CURRICULUMFOCUSMATHEMATICS We have been using lots of manipulatives to grasp the concept of

subtractionWe even had our own bear caves for our mini bears to hibernate inside. It really helped us to visualize subtraction in action!

We should know the math vocabulary MINUS and SUBTRACTION now.We are can use a number line to hop backwards and find the answer for a subtraction problem. We had fun doing this outside using our own bodies to hop along our chalk drawn number lines

and solve addition and subtraction problems. We can now write our own subtraction number sentence.

TOPIC / SCIENCE We learned a lot about Polar Bears and are just finishing off our Popletts on the iPads showing some of our research.

The experiment we did to prove that blubber helped to keep the Polar Bears warm in the icy water was a fun experience.

We have just started our new study on The Water

We’ll be creating co-operative group posters about the Water Cycle. We will use the INDEX in books to find out information that we want to put on our posters. We will dance T H E W A T E R C Y C L E D A N C E .We will do experiments involving freezing and melting, condensation, evaporation and precipitation.We will record what we did as well as our results, and we will use the terminology HYPOTHESIS.

ENGINEERING

We will be using clothes pegs to engineer a bed for Goldilocks. AUTHOR’S SHOWCASEWe are still listening to our teacher read The World of Pooh by A.A. Milne.We will be starting a character study on Pooh Bear soon.

ORAL LANGUAGE We are continuing our role playing of “Television Presenters” as we announce our morning calendar each morning. Check out the Class Gallery Link on our Teacher Page to view some fun videos of us presenting.

PHONICS We have started our focus on consonant blends and have some fun games for this.Parents can help at home by playing games like “I Spy”, where you focus on words with a consonant blend at the beginning. E.g. plants, plane, crane, sky etc. READING AND WRITINGIn reading we continue to focus on fluency, mileage and comprehension. To help us with comprehension we will be introduced to “reading with a purpose.” This is when the teacher gives the question

that needs to be answered, before we have even read the book. Next, we read or listen to the book being read and then answer that question. In our writing time we finished our versions of the book A BEAR CAME OVER TO MY PLACE.

After reading the book CHOCOLATE MOUSSE FOR GREEDY GOOSE by Julia Donaldson, we each wrote and illustrated a page, to create our own rhyming book that we called ANIMALS IN THE KITCHEN. Look out for it to visit your home soon!
