"Information is endlessly available to us: where shall wisdom be found?" - Harold Bloom In many studies relating to the field of leadership, the concept of reflection is a discussion point. These discussions speak of reflection as focusing on what we do and what we have done, often within the workplace. But reflection is also obviously relevant to prayer – when we are fully present in the moment, present to God; sharing silence and beauty. A depth of understanding grows when we invest in this kind of quality time – both in human relationships and in our relationship with God. Reflection can be difficult to achieve; as we all know that once the busy- ness of the day begins there may be little time in the hustle and bustle to pause. It can be difficult for a leader of a school to take time out, let alone to include her whole staff; to stop and reflect. Just to have that quiet time, those moments without distraction, can have enormous benefits - not the least – for the welfare of staff. In order to ensure we capture a time for reflection, the staff have commenced Tuesdays with prayer and reflection in the Chapel. This week we were led by Leanne, our Principal. Her choice of “The Deer’s Cry”, or the sacred Lorico, was significant, as we considered her words regarding Christ being in the heart of all that we do. It was composed by Saint Patrick in the year 433. Knowing of an ambush to kill him and his followers, St. Patrick led his men chanting it as they passed through a forest. They were transformed into a deer and twenty fawns and thus, St. Patrick and his men were saved. This is a beautiful song and it reflects a common practice in several different spiritual traditions. For instance, both in Christianity and Buddhism, one of the basic practices is the visualization of Christ / Buddha above and below us, on either side, in the front and behind, and in the heart. There is also the “walk in beauty” prayer attributed to the Navajo. Perhaps we all need to remind ourselves that the more the tyranny of the ‘urgent’ demands our time, the more time it will take to stay centred in the ground of our being, to remain connected in our relationship with God. As we move forward in Term 3, we certainly are reminded that we will have God’s strength to pilot us, His eye to look before us and His wisdom to guide us. This week we have witnessed this sense of strength, wisdom and guidance in all of our students and staff who are involved in the production of “The Sound of Music”. We offer them best wishes for each of their performances and thank them for their ongoing commitment to this enormous undertaking. Next Monday they will have a day exploring the city and visiting the main tourist attractions.

There are lots of opportunities available for those students who love to write.

Two that are currently available include the OZ Kids In Print option that is advertised on our Library catalogue Dashboard. Entries are accepted by this publication up to the 5 October and can be in the form of a story or poem.

The second competition is the Scarlet Stiletto Awards; a crime and mys-tery short story competition. For more details on this competition go to https://goo.gl/349uQ6. The competition closes on 31 August.

So why not put your written word out there for the rest of the world to enjoy?

On Wednesday 25th July, nine students from the Year 9 and Year 10 Killester Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) team visited the Monash University Wind Tunnel Facility. The wind tunnel facility is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and is used to test the aerodynamics of cars, trains, buildings and athletes such as cyclists. Each year the facility invites a small number of schools that are competing in the Energy Breakthrough challenge to investigate the aerodynamics of their recumbent tricycles. Killester College was one of only five schools invited to visit the facility this year. The students were able to observe their recumbent tricycle within the wind tunnel and identify areas of turbulent flow. We had the opportunity to discuss design and engineering issues with the mechanical and aeronautical engineers at the facility and learnt some valuable lessons about how to improve the aerodynamics of our tricycles. The students also met with members of the Monash Human Powered Vehicle Team as they prepare for their record speed attempts.

DONNAT ELECTRICAL

Don Colgrave has been providing electrical services for Killester for so long that he is almost considered staff! Indeed, he often joins us for lunch in the staffroom and his smiling face is always welcome.

Don started working at Killester College over 20 years ago as part of the Norm Phillips group. In 2011, he and his wife Natalie established Donnat Electrical and Data Services and he has ensured that the lights of Killester continue to shine brightly year after year.

Donnat Electrical and Data Services stands by its reputation as a quality company and Don and his team have ensured that Killester’s electrical equipment and supply are rigorously maintained, meeting all safety standards, as well as troubleshooting any potential problems. As Killester has grown, so has the relationship with the Donnat team and we have been very lucky to enjoy such a successful and “powerful” partnership.

Don and Natalie Colgrave have consistently been proud supporters of the school and, in previous years, have contributed to the Human Powered Vehicle and this year enthusiastically signed on as our very first Gold Sponsor for “The Sound of Music”. We are so grateful to Donnat Electrical and Data Services and are appreciative of the company’s longstanding contribution to Killester.
