympathetic cartoon,

Black prisoner roasted todeath by whites in U.S.A.

American telegrams report a sen-sational case of negro lynching in theState of Delaware.

At Wilmington a negro was con-fined in the workhouse cells on acharge of assaulting and murderingthe daughter of a local clergyman.

Racial feeling among the white in-habitants of the district was deeplyand strongly aroused. Four thousandmen assembled and stormed theworkhouse in order to secure the

negro, whom the civil authorities re-fused to surrender to lynch law.

The murderer was brought out toa public place, chained to a stake, androasted to death before a great crowd.

Elsewhere the American govern-ment has offered $5000 to the fami-lies of two lynched migrant Italiansin exchange for the killers’ freedom. The Italian government is protesting. (Edited from The Age, May 11 andJune 25, 1903.)

Car race stoppedafter 8 deaths

The international motor car racebetween Paris and Madrid, whichcommenced on 24th May, wasresponsible for a shocking series offatalities.

The race, organised by theautomobile clubs of France andSpain, created huge interestthroughout the south-west of France.

In the capital 300,000 Parisianspicnicked on Saturday night along theAvenue du Bois de Boulogne and allthe way to Versailles, nearly ten milesaway, to witness the start of the race.

Between Paris and Bordeaux, over 300 miles, eight people werekilled — five competitors, one soldier,a woman and a child.

In addition many spectators alongthe roadside were hit and injured.

A horrible accident took place inthe case of one of the Englishcompetitors. His car overturned, causing the petrol to ignite. Themotorist was burned to death beforeassistance could be rendered.

The first automobilist to reachBordeaux was Gabriel, a Frenchcompetitor, on a 90-horse powerMors car, who covered the distance

in five hours 13 minutes. His averagespeed was 60 miles an hour, andoccasionally he attained as high a rateas 100 mph. The second man wasLouis, another Frenchman, driving aRenault.

However, only 68 of the 223starters succeeded in reachingBordeaux.

In view of the disaster the Frenchand Spanish Governments bannedthe race from continuing.

It is estimated that France will nowlose £2 million because of the event’scollapse, money which would havebeen spent by visitors, purchasersand competitors.

Since the race was called off, there have been two more deaths, bringing the total to ten.

Marcel Renault, winner of lastyear’s race from Paris to Vienna, dieda few days later from his injuries.

The tenth victim, Loraine Barron, died yesterday. While travelling at 80mph, his motor crashed into a treeand capsized, after swerving to avoidrunning over a dog on the road.(Compiled from The Age, May 26, 28,June 18, 1903.)

There’s one section in Australia that can’t quite understand“Society’s” Jap-worship.

Japanese navysquadronvisits Australia

The Japanese naval squadronhas left Adelaide, continuing its touraround Australia.

Rear-Admiral Kanamura and hisflag lieutenants attended a theatreparty on their last night, then rejoinedthe flagship next morning.

The Admiral considers Australia “avery nice country, with very nicepeople.” The country, he says, “is richand pretty,” and the people “strong, active and clever.”

The Admiral spoke with muchpleasure in the alliance with GreatBritain and the United States. Heregards the entrance of Russian warships into the port of Newchang,Manchuria, as merely a manoeuvre.

”You see,” he said, “it is verydifficult to command the Russianfleet in the Far East from St. Peters-burg. As the British cannot do muchout there, Japanese will be veryhandy.”

Referring to the alliance, he said,“If there be some bad monster whogoes against us to give trouble to thepeace of the world or to injure theprosperity and happiness of the twonations, we will go hand in hand tothe battlefield.”

The Admiral believes the alliancewill last for ever, and that England andJapan will hold the peace of the worldin their hands.

He said that so far he has enjoyedthe Australian tour exceedingly, andis profuse in expressing gratitude forthe kindness received.

Arriving in Melbourne, the familiarand welcome Red Chrysanthemum(or sun in splendour) is once moreflying in Hobson’s Bay.

Meanwhile leading Chineseresidents in Sydney have written tothe consul-general for Japan, askingpermission to tender the officers andseamen of the squadron a banquetas an expression of good will.(Compiled from reports in The Age,May-June, 1903.)

Chinese cheap labour threatto Australian workers

In Melbourne a deputation fromthe furniture and laundry sectors metthe Victorian Chief Secretaryyesterday to complain about Chinesecompetition on their trade.

They claimed that Europeanswere being crowded out by Chineseworkers, and asked that no Chineseshould be allowed to work in the

furniture trade without a licence. Thenumber of Chinese factories shouldalso be restricted to 20.

The Chief Secretary argued thatdisplaced Chinese workers mightdrift into other trades, and would onlyshift the evil. But he said Cabinetwould look into it.(Edited from The Age, June 4, 1903.)

White Australia policyattacked in pamphlets

This is the Rats’ Push destroying Cole’s Book Arcade, because it contains publications likely to support the strikers.

The opponents of the “WhiteAustralia” policy are few, but theyhave a champion in Mr. E.W. Cole,of the Melbourne Book Arcade.

Mr. Cole has issued the fourth ofhis pamphlets upon the subject, andhas published the fourth edition of thefirst one.

These pamphlets are titled, AWhite Australia Impossible; TheCause of Color in Mankind; TheWhole Human Race is Mixing; andThe Negro.

The argument of the first pamphletis that a “White Australia” isimpossible because of the progress, growing power and increasingpopulation of Japan, and because ofthe fact that China, Java and India areoverflowing with people.

Much of this overflow, Mr. Colethinks, must naturally trend towardsAustralia, and he would invite theAsiatics to come as friends ratherthan repel them as enemies orundesirables.

His view is that, owing to thelargeness of the continent and thesmallness of the white population, itwill be impossible for any length oftime to keep the Asiatics out.

Mr. Cole, in his second pamphlet, states authorities for his assertion thatman the world over is the same, andthat color is only climatic.

In pamphlet No. 3 he goes on toshow that the races are mixing, andmust continue to mix, and that “everyperson is cousin to every otherperson.”

In the fourth pamphlet hisendeavor is to show that with the aidof the evolutionary forces ofcivilisation, notably education, thenegro race, so long down-trodden,may be raised to a high standard.

His main argument is based onhumanitarian principles. NoChristian, he declares, can supportthe “White Australia” law, for that lawwould have kept Christ, an Asiatic anda colored man, out of Australia.

Apart from the argument, which iscourageously put forward inopposition to public opinion, thepamphlets contain much ethnologicalinformation of the most interestingcharacter.(Edited from The Age, June 20,1903.)

Rain makerclaims tobreak drought

Dr McCarthy, of Exhibition Steet,Melbourne, claims to have inventeda method to produce rain within 32hours, by sending up continuouslyfrom three centres a column of gasmade from certain chemicals.

The method will create rain overa range of 90 miles at any altitude.

“I do not need to wait until the windis from a rainy quarter,” said Dr.McCarthy.

“In one experiment the barometricconditions were quite unfavorable, yetI produced the rain. Though I cannot,of course, give away my secret, I maytell you that the chemicals used haveto be charged in accordance with thealtitudes.”

Experiments have already beencarried out successfully on an estatenear Inglewood. One inch of tropicalrain fell there after the heavens hadbeen bombarded by the secretgaseous batteries for 15 hours.

A syndicate has been formed toexploit Dr. McCarthy’s invention, andit has been announced that he willvisit other parts of Victoria if theowners of farming properties areprepared to guarantee a given sumshould rain consequently fall.

At Broken Hill, in New SouthWales, the local Chamber ofCommerce yesterday announced thatit has contacted Dr McCarthy’s rain-making syndicate on hearing abouthis successful experiments.

The secretary of the syndicate hassent the Chamber of Commerce amessage that the doctor is preparedto travel to Broken Hill if a substantialamount is guaranteed.

Angry fansattackfooty umpire

During a football match at EastBrunswick on Saturday afternoonbetween the East Brunswick and theRainbow teams, who were competingfor the North Suburban Thirdspremiership, the umpire was forcedto leave the field, followed by a mobof infuriated barrackers.

It appears that E. C. Lacey, thefield umpire, angered East Brunswicksupporters by his decisions. But whenhe tried to calm the situation byawarding free kicks, it furtherexasperated the players and theirsupporters.

The result was that he had to beata retreat from the field, chased by themob, and was compelled to takerefuge in a house in Victoria Street.

Umpire Lacey tendered hisresignation in a letter received lastnight at a meeting of the NorthSuburban Football Association, heldat the Rising Sun Hotel.

After reading the umpire’s report, and finding that both clubs refused toplay the match over again, the contestwas declared a draw.

Two East Brunswick players,Mitchell and Powditch, weredisqualified for life for striking theumpire. D. Waugh of the same teamwas disqualified until 16th July forplaying with steel spikes in his shoes.

The resignation of the umpire wasaccepted with regret.(Compiled from reports in The Age,June 2 and June 5, 1903.)
