JANUARY 2018A Chamber of Commerce PublicationKillingworth Krier

Reverend Martha Bays came to The Congregational Church in Killingworth, UCC in January of 2009. In January of 2018, Martha will retire to New York to be closer to her grandchildren. While she’s moving from our small to the big city, her life will go at a much slower pace compared to her very active work of The Congregational Church of Killingworth.

As the Board Chair of the Shoreline Soup Kitchen, Martha tirelessly continued to assist and carry out the necessary duties of head-ing that organization as well as working on church mission projects. The church sponsors several children through World Vision and donates to UCC missions, Helping Hands, Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army, Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Food Pantries,

and other worthwhile charities. The church donates food, clothing, and living neces-sities to those in need - locally, nationally, and internationally. In addition, the church prepares a meal for the Eddy House Homeless Shelter as well as takes food and clothing to the Green in New Haven on a monthly basis to be distributed to anyone in need.

Martha will continue her volunteer work and mission efforts at the local soup kitchen in New York. She looks forward to spending more time with her grown children and her three grandchildren. The Congregational Church hosted a farewell service in December and her last worship service was held on December 31st.

We wish Martha all the best in her retirement, she will be missed.

Dear Killingworth friends:

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and were able to slow down a little and enjoy it with family and friends. It always seems to go by too fast. For me, by the end of Decem-ber I get so sick of looking at food, but I’m never strong enough to turn it down! We hope you joined us for our annual tree lighting at Parmelee Farm. A big Thank You to the Lion’s Club for their partnership in putting the event together and for

their continued support of Chamber events over the years. The volunteer crew at the Farm does an incredible job getting everything set up.

With a great 2017 behind us, we look forward to an outstanding 2018. The Chamber has some big plans and decisions to make regarding the future of our Chamber. We will continue our great traditions in 2018 including the Pumpkin Carving, the Concert Series, and Christmas at the Farm. We plan to continue our partnership with other local chambers. Currently our officers and Board of Directors are investigating the possibility of a merger with a neigh-boring chamber. All members will be notified with any progress. Locally we’ll highlight more of the great locations we have in town for our “Business After Hours” events. These Chamber networking events are great opportunities to get exposure for your business. If you are a Chamber member looking to promote your business and host a Business After Hours, please contact the Chamber. More details on our February Business After Hours in the February Krier. In a joint effort with the town, we are also planning a “Real Estate Agent Breakfast” highlighting local properties, more info soon.

A new year means new resolutions. Whether it’s saving for retirement, losing weight, improving your daily habits, building that addition, or anything else you had in mind, please remember to give one of the Chamber members the opportunity to help you with that specific goal. Chamber members who pay dues and also advertise in the Krier are a major reason why the Chamber is still able to produce the Krier that we all enjoy.

I wish you all a Healthy, Happy, Prosperous 2018 and look forward to seeing you around Killingworth.

Profile: Colandrea DesignOwner Janet Colandrea • Email: [email protected]

www.colandreadesign.com

Colandrea Design was found-ed in 2001 when a local country club asked Janet Colandrea to build a website for them. Backed with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and silversmithing and a lifetime of loving art, the country club project snowballed and she has been building websites and providing marketing solutions for local businesses, holistic practitioners and non- profit organiza-tions ever since.

“As a graphic artist and web developer, I provide a full range of creative and technical solutions,” says Janet. “ I develop and host websites, train clients to manage their own website or provide those services if they don’t wish to take on that task. I design graphics and marketing materials ranging from custom logos to business cards, brochures, flyers, ads, posters and any other branding solutions. The technical side kicks in when providing search engine optimi-zation to increase the clients’ visibility on a search engine. I also provide social media development and net-working. I’m a Google trusted profes-sional and can provide 360° imaging to help boost local online visibility to

businesses. Some of the things I really enjoy is filming, editing and creating videos. It creates a dynamic workflow and tells a story. For me, my job is very rewarding, I could be trouble-shooting a down site or building a new site, creating a logo being seen by

thousands of people or building an ad campaign that draws traffic to a business. The results are immeasurable!”

Janet builds and maintains the websites and volunteers for A Place Called Hope, a birds of prey rehabilita-tion center in Killingworth, as well as Meigs Point Nature Center and the Friends of Hammonasset at Ham-monasset Beach State Park.

Janet lives in Killingworth with her husband and son. In her spare time she finds new adventures to share with her family from day trips to hiking, camping, rockhounding, beachcombing and just being outside, enjoying nature. At the end of a day, she unwinds in her studio making sterling silver jewelry out of sea glass or gemstones. Her work can be found at seasideseaglassjewelry.com or colandreadesign.com.

On December 14th, one final event marked the 350th anniversary of Killingworth’s naming: the rededi-cation of a small monument in front of town hall. At Killingworth’s 300th anniversary, the town placed a plaque on an antique milestone “to honor the early settlers and the men and women who contributed to the growth and development of the Town of Killing-worth.” For the 350th anniversary, a new base was added—thanks to Mike Cassella and Premier Stone—with a new plaque honoring the contribu-tion of all Killingworth residents. First Selectwoman Cathy Iino also thanked Town Historian Thomas Lentz; the Evergreen Garden Club, which creat-ed and tends the garden where the stone sits; and, once more, the 350th Anniversary Committee, headed by Lucinda Hogarty and Charlie Smith, for a year of memorable activities and installations.

The Killingworth Health Department has a limited supply of radon test kits for distribution to residents at no charge. The test kits have been provided by the State Health Department and are available on a first come, first served basis. Residents are asked to visit the Killingworth Health Department to obtain a test kit.

All homes should to be tested for radon, ideally during the colder months when doors and windows are kept closed. Instructions will be provided with each test kit.

Some facts about radon- you can’t see it, smell it, or taste it, but it could be present at a dangerous level in your home. Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the decay of naturally occurring radium and uranium in the earth. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in America and claims the lives of about 21,000 Americans each year.

Exposure to radon is a preventable health risk and testing radon levels in your home can help reduce unnec-essary exposure. If a high radon level is detected in your home, you can take steps to fix the problem to protect yourself and your family, typically at a cost ranging from $1,200 - $1,500.

Test kits can also be purchased from the American Lung Association for $15 via their Health House initia-tive at, http://www.healthhouse.org/radon/testkit.cfm, or from a local hardware store. Additional information may be found on the EPA web site, http://www.epa.gov/radon/index.html, or the CT Department of Public Health site, www.ct.gov/dph/radon.

For more information please contact the Killingworth Health Department at (860) 663-1765 x223.

Do you and 11 friends want to pit yourself against major tonnage for a good cause? The American Cancer Society’s Fire Truck Pull at the Relay For Life of HK will take place on Saturday, June 23rd at HKHS. The event is a teambuilding, fundraising, cancer-fighting event where teams of 12 people compete to pull the truck a designated distance in the fastest time. We challenge you and other groups in the area to step up to the rope and show Middle-sex County who can Pull For a Cure with the fastest time.

How does it work? Teams will rally together to raise money however they see fit. The minimum amount of money that a team must raise is $1200 (or $100 per per-son) to participate. All funds raised benefit the mission of

the American Cancer Society to save lives, celebrate lives and lead the fight for a world free from cancer. The win-ning team will receive bragging rights and a trophy!

To learn more, join us on January 31st at 6:30 p.m. at the Haddam Volunteer Firehouse Company 1, 439 Saybrook Rd, Higganum to kick off the 2018 Relay For Life/Fire Truck Pull season! Tuesday Book Discussion“The Underground Railroad” by Colson Whitehead

is the Pulitzer Prize winning novel being discussed at the January 9th meeting of the Killingworth Library Tuesday Book Discussion Group. What we understand as a web of committed souls helping slaves escape to freedom, Whitehead transforms into an actual train transporting fugitives north. Central to the novel is Cora, a teen age slave born on a Georgia plantation. In her journey toward freedom, she has to evade a complex and cruel mix of evil doers out to drag her back or worse. Michiko Kakutani in his New York Times review of August 5, 2016 wrote of the novel, “In recounting Cora’s story, Mr. Whitehead commu-nicates the horrors of slavery and its toxic legacy... even as he memorializes the yearning for freedom that spurs one generation after another to persevere in the search for justice.”

Discussion begins at 1 p.m. in the Killingworth Library meeting room and newcomers are always welcome. Books may be found at the circulation desk.

A shout out to chamber member June Vigliotti of June’s Outback – Together with her pub family and a very generous 5 bike, helmets and scooter donation from the HK Dairy Barn in Higganum, all these toys were delivered to the Marine Toys For Tots program in December!

New and Remodeling

The Haddam-Killingworth Middle School PTO held its 30th Annual Holiday Craft Fair in December. The Middle School Gym and Cafete-ria were transformed into a vibrant marketplace with over 70 booths, featuring artisans and crafters from near and far. Many of our participants have been with us for years and this year we also had several new vendors with a wide selection of hand-crafted items.

The HK High School and Middle School students committed volunteer-ing is the most distinguishing aspect

of our fair and their continued stellar participation this year again earned them kudos from our vendors.

We sincerely thank the many parent volunteers for their time and generous donations to our bake sale and concessions. We also thank the

local area stores and restaurants for their contributions to the fair.

We thank all of you who visited the fair! We hope to see you next year….

Dr. Murphy - I’ve been told to drink more water but it’s truly a struggle for me to get more than two or three glasses in a day. I’ve never been a water drinker. How many glasses is really necessary for the average person and what other ways can we grab hydration besides plain

You are not alone in your struggle. Water is a great source of hydration, but it is not the ONLY source. It is recommended you drink eight- 8oz glasses of fluids a day, preferably water because it has no calories. You may be trying to watch your calorie intake, so it would behoove you to not take in unnecessary calories in the form of fluids, especially since they don’t have other benefits that foods do with added fiber, protein, etc. Water does not contain anything, no electrolytes, no calories, and fortu-nately or not, no taste. Waters’ main purpose is for hydra-tion that our bodies require to keep our systems in order. However, if you have a lot of fluid losses such as sweating on a hot day in the summer and you are exercising, you should replace sodium as well as extra fluid. If you are losing a lot of fluid through your digestive system, say with a virus, and you are having a lot of diarrhea, you would need to replace both sodium and potassium along with extra fluids.

Now that we have that settled, let’s talk about options of fluids. Basically, any fluid will do, except alco-holic beverages. If you have a lot of caffeinated beverages, which can have a diuretic effect to some degree (make you urinate more) and in turn, you don’t get the same hydra-tion. If you struggle with plain water, cut up fruit and put it in a pitcher of water to give it a flavor boost. You will not get as much calorie as drinking the fruit juice itself, but it will give the water the zing you may need. Seltzer or club soda is a good alternative, and they have little to no calo-ries. Drinking juices carry with it calories, but they do offer vitamins. They are loaded with the sugar from the fruit, so the best option is to actually eat the fruit and you will get some fluid, along with fiber and the vitamins the whole fruit has to offer. Milk, soy milk, almond or coconut milk is also a good source of fluids with other nutritional benefits such as proteins and healthy fats.

So, to wrap things up, an average person with no ex-tra fluid losses should have about 64oz of non-caffeinated fluids per day. Which fluids you choose to take in depend on your preferences for taste and calorie content.

We’re

In Memorium – Mary E. PowellMary E. Powell, 62, of Killingworth, formerly of Bran-

ford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday November 14th at CT Hospice in Branford after a heroic battle with cancer.

Born in New Haven on September 25, 1955, she was the daughter of Elizabeth Rayner of Killingworth and the late Harry R. Darling Sr. Mary was a graduate of Daniel Hand H.S. Class of ‘73 and earned her Bachelor’s Degree later in life. She was a longtime employee of Unilever/Chesebrough Ponds of Clinton and more recent, Sound Manufacturing of Old Saybrook, where they took great care of her needs during her illness and treated her like family. Mary was a creative and artistic individual. She loved painting and drawing. Mary was an avid gardener and spent her summers going to the beach and fishing. During winter months she was a homebody and enjoyed

crocheting. Most of all she cherished time with fam-ily, especially her grand-daughters. Mary was a kind, loving and fiercely independent woman, who will be greatly missed.

Besides her mother Elizabeth, she is survived by her son Kevin Powell and his significant other Jess Funaro of Guilford; two granddaughters, Sarah and Jayda Powell; three brothers, Harry Darling Jr (Barbara) of Clinton, Gary Darling (Lorraine) of West Topsham, VT and Larry Darling of Colchester; two step-sisters, Cynthia Darling of FL and Carolyn Turner of SC and many nieces and nephews. Also survived by her former spouse Jim Powell and his children Barbara and Jay Powell of S.C.

A Memorial Service was held at Swan funeral home, burial was private. Y

In Memorium – Jeffrey Lee “Jeffro” CookJeffery Lee Cook (“Jeffro”),

a lifelong resident of Killingworth passed away at home on Decem-ber 4, 2017 at the age of 66. Jeff was born to Winnie and Lee Cook on March 25, 1951. He graduated from the Morgan School in 1969 and promptly enlisted in the United States Navy. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and honorably served his country on the U.S.S. Newport News CA-148. Jeff worked for the Town of Killingworth for 40 years. He was a longtime and proud mem-ber of the Ancient Mariner’s Fife and Drum Corp., the Old Saybrook V.F.W. Post #10153, and the American Legion Post #113, Old Saybrook. Affectionately known as the ‘King of Killingworth’, Jeff had a terrific sense of humor, and could often be found holding court at June’s Outback Pub or the Killingworth Café. Jeff loved music. He

was an accomplished guitarist and had a beautiful singing voice. He is survived by two brothers, Craig Cook, Essex, and John (Jennifer) Cook, Deep River, and a sister, Karen Sypher, West-brook, as well as his Godson with whom he had a very close bond, Paul Fredericksen, Killingworth. He is also survived by three nieces, Tracy, Jodi, and Kelly, and many, many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Linda Grenman, and a nephew, Geoffrey Sypher.

A memorial service was held in December at the Killingworth Congregational Church with a celebration of Jeff’s life at June’s Outback Pub. Memorial contributions can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675. Y

Winter reminders. Here we go again:

Parking ban. Our plowers cannot do their job if vehicles are parked on the street or right next to it. Until April 15, parking on public roads is prohibited by ordinance between 12:00 midnight to 6:00 a.m. When it snows, a full-time parking ban goes into effect,

announced at townofkillingworth.com and in email notifications (sign up on the town website if you haven’t already).

Snow removal. Do not shovel or blow snow onto or across roads. We need shoulders on both sides in order to clear roads of snow, and icy ridges caused by snow pushed onto the road are dangerous to our plows and other drivers.

Snow that is pushed into the base of driveways by town or state plows is the homeowner’s responsibility. You can mitigate the problem by clearing along the shoulder to the left of your driveway, so that the plow not pick up new snow just before it crosses your driveway.

Mailbox policy. If one of our town plows directly damages your mailbox or your mailbox post, the town will replace it. If the snow pushed by the plow damages or dislodges your mailbox, the town is not responsible for replacing it. The U.S. Postal Service recommends that the front edge of a mailbox be 6” to 8” inches back from the curb or the edge of the road.

Emergency readiness. Clear a swath of your driveway wide enough to accept emergency vehicles—at least 10 feet wide—and clear parking areas, walkways, and porches wide enough to accommodate a stretcher. And don’t forget to make sure that your house number is visible from the road. Even brief delays become critical during emergency situations.

Pedestrian safety. If you walk on a road during a snow storm—especially at night—please wear reflective clothing.

Road discontinuations. On January 22, the Board of Selectmen will consider discontinuing several roads or portions of roads:

Tara Drive, a portion of the former Old Deep River Turnpike, currently serves one house.

Ivy Cottage Road, another portion of the former Old Deep River Turnpike, also serves one house.

Chittenden Road, east of Route 81, has not been main-tained by the town in many years, does not show up on published maps, and does not serve as frontage for any houses.

Titus Coan, between the portion coming off of Route 80 and the portion off of Iron Works Road, has been aban-doned for many years but not officially discontinued.

Kelseytown, just north of the Clinton town line, below the last Killingworth driveway onto it. The road is not passable into Clinton.

These roads have been posted and abutters have been notified. The BOS meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall. If the selectmen vote to discontinue a road, the discontinuation will be sent to Town Meeting for approval.

Veterans’ monument. After we dedicated the veter-ans’ monument in front of Town Hall last spring, I learned that some names are missing. We are going to try to add the missing names. If you know of a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict, or the Viet Nam era who was Killingworth resident at the time he or she entered the military, please let me know.

Solarize issues. If you had a solar installation done as part of the Haddam-Killingworth Solarize program and you are having any issues with your equipment, please contact Bill Colonis at Connecticut Green Bank, 860-258-7828 or [email protected]. Since BeFree Solar is no longer operating in Connecticut and is not fulfilling workmanship warranties, CT Green Bank has designated Mr. Colonis as the first point of contact for help in resolving problems.

Town committees. Killingworth government depends on the volunteer efforts of dozens of citizens who serve on boards, commissions, and committees. If you are interest-ed in an appointment to one of these important groups, please let me know. We currently have openings on committees such as the Open Space Committee, which identifies properties within the town that might be preserved as or restored to open space and works with owners and others to find ways to protect them; the Energy Task Force, which promotes energy efficient and sustainable practices, operations, and patterns of development for the Town of Killingworth and its resi-dents; and the Emergency Management Committee, which plans and prepares for town-wide emergencies and leads response efforts.

Many, many thanks to the committee members who currently serve. Don’t forget to come get sworn in again if you have recently been reappointed!

Coffee with the First Selectwoman. Fridays, 8:30 a.m.: Jan. 5, Copper Skillet; Jan. 26, Cozy Corner Bakery. (Sorry to have to skip two Fridays this month because of scheduling conflicts.) If those times are not convenient, please don’t hesitate to contact my office to arrange to get together at another time.
