Angels brought out the devilTHEY were called angels but they brought out the devil in many red blooded males.

The angels, four beautiful models with wings, were brought here to promote a certain brand of male grooming products.

If the idea was to grab the hearts and minds of young Kilkennymen in particular then the project was a resounding success.

The quartet of beauties, part of an international campaign to promote deodorant for men, spent about 20 minutes outside the main gate of Kilkenny Castle and they certainly provided an eye catching boost for motorists after a day’s work.

It all reminded of the young worker of yore who when shown a page three beauty in a certain tabloid newspaper uttered the words: Bless her. Thank God she is healthy.

And healthy those beauties certainly were.....

A LOT of people have different opinions about disabled parking spaces and the

regulations that govern their use. Several have asked me to write about the rules and regulations attached to having a disabled parking card, as they feel there is some abuse.

The EU Disabled Parking Card must be displayed on the dash of a car. People displaying the card can park in spaces with the wheelchair symbol painted on the ground. Parking is provided by the Local Authority or Public Bodies. It’s free and unlimited.

The card entitles the holder to park in general parking, at parking meters and in disc parking areas. The laws do not extend to private car parks.

If you park your car in a disabled person’s parking space you are liable to a fine of €80 and you could be clamped or towed away.

A card does not entitle you to park anywhere and you must obey parking regulations.

There are very strict rules from the EU in regard to the use of the card. The disabled person must be present and using the space. If there is abuse or misuse of the card, it will be withdrawn.

Furthermore it is an offence to lend the card or allow any other person to use it without the disabled person being in the car. If a holder of the card is convicted he or she could be fined up to €3,000.

I have found people using the card to their own advantage without the disabled person being present. This is disgraceful abuse. It is depriving another disabled person of a potential parking space.

If you encounter any abuse, report it. The parking card can be used in all member States of the European Union.

Shame on those who are knowingly abusing the disabled parking cards

SUMMER SPROUTING

MOST beans can be sprouted but if you are new to sprouting you should start with mung beans. Dried mung beans are available in most supermarkets or health food stores. You can buy a special sprouter but really all you need is a glass jar with a piece of net secured to the top with an elastic.

Place a layer of beans in the jar and cover with cool water for 12 hours. Drain and leave in an area that is out of direct sunlight but normal room temperature. Rinse your

growing sprouts with cool water twice a day until ready to eat. Sprouts are not only highly

nutritious and rich in enzymes they also taste great. Once harvested keep them

in the fridge and add to salads or stir fries or just snack on them raw.

From hair straightening to sizzling tan solutions

REPORTER WISHLIST THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE THINGS....

LIVING

THE days of piling on layer after layer of fake tan in order to look as bronzed

as possible are over. Pale is the look of the season but unfortunately very few people are blessed with blemish free porcelain skin.

Most of us need a little help before we feel brave enough to bare our arms and legs to the elements. The key is to use just enough fake tan to even out the skin tone and give yourself a natural glow.

Here are some of the best on the market.

Tan OrganicTHIS product needs no introduction. It has become one of the biggest success stories of Dragon’s Den and is top of most people’s list when it comes to organic tanning. The award winning aloe vera based tan is 100% natural, non dehydrating and doubles up as an anti-ageing body treatment at the same time.

Devotees of the product say they love it because it is so easy to apply and doesn’t leave behind the typical fake tan stale biscuit smell.

It is also ideal for people with sensitive skin and is approved by the Irish Eczema Society. This is well worth a try this summer if you hate loading your skin with chemicals or you are allergic to other products on the market. Just make sure you do a test patch somewhere small first.

Available from www.tanorganic.com

St Tropez Wash Off Instant GlowTHIS is the latest addition to the St Tropez range of products. The hydrating body lotion delivers a beautiful instant, natural-looking tan that washes off with soap and water. It’s free from DHA and it is non-transferable so it is a great product if you like to tan and go.

There are a few golden rules when it comes to applying it. To prevent a patchy result make sure you exfoliate first. Also, it’s a good idea to wear latex gloves to avoid staining your hands and to apply the lotion using sweeping strokes.

A nice way to finish off the tan is to apply St Tropez Wash Off Instant Glow Shimmer Stick to the fronts of the legs, shoulders and décolletage to enhance the tan and give a subtle shimmer sheen.

Available from chemists nationwide.

Sun Believable Tan MeSUN Believable Tan Me is a rich and fluffy mousse that glides easily onto the skin to create a healthy, bronzed and lasting tan.

It’s virtually odourless and dries super-fast so you don’t have to sit around for ages before getting dressed. It’s easy to apply as it has an in-built golden glow for an immediate colour. It’s fast acting too and develops within two to four hours hours so you can apply it the morning of a wedding or a few hours before a night out.

Fragrance and alcohol free it also comes with a special application mitt.

See www.sun-believable.com for stockists.

Wow! Brown Ready To GloWOW! Brown Ready To Glo fake tan has been specifically designed with Irish skin in mind. It was developed by self confessed beauty junkies Donna Ledwidge and Frances Brennan, founders of Wow Brown Tanning Boutique in Dublin.

An express tan, its condensed tanning formula dries in a wink. It also comes in a 100ml spray bottle so it is a good option if you are travelling abroad or heading away for a weekend.

When you’re ‘Ready To Glo’ just spray onto a mitt and apply all over your body in circular movements, on

your neck and shoulders as a quick fix, or as a stand-in for tights. Easy!

Available from www.wowbrown.com

Vani-T Liquid SunA FAVORITE of leading celebrities, this innovative formula gives you glistening glamour in an easy to use mist. It gives a sun kissed glow from head to toe and fades slowly and evenly.

Because it’s a mist you can apply as little or as much as you like so you can choose between a subtle glow or a rich, deep, exotic looking cocoa dipped tan. Rich in anti-oxidants, vitamins and botanical extracts, the formula also enriches your skin as it tans.

As a bonus it is made from natural and organic ingredients, contains no petro-chemicals, mineral oils, parabens or artificial preservatives.

Available from www.organicsupermarket.ie

he-shiAWARD winning he-shi ‘Day to Day Gradual Tan’ is a three-in-one self tanner, tan extender and moisturiser. This triple action lotion evens out skin tones, to gradually build a light bronzed complexion.

It can also be used to maintain an existing self tan or to top up your colour between self tan applications.

Simply massage into dry, clean skin on a daily basis to keep your skin bronzed, smooth and soft. Apply liberally with hands to cover your face and body. Ensure even application and wash hands immediately after use.

Gradual tans offer a great way to take the sting out of white skin without committing to a full-on tropical tan.

Available from www.millies.ie

Rockstar Tan EntourageTHIS product has become a staple among the self-tanning pack and once you try it you will understand why.

It’s a daily moisturiser that firms protects and nourishes while gradually building a golden glow. It smells divine without a hint of the DHA that lies within.

It slowly builds your colourr or maintains an existing tan, while jojoba oil, cocoa butter, hemp seed and

bio-essential complex keep it soft and supple. Caffeine, copper and Firmaderm also help fight anti-aging and keep skin firm.

Available from www.rockstartan.ie

Xen Tan Scent SecureFinally, if the fake tan smell is too much to bare then this revolutionary new product from Xen Tan is for you.

Scent Secure is a breakthrough product in tanning technology locks out the unpleasant odours associated with fake tan products. It contains a special molecule which surrounds the active tanning ingredient DHA that causes the traditional ‘fake tan smell’.

Enriched with powerful ingredients and a firming complex it also leaves skin feeling wonderfully nourished, lifted and firm.

Iit can be used both before and after self-tan application.

DUBLIN based band, ‘I Draw Slow’ released their new album ‘Redhills’ this month. The five-piece outfit comprises vocals, guitar, fiddle, banjo and double bass. Holden siblings Dave (guitar) and Louise (vocals) have been writing together for two decades. In 2008 the pair teamed up with violinist Adrian Hart, claw hammer banjo player Colin Derham and double bassist Konrad Liddy to form ‘I Draw Slow’.

The group’s sound is rooted in

old time style of the Appalachian Mountains, drawing on Irish traditional music and modern Americana. These are dark tales of debauchery and trouble swinging from the kind of well-crafted melodies that survive.

‘I Draw Slow’ play their first Kilkenny gig at Billy Byrnes Bar, 79 John Street on Saturday, May 14. Support is from Tom Kirwan. Doors: 8pm Admission is free! Visit www.idrawslow.com for more information.

FILM HANNADirector Joe Wright

EVERY so often a director makes a leap of imagination so daring compared to what he has done before that it amazes even himself. Joe Wright, famous for well regarded literary adaptations like ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and ‘Atonement’, has done this with the finest thriller in years - ‘Hanna’.

Starring our very own Saoirse Ronan as the eponymous character we see her in the opening scene slaying a reindeer in an Arctic tundra. She is living here with her father cut off from civilisation so he can train her in secret for her mission - to kill Cate Blanchet’s evil CIA operative. She will soon have to escape an army base and cross several borders while being chased by a sadistic hermaphrodite and his skinhead thugs.

The film moves across several international locations from Morrocco, Spain and finally Berlin. The audience genuinely never know what is going to happen next. She befriends a family of tourists and she realises what her life has been lacking. When she has to fight again this places even more jeopardy in the situation since she has dragged these well meaning innocents into the sights of her enemies.

Saoirse Ronan brought this script to Joe Wright and she must have seen parallels between her own strange life now in the spotlight and Hanna’s hounded existence. She channels these emotions brilliantly and is utterly convincing in every frame with her striking gaze and subtle delivery of lines. She is no slouch either in the martial arts stakes and the breathtaking stunt work and fights are more exhilarating when you consider her age.

One of the smartest choices he made was to surround her with generous actors who allow her the space to create this fantastic

character. Both Eric Bana as her father and Cate Blanchett as the villain have to stretch themselves to keep up with this prodigious talent but also allow her those moments to shine.

The only bum note in the proceedings for me were the well meaning family who seemed a little cliched and their dialogue a bit obvious.

This was easily compensated by the surrealism of the direction

which recalled David Lynch as much as the Bourne trilogy. Eschewing the handheld look of modern action movies each beautifully composed shot was filled with odd details.

Snowscapes and deserts never looked so strange while the strip-bars and fairgrounds of Berlin were made into fairyland worlds. This was complimented by the woozy yet pounding score by The Chemical Brother who have

created the most original film music in a decade.

Joe Wright has finally announced himself  as an important director who like other British film makers recently is capable of that rarest of things - a critically acclaimed blockbuster. He has a fine ally in Saoirse Ronan who has proved herself as the finest performer – either male or female to ever emerge from this country.

Indeed there is no-one in the

acting profession on the planet at the moment who comes near this supernaturally talented girl for looks, intensity or technique. This movie is an exciting treat for anyone who wants a rollercoaster ride that will make you feel for its protagonists. You will also want to go see it again straight away or at the very least buy the cool soundtrack.

TWO WHEELS GOOD

Greater than the sum of its parts: Successful cycling in a group

The goal for the beginners spin is for participants to

become able to complete the Tour de Kilkenny 109km event on the August Bank Holiday weekend, and even to complete the Sean Kelly 160km event at the end of August. Don’t worry if this seems daunting - with the correct training, everyone can become capable of achieving these targets.

You will be encouraged to gradually build up to your target, while getting some fresh air on your own during the week.

The club cycles in what is known as a chain-gang. You’ll cycle two abreast (it is illegal to be more than this), with everyone taking

turns at the front, which will be explained to you.

When the road narrows or traffic increases, this changes to single file. Being in group formation means group cycling etiquette needs to be observed, which means mastering skills like looking behind, braking, hand signals and changing gears.

It is also important to make sure your bicycle is in proper working order, with tyres, brakes and gears all in good working order. To

be sure that your bike is working properly, the club encourages you to get it serviced by a mechanic.

In order to be self-sufficient when you get

on your bike, you’re also advised to

bring these key pieces of equipment: a multi-tool, tyre levers, a mini-pump and spare

tubes. These are all available

in any good bicycle shop.

Also make sure to bring enough food and liquid with you: bananas, nutri grain bars and water are good options.
